Open Zap, SF hippie art and love

open thread.jpg

Besides Beardsley, Micheal Angelo, or Botticelli and other Italian artists with some Germans and Americans other cultures thrown in for good measure, Zap Comix and the artist's of the street and the fine 'artist's' from the 60's have figured large in my lifelong artistic journey. So here we go into the Zap, album covers, and what ever the artist's I have selected used to express themselves. I'm covering 2 artists from Zap, and some poster artist's. i seem to have focused on some 60's artists from San Fransisco.

Rick Griffen

In 1964, he left Surfer and briefly attended Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts), where he met his future wife, artist Ida Pfefferle. That same year, he hung out with the group of artists and musicians known as the Jook Savages.

Victor Moscoso

images_1_0_0_0_0.jpg

Moscoso was the first of the rock poster artists of the 1960s era with formal academic training and experience. After studying art at Cooper Union in New York City and at Yale University, he moved to San Francisco in 1959. There, he attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where he eventually became an instructor.Moscoso's use of vibrating colors was influenced by painter Josef Albers, one of his teachers at Yale. He was the first of the rock poster artists to use photographic collage in many of his posters.

As if "Stein is Nader" is going to work on someone who, today, is planning to vote for Stein. Those of us who were made at Nader in 2001 have repented.

Supposedly, Nader's biggest sin was making Florida close enough to steal, allowing the SCOTUS to give us Bush. Okay, Bush was horrible. However, the single worst thing Bush did was go to war against Iraq and Afghanistan after 911 for the deeds of 20 or 21 criminals. If any nation should have been attacked, it should have been Saudi Arabia. They were financed by Saudi Arabia and telethons held in Saudi Arabia. Hillary voted for both those wars and tried to help Bushco with a con job to sell the Iraqi invasion to America. If you believe she did that because Bush duped her and not because it was DLC policy and she is a neoliberal neocon, I would be happy to offer to sell you the best bridges in my inventory.

Bernie had said he "might" campaign with Canova and now nobody is home.

Apparently we have another betrayal for the good of the cause and because he just can't help himself. The more Bernie betrays principles, the angrier I get. Just like Obama, he is turning out to be another liar saying what wanted to be heard. Must have surprised the shit out of all of them including Bernie when he kept winning. Wasn't in the script.

Oh, how I want my money back. Guess it isn't just Kos I have to worry about picking my pocket.

I take Canova at face value that there was strategy disagreement. I'm talking about the fact that he can't get a phone call. He discussed this on TYT. I am not a patient person. It didn't take me long to add up Obama's 2008 appointments to see what a lie he was making of his campaign. Bernie has two strikes if he quit on Canova. I don't know if I need three.

You know CStS, I'm not buying it. There is no proof he was threatened, and if he was, the only way to be safe is to come out and tell the world you were threatened, what you were threatened with, and who did it. and people pressed him on it early--where was he going to get the political power to *actually* push back?

As for proof, of course there is none. It would be hard to get proof of something like that. That's why I'm not deeply invested in whether or not people believe it--it's just what I believe.

Here's the possibilities, as I see them:

1)Bernie was insincere from the beginning.

The way the media responded to Sanders, from the beginning of his campaign to mid-June, suggests otherwise. They began by simply denying him oxygen, and when it got too big to suppress altogether, they started mocking him; when that didn't fully work, they started making character attacks on him; all the while they constantly harped on the idea he couldn't win.

That's not how they respond to plants (like Martin O'Malley). It's how they respond to threats. And since Big Media works for The Bastards With Bucks, I take it that they were responding to a threat to said Bastards.

2)Bernie's tired and gave up the fight when it got too hard (no help from Democratic party).

That seems very much against his personality as we've seen it over some decades. He's a workaholic and indefatigable.

3)Bernie's dumb. Really, really, dumb. Dumb enough that he can ignore both the massive hostility of the DNC and the fact that Howard Dean did exactly the same thing ten years ago and failed colossally. He really thinks this strategy is going to work.

All I can go on here is my impression of him, from the time I was living in DC and attending Congressional hearings and such. Although to the right of me, he sure as hell never seemed stupid about power and how it works.

4)Bernie was bought off with bucks.

Um--no. If that were going to happen, it would have happened sometime in the last 50 years. Why does a guy refuse bribes for 50 years, refuse them throughout his presidential run, and then, in the aftermath, suddenly lick his lips and take the cash?

5)Bernie was bought off with policy or political advancement.

This goes back to Bernie being stupid, as only an idiot would think that the Clinton Party is going to give him any actual progressive policy concessions. As for advancement, I don't think pride is any more an issue for him than greed is.

6)Bernie was intimidated. For my money, that's the most likely explanation.

I do believe that's the most likely, can't forget his facial expression sitting with a stone face and with arms and hands tightly clinched to his legs like frozen up, awaiting something to happen to him on the DNC floor, (before his turn came up to stand up and give it all away to HRC).

I just wonder HOW that intimidation was done.

And if I lived in FL-23, man, I'd be out on the street corner, screaming into megaphones about that pig of a woman who is preparing to steal a Florida election. My money's on "she doesn't want to go to DC", so they'll make sure she stays firmly entrenched, so that Florida can be fracked and stripped bare. And probably sunk.

Why does anyone want to believe that Bernie Sanders could suddenly be "bought off"? Where does that even come from? Because they thought Barack Obama was sincere, too? Hello? Bueller? The man did not have a 30 year track record.

Is it easier to believe the idea that Sanders was "bought off", than it is to admit to one's self that their government is completely and totally corrupted and guys like Sanders can't fix it? It must be, but I'm getting a little tired of seeing otherwise-intelligent people considering it. I'm sorry, but it's just stupid--if the man was going to sell out he would have done it years ago.

Your #6 is something I've been saying for a long, long time now. Shit got real when they started fixing primaries. And yet, many continue to sit around the blogosphere, acting like Bernie must have been the bad guy. Makes zero, zilch, zip, nada sense.

Of course, doing anything to active before you sleep can aggravate insomnia, but I do tend to avoid visual work when I'm trying to establish a regular sleep pattern. Because, I just don't get it.

My DH has a really good gut check on people. I asked him if he had any hits that Bernie wasn't an honest dealer, very authentic. (I'm more gullible, or want to believe really badly). He said he didn't get a whiff of the Obama syndrome.

I watched his "endorsement". I never saw body language and grimacing like that day. I don't have any specific CT or anything, but I really would like to get what happened.

Or was it a calculated politico's reaction to a losing scenario?

Why didn't he address those who contributed to him. Seems out of character and his history. Concern for "incitement" or the appearance thereof?

Any reasonable possibilities will be listened to by me at least. It's bugging me.

Thanks, Harry

have to have intimate knowledge about his exposure by his parents and others in their extended friends of the family, to what right-wing, racists, and Nazi Germany's had done to them or their grand parents. To me it comes down to what influenced him as a kid or grand kid of immigrants from Poland most. One would have to look into that to know what he is more afraid of, right-wing supremacists and neo-nazi style and super capitalist loving politicians taking over power or neo-liberals betraying the people through co-operation with oligarchs. It's telling that Sanders was always an independent, not a liberal social democrat, nor democratic socialist attached to the US groups who represent those.

It was also telling that the left folks like Hedges were dead angry about him running with the Democrats from the very beginning, while for example Sheer had more understanding why Sanders did decide to campaign as a Democratic Party member.

It's hard to know. I don't believe much in the "guilt tripped" scenario. He never fell into the trap to use him being a Jew to bring into the play, using the victim status of his ancestors for making others feel guilty to not support him for that. So, I think, he is very aware if others, who bring the "victim" status into play to influence others to support them in their struggles for human rights issues and more. He hesitates to get influenced by such moves. That's imo also one reason he was so easily attacked as being insensitive to the "black lives matter" movement in the beginning.

I think he knows a thing or two about "making people feel guilty" and he is not the guy to play to that tune.

All just my personal opinion, no facts or knowledge to support it from his earlier years.

this:

Look, my father's family was wiped out by Hitler in the Holocaust. I know about what crazy and radical and extremist politics mean. I learned that lesson as a tiny, tiny child when my mother would take me shopping, and we would see people working in stores who had numbers on their arms because they were in Hitler's concentration camps.

And this:

A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932. He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important.

His *faction* got enough votes in 1932 to worry the Establishment, so he was *appointed* to office thinking that would satisfy him and allow him to be controlled. (Wrong-o! And some people knew it at the time.)

The guy who appointed him (and who actually did win both rounds of the election - he didn't get a majority in the first round, requiring a runoff), President Hindenburg, was 84, suffering from advanced senility, and under intense pressure from the pro-Adolf faction.

Of course, most people don't know the inside details - they just "know" that Adolf got into power and assume he must have been elected.

2. Intimidated - There is only one way to be safe under this circumstance and that is to shine a light on it. If it was physical intimidation, he should have called the cops and pressed charges. If it was political intimidation, who cares. Would he rather be President or Senator? Not to mention, he's old enough to retire anyway. If it was blackmail (the taxes he never made public?), my god he should have known all skeletons would be unearthed sooner or later and that brings us back to stupid.

My guess is he knew they wouldn't let him have the nomination -- by hell or high water. Rampant cheating had already occurred with no consequences. So to keep his chair positions in the senate he made the endorsement deal. And that deal means continue support for Hellery until election day by subsequent appearences on talk shows and interviews. some people (not naming any names) are prejudiced against them for no good reason yet like soppy, boring Grace Slick imitations just because...oh, I don't know why!

But here's something with some edge to it.

with Cipollina in the '80s. He was a good guy.

he didn't overplay. I'm not a big fan of "too many notes" or how fast someone is. Cippolina played what he heard. You can tell. From out of his head into ours. And when something comes from out of someone's head it always sounds better than from out of his fingers on licks he's throwing in for show.

on the too fast and too many. And I think probably it's the Dino Valenti-dominated tunes that shaz would eschew. He sort of took over. Causing Cipollina to quit the band.

you still hold a grudge against It's A Beautiful Day because the wouldn't get off the stage when it was your turn. Bad David La Flam a hippie who was as full of himself as a high school football hero? Just joking. I do like the cover painting and the White Bird thing.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

Why did the Bernie shoe waver's hit my art and music OT this morning? What they don't have enough essays about this political pol worshiping and loathing crap on the recent list?. Good grief enough is enough. This site has gone full bore pol Bernie/Clinton persona speculation Our revolution my ass. I'm taking a week off cc99% I just don't care about the hype involving Dem. pols or the damn fixed election. Man if it herds like a sheepdog chances are it is one. Then there is the belief that even Assange is riding to the rescue. I don't think he is working to get rid of Hillary. It's getting as bad as it was at Dkos with pol worship substituting Bernie for Obomber. See you after my self imposed time out. Who gives a rats ass if Bernie's not answering Canova's calls. Maybe Bernie is embarrassed about this whole mess of an election. At least I'll get my washing done.

I like the After Bathing at Baxter cover. It was done by a Japanese artist and illustrator. The American release had an airplane. This cover is much better.

Mine need be cleaned, 4 surfaces where possible. This raking sun is embarrassing as to my skilz (none) as housekeeper. I am one who takes off window screens end-of-open-window season because they interfere with a clear view. And nevermind windows, some are 3 stories off-ground. Peace out.

It's understandable, given the circumstances.

The way to move along to something else is to write a big diary that takes the next step. Or plans the next step. Or imagines it.

When people have no work, no plan, and are starting to suspect they have no hope, they tend to stop talking positively or practically, and rather focus on who's to blame.

It's not surprising, really.

It's worse than usual now, because many suspect they've been offered busywork and a fake plan, which is worse than none at all.

So, like I said, the thing to do is to take a stab at what the next step might be. But that takes a lot of work and energy, and for many of us energy is at a premium.

If nobody else does it in the next day or so, I probably will take a stab at it myself.

No. They are not.

They're not necessary.

They've been obviated.

They're larval.
