Friday Night Photography Open Thread

Howdy folks! Steve J. is taking a little time off, so I thought I'd put up a sort of free-form open thread for folks to share their work and appreciate it together.

So, here are some photos I took recently down by the Monocacy River in Maryland at a place called Lilypons:

I especially like the four-leaved lily-pad. It looks lucky.

I love what you did with the depth of field in this image. Do you remember the camera settings? It looks surreal except that isn't the word I'm trying to come up with.

sometimes being a surreal interpretation of what is directly in front of the lens, but you already know that. In this case, I had nothing to do with setting the depth of field. It was a result of rushing to take out my camera before the moment disappeared and not even seeing the leaves of the bush right in front of the lens. Some of my favourite photographs are an accident.

Sometimes I can spend time waiting for the light to be just right to take a picture and other times I just stop my car, jump out and grab a great photo.
I was traveling somewhere through bleak country and pulled over to use the 'woods' and then looked behind me and saw the coolest trail going up through some rocks and trees so I grabbed the camera and took the shot. It's one of my favorite photos.

The owner went up top & tried to "shake" my work & could not get a movement out of it.
He actually mentioned to me how impressed he was with the precision I cut all my framing members.
He listens to me work with my guys, calling out cut measurements, & has no clue how I work out these numbers.
I explained how easy it is, if I start with a level, square, concrete foundation, the wall height & window openings.
Once I do my layout for studs & rafters, everything just falls into place. I know the measurements of every piece of framing before I need it.
There are no changes in measurements except for a few "catch-up" blocks.
All blocks are "gang-cut" for all rafters.
I "gang-cut" all window & door trimmers & all studs for the complete job.
I also pre-cut all opening "headers" for the whole job.
If you know how to do "lay-out", you are the master of your job.
Screw that up & you fail

It took me over a year to connect the noise to the critter. I have only seen a few. One year, I imported plants in the fall and had a spring peeper buried in a root ball wake up and peep for a week inside. I found it, and released it before frost.

Lovely composition of the sky.
I remember filling out forms for the insurance on a job site.
My partner asked me what I had answered on the question about how far I could see.
I told him I`d answered, "26 trillion miles".
He told me that was ridiculous.
I told him to go outside at night & look at the stars.
If you can see stars, you can see that far, right.
He told me that that`s not what they meant on the questionnaire.
I told him, that till they amend the questionnaire my answer stands.
So I applaud you for "Seeing" like me.
Great shot.

And spotted a White-spotted tussock moth caterpillar. It was probably looking for someplace to make its cocoon.

Pretty to look at, but those hairs can deliver a nasty sting. Even the cocoons can give you a nasty dermatitis.

Talk about dermatitis. We had most of our trees (oaks) defoliated one year. We plus neighbors did aerial sraying of Bt the next year. A few damp springs brought a fungus that took care of them.

Hey boriscleto,
Beautiful images of that moth caterpillar, but I have no skin in the game.

And as for your sig line;

Then God created light
There was still nothing
But now, you could see it.

In 1917 G. Leicester Thomas, Sr., a Frederick county landowner and entrepreneur, turned his goldfish and waterlily hobby into a business, Three Springs Fisheries. The business was so successful that in 1925 Leicester expanded and purchased the current 250-acre tract of land that is Lilypons Water Gardens.

Just five years later, the first Three Springs Fisheries catalog was mailed with great success! By 1935, the U.S.Postal Service decided that a post office must be established to handle the mail order parcels.

And the name for this new post office? Leicester's favorite operatic diva, Lily Pons, was then at the height of her career, playing lead roles in Hollywood films and thrilling audiences as a regular star at American and international opera houses. How perfect to name a place full of lily ponds after Lily Pons, the graceful opera star! Lily's publicity staff agreed, but the U.S. Postal Services wanted one word-thus Lilypons, Maryland became the new post office. On June 20, 1936, the post office was dedicated to Lily Pons. Miss Pons was present for the event, which was celebrated with much pomp and circumstance!
