FBI gave Cheryl Mills Immunity in E-mail Investigation

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, who has been looking into the FBI’s investigation of Clinton, said federal investigators were given access to Mills’ computer but only condition that the FBI’s findings could not used against her, the AP reports.

“No wonder they couldn’t prosecute a case. They were handing out immunity deals like candy,” Chaffetz said.

Chaffetz says the two others granted immunity were John Bentel, then-director of the State Department's Office of Information Resources Management, and Clinton aide Heather Samuelson. Two other people were previously identified as receiving immunity deals.

and we'll find out they gave Hillary immunity. Sounds like everyone was given immunity. This is sounding worse and worse for Comey and the FBI. Makes you wonder who was really their targets? Russians or squirrels?

quotes a "Democratic staffer':

The immunity agreements given to Mills and Samuelson covered the evidence recovered from their computers, a Democratic staffer told the Washington Examiner. The deals did not extend to their testimony before Congress or to the information they told the FBI, the staffer said.

They gave immunity to Samuelson for what was on her computer? I thought her computer got lost in the mail.

Folks this is exactly what corruption looks like. Mr. Obama need not worry about his legacy. The Clinton email deals sealed it for him being remembered for having once of the most corrupt administrations ever, and for being the war/drone President, and for prosecuting lower lever employees under the Espionage Act for far less than Madame Clinton's doings.

Obama, your legacy is shit and for being tied to the hip to Madame Clinton.

next Wednesday. Chaffetz and Gowdy are on that committee and I bet they'll have a number of very explicit questions to ask Comey.

This is what I would ask in regards to Cheryl Mills:

Was she truthful when she deposed to the FBI that she didn't know about the server while she was at State?

This is tricky for Comey because essentially it's a no-win. I'll explain:

IMO, She wasn't being truthful because she is on some emails explicitly discussing the server which were revealed to Judicial Watch as a result of FOIA. BUT, the FBI had all the emails so they should have had these as well. In one from 2010, Mills explicitly asks Justin Cooper if HRC's server is down. To me, this proves that: she knew Hillary had a private server and she knew to email the Clinton aide in the Clinton home who serviced that server - ergo she knew the whole ball of wax. (See: Clinton Aides Said They Didn't Know about the Server)

If Comey says Mills was truthful, he is either completely out of the loop and not keeping up with even the general public and the intertubes or even more horribly, he is dissembling himself.

If he says she was not truthful, which appears to be the case, then it begs the question - why would the FBI put up with someone who it knows is not being truthful to them and then even give them additional grants of immunity? It boggles the mind.

Wonder if this sort of thing is why Gitmo was never closed and if Comey's dissembling because afraid of his family being disassembled...

Chaffetz is pissed:

"This is beyond explanation. The FBI was handing out immunity agreements like candy,” Chaffetz said in a statement. “I've lost confidence in this investigation and I question the genuine effort in which it was carried out. Immunity deals should not be a requirement for cooperating with the FBI."

But Brian Fallon is counterspinning:

"Three days before debate, House GOP selectively leaks details from inquiry that was closed months ago w/no charges," spokesman Brian Fallon tweeted.

Who knew the FBI was so accommodating about immunity? Good to know!

Someone needs to ask the 64K question to Comey straight up - did they also give immunity to Hillary?

So far they've given it to:

the guy who set up and maintained the server who could have spoken to motivation if they asked,

The inside guy who seemed to know about the arrangement in State and told others never to discuss it

The tech guy who wanted to alter the emails and/or destroy them upon someone's instruction

The person who fulfilled the search for relevant emails

The person who was both a major participant and lawyer(!) to the head cheese who ordered the whole set-up in the first place.

Did they miss anyone?

I think the sketchiest part of the whole thing is how they allowed Mills to wear multiple hats AND participate in the Clinton deposition.

Clinton has managed to place a cloud over herself, the State Department and the FBI and the Justice Department. Soon President Obama won't have a legacy to worry about.

Her campaign's comment is asinine, since this information was revealed 3 days before the debate because that is the date that it became known. Comey could have told everyone in his open kimono session if he felt like it.

The Clintons are so much better than they were in the 90s. Back then, it took them the better part of a decade to sully the Congress, Supreme Court and every nook and cranny of the Democratic Party. Now they're going to do it all again before they're even in office.

Dear Beloved Flying Spaghetti Monster:
PLEASE arrange for Her Hideous Heiniousness to have one of those famous head shaking "not seizures" during the most important part of this upcoming debate. Thank you.

Considering what this has been like since (before) Hill's nomination coronation run began, they're probably just saying this will have no breaks and will tape and edit to be able to safely say - see, no coughing, freezing or fits for the whole (how many hours?) debate - she's fine! And she can open jars/small-donors wallets/off-shore accounts with those fine, strong fingers she shakes around, too!

if the debates will actually be live or with a slight tape delay? I'm betting on at least a 10 minute delay or more so they can switch Hillary's if something happens. Without a tape delay, they would have to let the public see her being dragged off stage before reappearing 5 minutes later, 20 pounds lighter, explaining that she was just dehydrated but is fine now!

Washington Times (grain of salt required) headline today: "State Department Reveals FBI Uncovered 2,800 Emails Clinton Never Turned Over."

The State Department said Friday it likely has more than 2,800 new emails former Secretary Hillary Clinton never turned over but were recovered by the FBI, and will begin releasing them in batches beginning next month.

Indeed, at most the department will produce only 10 percent of the new documents before the election.

“The State Department is being obstructionist,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, whose organization has sued to get a look at Mrs. Clinton’s messages.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

suggests this is a can-kicking action to delay past the election. Or a variation on the classic bureaucratic ploy of creating a committee to study the subject, a Capitol Hill favorite. The committee deliberates forEVUH, eventually issues findings and maybe even recommendations, which also have to be studied. And nothing happens. Fanfare when it's all announced, silence afterward. This is an alternate form of "dying in committee."

I ardently hope I'm wrong. But it seems unwise to keep waiting for the FBI to be the last-minute save. They're not the marines, and it's not Hollywood.

Yet -- maybe the process itself is the last-minute save.

Maybe enough people will be adequately outraged by news of things like all of these immunity deals to NOT vote for Her Majesty.

I was wondering where you were--since this topic is your bailiwick. I've been wanting to update since about 10 minutes after I first posted, but things kept unfolding. Yes, there are now a total of 5 immunities. Also, it should be "limited" immunity in the title, since that distinction also emerged after I posted.

I think you should go ahead and write something new. So much has come out that that makes sense.

Politico has good new article here: http://www.politico.com/story/2016/09/cheryl-mills-immunity-deal-reactio... Feel free to put it in your essay.

I've been tied up more than usual the past couple weeks, and it seems folks were saving up for Friday to release an extra special load today.

There are at least a couple things I don't see up here which I may throw up, so please feel free to embellish your piece. The other related POLITICO piece is http://www.politico.com/story/2016/09/cheryl-mills-immunity-deal-reactio... Quite fascinating stuff, lots of little bits of information. In yet another piece, I saw a strong suggestion that Combetta's buddy also has a deal, but he's not listed in these two pieces (the FBI release a couple weeks ago appeared to have two names redacted from PRN, so I suspected as much).

I may actually write up the Oversight Committee hearing to hold Pagliano in contempt - pretty interesting. And I haven't yet gone through JW's stuff from their show today. There's lots and lots of stuff...

right? Isn't that what Comey said?

Outside of fiction, immunity in order to get testimony doesn't always work well. Via C-Span, I watched Monica Goodling testify, after she got immunity. She was not very forthcoming. Immunity or not, I think there is always the impetus among these types to protect oneself and one's reputation as much as possible, and also to protect the people with whom one worked. There is, after all, life after the hearing.
