Stein--Updated Ballot Map, New Polling

Finally, after a few days of quiet, some new data about Jill Stein and the Green Party!

A new Marquette University Law poll in Wisconsin shows Stein polling at 7% in that state. Go Wisconsin!

Also, below is a completely up to date ballot access map for Jill Stein (as of today). Dark green she is on the ballot (38 states plus DC), orange are states (3) where she is an official write-in candidate.

North Dakota is new--that means it should be light green instead of yellow on the map.

Virginia is already confirmed and on the ballot. This happened yesterday.

the Virginia Green Party site, her signatures were accepted yesterday! And her own site's map shows Virginia deep green!

She probably has a lot on her mind . . . can't fault her too much! Wink

She had to get 8,000 signatures. The population is only around 750,000.

By contrast, Alabama required 5000 signatures, and its population is almost 5 million.

I was writing up a letter to the editor this morning, and as part of the argument I checked what states she has reportable contributions from. It turns out the only missing state is South Dakota. In other words, she has wide appeal.

Here is my letter:

This is a watershed year in American politics, and as we struggle with our changing national identity, we need to open the presidential debates to more viewpoints. These voices need national coverage, but in order to get that coverage, they need to meet an impossible bar of pre-existing popularity. To solve this chicken and egg problem we need to replace the 15% rule with a notion of national prominence.

One such criteria is ballot access: Candidates who have their name on most of the ballots have demonstrated both appeal and organisation at the national level. Gary Johnson is projected to be on all 51 "state" ballots and Jill Stein is projected to be named on 46 state ballots for 480 electoral college votes. Both should qualify. By contrast, the Darryll Castle is currently on 21 ballots worth 204 electoral votes and should not.

Fundraising ability is another test. Johnson and Stein have been raising individual contributions for months, and from every state. Castle has no listed individual contributors.

Johnson and Stein represent right and left versions of the American libertarian tradition. They have both demonstrated national debate relevance using multiple criteria. Including them would provide voters with the full richness of the country's political spectrum, which is our birthright.

Even if she's missing Nevada, South Dakota, and Oklahoma (which is the 4th state?), those only make up 16 electoral votes out of 538 total.

She'll likely be above 500 (unless you're not counting the write-in states).

1. If the Green Party gets 5% of the presidential vote, THEN and only then can their candidates compete as Green Party members for local office. Is that right?

2. Where do you go to find state polling besides google search?

The reason that the duopoly parties don't have to go through all this filing BS every 4 years is because they get 5% easily. Getting 5% means that in 4 years they can hit the ground running.

No idea about state polling. Washington has all mail in.

As Hawkfish says, local Greens can get on the ballot, but they need to collect signatures first. If Stein gets 5% or more nationally, most states will just include the Green Party on the ballot automatically, I think. That would make it easier for local candidates.

Regarding the Wisconsin 7% results, that's including all registered voters. With "likely" voters, Stein's percentage drops to 4%.

As to where I find the polling results--two ways.

1st--pay attention to the Reddit Jill Stein subreddit diaries. Any new polling usually comes up here, especially if it's good polling:

The second is "Google" it (or, in my case "Duckduckgo" it). I type in "Stein--Name of State--Poll" into the search bar and one of the first results is always RealClearPolitics.com that has a list of recent polls from each state, such as here for Wisconsin:

It's useful because you can see any progress over time. In this case, in June in Wisconsin, Stein was polling at 2% of likely voters. Now it's 4%. If you click on the Marquette poll, you can read that she's at 7% for all registered voters. Either way, it seems like she's doubled her polling numbers in the state in two months.

Probably includes "have you voted in the previous presidential election". First time voters fail that, and we have a lot of first time voters this year. Let's hope that they defy the odds & vote.

In Kansas, for example, to be recognized as a party, signatures collected must exceed 2% of the vote in the last gubernatorial election, but 5000 signatures gets you on the presidential ballot. So Jill Stein is on the ballot as an independent in KS. In Missouri 2% of voters on a state wide election guarantees ballot access in the next election with no signature requirement.

Bernie did not make his intelligent and nuanced position on genetic engineering a part of his campaign. Bernie's position is that genetic engineering technology might have useful applications but people have a right to know what is in the food they eat. I would add to that (my own opinion) that this emerging technology needs to be regulated for the public good, just as is nuclear technology. Clinton, in contrast, is the biotech baby, funded by Monsanto.
