Good Morning, 99%'ers!
Sometimes an entry starts off as on one subject and somehow veers in a decidedly different direction. Such is today's Open Thread subject matter. Often I will be looking up a definition or a spelling or information on something that piqued my curiosity and then along the way, get diverted into something else. It is either curiosity or a lack of attention. Whatever the cause, it can lead to interesting things to learn.
Here is beautiful western North Carolina, we are entering leaf peeper season. It is the time of year when all the Floridiots (and others from the far south and flat lands) descend en masse upon the Appalachians. For some reason, the Floridiots seem to be in the majority during leaf peeping season.
The urban dictionary (linked above) provides a number of definitions of just what is a Floridiot, but this one directly below is the broadest of the many definitions and sadly it fits far too often. And I guess I should know since I am from Florida and still live there part time.
Floridiot: derogatory term used to describe people from Florida
"Go back to Florida you fucking floridiot!"
by blueridgenative September 28, 2006
While not quite accurate, I even found this song that describes Floridiots.
So what is it that makes people from Florida called "Floridiots?" Around these parts, there are a number of things about people from Florida that rub the natives the wrong way. Number one, based upon my observations and own experience, is how Floridiots drive. I most often see it in the grocery store parking lot, but it shows up nearly every where.
People around here are generally very friendly and courteous. Most are not particularly in a rush. I see that courtesy nearly every time I go for a walk downtown. Folks will stop their cars and wave me across the street. People will take the time to be courteous to perfect strangers. We greet each other (perfect strangers) as we pass by with a "Good Morning" or "Good Afternoon." To strangers, that friendliness is often puzzling. But there is a certain gentility here that accompanies a lifestyle that is not dictated by heavy traffic and the dog eat dog world of high speed freeways and interstates on a daily basis. Not so for Floridiots, especially those from the densely populated southeast Florida area.
At the grocery store, cars entering into the parking lot always stop for pedestrians crossing the lanes to enter or exit the store. It is an absolute given for locals. When I see a car barreling through the parking lot and failing to yield to pedestrians, my immediate thought is that must be a Floridiot. Most times, I am right and usually the tag will indicate a driver from the east coast of Florida. Yesterday when I went to the store, there was a big SUV parked right outside one of the doors, blocking traffic entering into the parking lot. I looked at the tag and it was a Floridiot. Surprise, surprise. As I was leaving, there was another big van parked in the traffic lane outside the door. And guess what? It was another Floridiot!
Another definition from the urban dictionary expands on the reasons why so many people from Florida are "Floridiots."
Someone born in Florida. Subject to massive amounts of fluoride in their drinking water, thus making them do retarded stuff and having low IQ's. They are notorious for not knowing how to drive and causing insane amounts of unnecessary traffic accidents. They like to drive 90 miles per hour on the highway riding your butt when its foggy as all hell out, but when its clear as day they like to drive 10 miles under the speed limit, thus causing massive amounts of unnecessary traffic wasting massive amounts of your time. Someone who does not understand what the passing lane is.
"Look at this dumb Floridiot holding up all this traffic, THE LEFT LANE IS THE PASSING LANE... LET ME BY!!!!"
by logicaliforn April 12, 2011
One of the first things we did when we came to North Carolina was to purchase a North Carolina tag for my car (a PT Cruiser) which is the car we drive most often. I told my husband that I did not want to be automatically identified as a Floridiot every time I drove around town. For a long time, I avoided telling people where we came from, but eventually it comes out which leads to the second reason why so many natives and long time residents dislike Floridiots.
Far too many very well to do people from Florida come to western North Carolina and buy land high up on the side of a mountain, often where the slopes are the steepest and the environment is the most fragile. It is there that they build gigantic McMansions perched up on the side of the beautiful mountains that surround the towns of this area. Many times, these environmentally impacting houses are used for only a couple of weeks each year while spoiling the natural beauty of the mountains all year long. Occasionally one is lost to a landslide because some of these slopes are so unstable. There is a lot of hostility among the natives towards this type of development of the mountainsides.
From the very beginning, we had no desire to live upon the mountain, but wanted to live in town. I found that once the locals learned that we were not up on the mountain, we were far more accepted and were no longer considered Floridiots.
So how does one become NOT a Floridiot? It is the same way one avoids being labeled an ugly American. It is by learning and respecting local customs. But most Floridiots will never learn. I may be from Florida, but I hope I will never do anything to make others label me a Floridiot.
Comments
I stayed up late last night
and watched the debate. I am definitely not a night person and feel like crap this morning with what I call a debate hangover. I also watched the Young Turks discuss and analyze the debate afterwards. I read the comments posted here on Evening Blues this morning and could make a few myself. I understand the dissolusionment expressed in the comments here. I did not expect any revelations last night and basically did not see any.
My own take on the debate, from as unbiased a perspective as I can try to make, is this. HRC came off pretty well, particularly in the beginning. She had spent a lot of time practicing and her answers were definitely rehearsed. As the evening went along, she got weaker and weaker as she ran out of script. Many of her answers did not match her previous actions and no one really called her out on that. Bernie was Bernie. His lack of preparation showed too. People talked about how he was caught on gun control, but to me foreign policy was his Achilles heel. He needs to do much better there and no, Bernie, more war is not the answer. He failed to distinguish himself or connect the dots between our wasteful wars and the economic problems we face here at home. The other
threetwo, O'Malley and Chaffee, meh. And Jim Webb...is this guy a Democrat?Overall, the Democrats were substantive even if we do not like the substance compared to the Republicans. I actually thought Anderson Copper did a good job as debate moderator. He was pretty much equally hard on all the candidates and tried to keep them on point as to the questions being asked.
I think mimi did a very good job of summarizing the debate (as I saw it) in her comment on Evening Blues.

Morning gg and folks...
I think the big outcome of the debate is that Hillary Clinton did well enough that her inevitability will be trumpeted even louder by the corporate media, solidifying her lead in the primary. It all makes me lean more towards Jill Stein and the Greens.
Good Morning, gulfgal98, you are too kind
do you know that in the 33 years I am in the US, I never visited Florida? I found your explanations of the Floridian habits amusing. I definitely have to go down to Florida only to get some lessons in courtesy, which I need very much. I remember me and my niece, who also came to the US as a 24 year old, discussing German and American manners, defending the Americans' politeness against the argument often presented by Germans (in the privacy of their homes), namely that all the courtesy and politeness of the Americans is just superficial and that Americans' niceties aren't for real. After a couple of years in the US we both started to really appreciate the politeness of Americans (and their cute way of being nice, saying "honey", "sweety" and all sorts of other cutesy words to strangers to make them feel good and relaxed) and we are more trusting that the courtesy of Americans is indeed meant as what they are facevalue. We said to our folks home that we would take that kind of courtesy any day over the grumpy, rude German way of running around through life blockheaded (?). Our folks back home in Germany looked at us silently and thought, my, my how have they changed since they are in the US.
Bernie... guns and foreign policies ... he has to be more anti-guns and more anti-war and more against hegemonial leadership all over ther world. I learned that Hillary is a seasoned and strong debater, but that doesn't mean much content wise, just performance wise, like a good singer can make a song that's not that great still sound very impressive .
Bernie needs to swing against the MSM. They often can be enablers of the worst kind, imo.

Today our Peace vigil group
is doing a Climate Change vigil. I have done a little research to drop a few facts and figures on anyone who may stop to talk to us. I do not know this stuff like I do the war figures. I have learned that folks listen to facts that involve money so that is where my emphasis is going to be.
One of our guys, Don, likes signs so he has made some signs for us. I hope this goes well and maybe we might get some environmental activists to join us?
I am probably going to on and off today but will check back from time to time.

Good Morning
We used to make a pilgrimage to either Blowing Rock or Asheville. Our anniversary is Oct. 29, a little past peak but still a great time to visit. Two years ago, we spent the weekend at Grove Park Inn. A once in a lifetime treat.
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche -
Good morning, gg and thank you for your vigil

Thanks for today's OT, Nancy. We're once again
in the position to determine our primary residence, after our loss this August. It took us almost five years to figure it out the first time, so I don't relish having to revisit the matter.
Other than the climate, property, state income and sales taxes, and overall standard of living/lifestyle will be our primary considerations. One thing that the locations have in common is that they are university or college towns. Generally, we enjoy these communities partly for that reason, and our day-to-day experience does not vary that much [regardless of where we are].
Anyhoo, glad that you've managed not to be labeled a "Floridiot."
If I can locate it without spending too much time, I'll post a short video clip at EB later today. I had hoped to post it before last night's debate, to give some context to what might happen between candidates. But, I'm so 'snowed under' with extra duties/responsibilities lately, I can't devote several hours a day to blogging.
I think it will help explain the love fest that we witnessed last evening. Somewhere, Chuck Schumer, the architect of the 2016 Presidential race 'strategy,' has to be smiling.
Oh, when I finish the MOOC I'm enrolled in, I'll give an assessment of it, in case anyone here is interested in picking up some courses. Not bad, so far. (Also, much easier than any others that I've taken.) Of course, one does not earn any credits for this particular course--just certification, and knowledge gained. The others were for college credit, which is probably one reason for the difference in difficulty.
(I apologize in advance for typos and poor syntax--sorry!)

I apologize for
my drunken 'debate' ranting last night. I should never have watched it I knew it was going to be awful. I hope I didn't offend anyone or scare the children. I guess I've had it with partisan politics. Have a good day all of you. I think I'll stay off line for at least today. I can't seem to not get all emotionally involved and angry about the state of our politics. Hope is so cruel and so easy to fall for and right now I resent even Bernie for offering a political revolution that is based on the false Democratic establishment story line with slight variations.
i don't think
you need to apologize. No cats here stampeded at your remarks, and no police dropped by. ; ) I do think it was Bad of those mouthers to drive you to drink. Probably for this they should be brought up on Charges. Offline has its charms, though it can get weird there, too. For instance, this morning on the bus I heard a gaggle of young women strongly and loudly condemn men who drink a lot of soda, because it makes their semen taste rasty.
Shaz, if it makes any difference,
the video that I'm hoping to find is of Chuck Schumer--the member of Leadership who has crafted the strategy for the 2016 Presidential election--states that all the Dem Candidates must be 'on the same page,'--which clearly, they were last evening.
Heck, some bloggers [where I live blogged] thought that several candidates appeared to simply be "placeholders," probably to inoculate FSC from charges of being 'coronated.' (To my knowledge, Chafee and Webb don't carry out any campaign activities to speak of.)
Actually, I'm sort of glad that I'm very busy right now, and haven't the time to devote my energies to what seems to amount to mostly "Kabuki Theater."
Maybe the next debate will take a different turn.
Postscript: Ditto to hecate's sentiments!

it sounded so funny, I couldn't understand a word, so
no need to apologize ... heh, I have given up on being upset. I am just thinking into which cave I will crawl and hide from the evil world in the future. And then I get angry and say to myself, fuck that and leave it behind and go on.
https://www.euronews.com/live
That's a healthy attitude
mimi. Leaving it behind is much better then crawling in a cave. You'd think after Obama I would not get pulled into the hopey changey thing. Very disappointing to watch Bernie knuckle under to her highness. Snowden is a criminal outlaw says it all. Jill Stein looks to be my useless vote. I have never not voted since I was eligible but what a waste. I do care what was in HRC's e-mails and something does stink about Benghazi/Libya and SoS Hillary's mad machinations. Snowden, Manning and Wikileaks all the outlaws who released these so called diplomatic cables are not criminals they are heroes. I read today all across the net how Hillary won and think I was right in the first place, Bernie is the sheep dog who will herd the left back into line.
it looks like you are right with regards to
Bernie herding the left into line. Hopefully he will get more outspoken about foreign policy, suveillance, whistleblowers, and that he will not deny that Snowden did a great service to the people and deserves the "hero" status. Now Snowden even starts to be funny on twitter. What more can you ask from a hero? I guess when it comes to "hope" you can't help it, people need, it to go on. Even if there is no hope, they will just make themselves believe there is. I can't blame them too much for it. Hopelessness is a state of utter misery. I don't wish it on anybody. I hate it to give up. Watch your child giving up. It's horrible. Can't handle that.

No apologies are necessary
I certainly was not offended. Besides, those are just words and my dogs cannot read anyway.

your comments expressed your state of mind that was probably induced by a saccharine and pablum slime mix oozing out from your teevee set.
that debate was one of the most depressing things that i have seen in, oh, about four years. welcome to groundhog day!

The Repubs Benghazi Committee
(or whatever they call it) has nothing to do with FSC's email debacle.
That is, with the exception that this Committee stumbled across the fact that FSC had a personal email server (instead of making use of the official State Dept server) in the course of their investigation of the deaths of the 4 Embassy personnel.
Actually, it also came to light because a left-leaning group, Friends of the Earth, had their FOIA requests repeatedly denied/delayed, so they filed suit to obtain the material.
I hope to find time to dig out material on this matter, since for some reason, many folks are confusing the mishandling of official government materials, with the Benghazi Committee investigations.
They are two different matters.
Joe has posted several excellent pieces on this topic at EB. I wish that I could remember the dates, but I really can't.

Yeah, driving down here is kind of ridiculous. The problem with Florida is that while there are Floridians, there are also people like me--and people from all over come down here. And everyone drives differently depending on where they're from. I drive like a New Yorker (I know all of the shortcuts, I know when and where the traffic is jacked to avoid it, and I know how to identify bad drivers--and I use my turn signal, which people down here DO NOT DO...ugh)...that's where I'm from. But everyone is from somewhere else. And the tourists...the tourists. Ugh. They're sooo bad. I generally avoid the attractions area and I-Drive. It's all tourists asking you to roll your window down and then them asking for directions.
This is best demonstrated in high congestion areas. Driving in Miami is a nightmare. It's like that chariot race in Ben Hur, especially on I-95.
