Because "Bernie Bros" Worked So Well
This essay will offer no earth shattering insights, simply a wry shake of the head at how invincibly stupid, smug, and elitist the Clinton campaign is. The field is tightening and at this exact moment, HRC decides to repeat the strategy that made numbers of Bernie Sanders supporters recoil permanently from her candidacy; instead of disparaging and disagreeing with the opponant and his stances, she makes personal attacks against the character of his supporters. That'll win them over, right?
I'd love to know who within her inner circle thought and continues to think that stigmatizing supporters of another candidate, is the way to increase her own numbers. Sanders supporters were painted as liberal, white male elitists who also, by the way, were racists and sexists who didn't care about Black Lives Matters and were trying to keep Hillary off the diner placemats as the first female POTUS.
Now, Hillary Clinton shifts her focus and declares half of Trump supporters are "deplorable" and irredeemable racist, sexist, bigoted xenophobes. I understand why she and her campaign would emphasize that conclusion, since what is left unsaid is harder to digest - the other half of his electorate finds Hillary Clinton so unpalatable that a Donald Trump is seen as a viable alternative. How bad a candidate does one have to be for that to occur? I think any other Democrat not bogged under and crushed by Clinton baggage would be winning in a runaway.
IMO Donald Trump is a symptom of American nihilism and disgust with our current system and the status quo. He is both the triumph and disgrace of real American Democracy. As the Republican Party heads keep explaining - "he won fair and square" and got the most votes. The view of the average American voter about their system and their politicians has fallen so far that many of them honestly believe that almost anyone plucked from without the system will do a better job. I can't understand the astonishment of the establishment when we have the examples of Arnold Schwartzenegger and Jesse Ventura who were elected as the top executives in two very different states based entirely on a celebrity factor and as exemplars of deviation from business as usual. Donald Trump also represents a rejection of the political correctness in place for decades where real bigotry and xenophobia were thankfully suppressed, at least publicly, by polite society. The most malevolent aspect of Trump is his opening a Pandora's box and giving some percentage of the populace permission to hate openly and non-apologetically.
I personally hold the Democrats responsible for the rise of Trump. The Democrats rejected the machinery of real democracy from the getgo of their primary race. The elites within the Party played cajoling supplicants writing letters in support of a Clinton candidacy (it's her turn!), the super delegates were all lined up to declare victory before the first ballot was cast, and the field was cleared for the pre-determined outcome. In effect, the Democratic Party ran the most undemocratic primary in my lifetime, and basically told their voters that showing up at the polls was a mere formality, they got this. And yet, because one guy bucked the coronation, rank and file Democrats got to at least pretend that their votes mattered, although the anointment preceded as scheduled.
So here we are. Two herds of lemmings racing towards facing cliffs. One herd is "I'm Not Him" and the other herd is "I'm Not Her". Whoever wins the election will face the most schismed population ever and will be the subject and object of conflict, debates, hearings, and press coverage the likes of which we have never seen. What a world. There will be a loser and a winner among the two candidates. The American public is the loser in both scenarios.

"Irredeemable"
is actually a scarier word that deplorable.
It sounds very Inquisitorial, as if there are certain people who cannot be 'saved', and therefore deserve official scorn, derision, and perhaps even punishment.
The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
And how's that going to go over with these voters?
From Bill Moyers:
What Workers Aren't Hearing From Democrats
These are those "hard-working" (did I mention white) blue-collar workers Hillary has always panted after. I'm sure they love being called deplorable and irredeemable. It's the stupidity of her comments I'm amazed at.
The Clinton campaign mistakenly believes that they can successfully stigmatize an opponents voters as being a group that people will be embarrassed to join. It didn't work against Sanders, it backfired bigtime and the same thing will happen with Trump. It won't make his supporters like him less, it will make them dislike her more. It is un-politic. For someone so supposedly smart, it's just dumb.

It's probably not a good choice to insult a lot of the people these women know, and perhaps themselves, even if by vague imputation. "I was thinking about Hillary, but she just insulted me and mine, so I guess I'll go with Trump after all, just like my husband."
Reminds me of a response I made to a Clintonite Over There before I left:

They ran the only candidate who could lose to Trump
Clinton fatigue was real in 2008 and it's real in 2016. She and Bill are not the revered figures that Dem Party orthodoxy would have you believe.
The great revelation of this campaign is that the Democratic Party with its DLC, New Democrats, Third Way, etc. elites have been playing liberals, African Americans, labor, civil rights and voting rights and consumer rights advocates, and environmentalists for fools for decades. The curtain has been pulled aside on them. As one of their "marks" I loathe them as much if not more than Republicans.

Too many of those "liberals,
Too many of those "liberals, African Americans, labor, civil rights and voting rights and consumer rights advocates, and environmentalists" immediately pulled the curtain closed and consciously or unconsciously decided they were going to forget what they saw.
Not that many, really.
It's more the case, as in my case, that we believed the minority wing of the party was somehow "in charge," and moving the party rightward. We believed that if we ousted those conservadems the party wold right the ship. Little did we know that those conservadems Were the party.

Totally agree with all you've said, but would add: 'And even if you don't, we're cheating Me in, anyway!' to that last thought.

Much ado about nothing
Peeling off a vote from Clinton and one from Trump and then splitting them between two to three independent parties isn't going to help all that much since a plurality is all either of the two legacy-party candidates needs to capture a states electoral votes.
We have to start somewhere
I am open to constructive ideas. I am not open to the Clintonesque "No, we can't".
Except for the fact that it totally defangs
the threat that the duopoly has been using to keep voters in line: OMG, you must vote for (Dem/Rep) because the opposition is SO TERRIBLE and you don't want to be responsible for THEM getting in, do you?

High school educated middle aged workers of whatever
ethnic background have had a neoliberal bullseye painted on them for 3 decades. Many see their lives as being ruined when their plant closes (57,000 so far) and they lose their livelihoods. From what Americans have been taught since childhood, their lives are ruined - the "American Dream" unfulfilled.
Stats show that once you are unemployed for 6 months, you are close to being unemployable be you Euro, African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian American, Male, Female, etc.
Many internalize the loss of status and income by thinking, somehow, it's their fault. I think this answers the question as to why the unexpected jump in the death rate among Euro males of middle age. Others blame outsiders or something as vague.
When people are hurting, they tend not to be rational.
"The justness of individual land right is not justifiable to those to whom the land by right of first claim collectively belonged"
Excellent point, well made.
How many times do these folks have to hear some Democrat talk about "re-training" newly unemployed work forces for non-existent jobs? Then people who are trying to retrain in tech fields or medicine are undone by hb-1 visas where companies don't want American workers, but prefer to bring in workers from other countries who will work for far less. The unemployed worker is now still unemployed and has used their savings or gone into debt for "re-training" and is worse off than they were before!
These workers are thinking, how can it get worse? And they probably do have a very vested interest in clamping down on hb-1 visas which could be seen a "anti-immigrant" but is more based on protectionism towards American jobs not bigotry.
If Democrats had a clue, they would take on this issue in a way that makes sense and not just the same pablum they usually spew.
One other thing - all politicians continually blather on about how they'll support "small business" which is "the jobs engine of the economy". Small business owners are not getting anything like the tax subsidies and incentives that large rich corporations get at every turn. And access to funds, loans? Forget about it. You need to personally guarantee anything you get in addition to liens on the corporate assets, something that is not asked of the big wheeler dealers like Trump. Crowd funding is probably the best thing that ever happened to small business and that happened outside of the suits on Main Street and Wall Street.

No silver bullet
And even if there is a job out there after the retraining, it's going to take a many years to achieve the journeyman or senior status that will bring salary and status comparable to what they had before. Retraining is very far from being a the panacea.
Thank you. Retraining for a nonexistent job is a cruel joke.
There are many people who have had to train hb-1 visa people who then go back home, help establish the business, and the company, which was in the USA, leaves for the foreign country.
It was not bigotry, in my view, for the people in northern England - the UK's rust belt - to vote for Brexit. Most of the immigrants who came for jobs were Poles and Portuguese. Poles got 1/3 of English wages in Poland and the Portuguese got approximately 1/2 of the pay in Portugal. I think it's more self preservation than bigotry.
The visa program works as protection for favored professionals: Doctors in the USA make approx twice the pay that doctors in Europe get. The USA forces European MD's to go through a lengthy internship program which discourages immigration. I think a German doctor(say) is as qualified as an American doctor and this impediment is only in place because the AMA had the clout to insert this protectionist legislation into Congress and get it passed into law.

My niece,
a staunch republican, in Florida and a tepid Trump supporter is fired up. I really believe she was going to sit this one out because Trump got way too crazy for her.
