Images and Blogs

The progressive blogosphere has changed beyond recognition since it first came into being. Many of the names are the same as they have always been but the agendas have changed completely. The original pioneers wanted a platform, they wanted to get their views into the public domain that had no other outlet. There was certainly no money in blogging - in fact those that practised it had to invest their own finances. Then, over time these same people became assimilated - they were borged by the Democratic establishment. There are of course honorable exceptions, those bloggers who never sold out and there is an alternative, harsher assessment than mine, that these original pioneers always had their eye on the prize so to speak. That they wanted to be ‘Establishment’ as much as the usual main street media suspects but needed a different way in.

This change from enthusiast with integrity to just another media outlet can obviously be tracked by reading the words of the blogger’s and their content providers. Just about everyone reading this will be familiar with that process. A sudden shift from anti-Neoliberal/supply side writing to social issue commentary is an obvious indicator. Pacifism/non interventionism to full on Neocon is a more recent development.

Now to the point (finally) a slightly different but analogous process has happened with the images used by these bloggers and their publications. Originally, the image that headed a post tended to be whatever was easily available. It was almost always an afterthought - a bit of pain as far as most writers were concerned. Outside of the political field several early bloggers attempted to do away with images altogether but their pageviews suffered so much they went back to using them.

Since the takeover by the Dem party machine things have changed drastically. Pictures sell and remember, that is what so called progressive blog owners are in the business of. They are no longer seeking to get their view across - they are selling product (or selling hatred of an opposing companies product).

Ever wondered why the same image gets used over and over again? It’s because it works pure and simple. Repetition is the marketer’s main tool. You may hate the image but that doesn’t matter. It is no coincidence that the assimilation of TOP was occurring at the same time as that idiotic clown photograph was appearing at the top of just about every ‘ha ha stupid GOP’ type post.

The current favorite is the Trump image where he is pointing in the air and biting his bottom lip. This is used over and over again by multiple so called progressive blogs. He looks unhinged and very angry. Interestingly his degree of anger varies a little across different versions of the same image. This is because his face is redder in some copies than in others - Bloggers are reddening his face in image editing software.

Also, notice how the images of Hillary vary depending upon the message of the day and even the timing within the campaign. During the primaries there were lots of soft friendly Hillary pictures - again softened in editing software (often very badly). These images were squarely targeted at those concerned with social issues. The exception to this was when the GOP or Trump said something really stupid regarding Natsec - then we would get stern but competent Hillary. Of course now that the campaign has gone hard right/full neocon we are seeing all military Hillary all the time.

Images have their own language and that can be read just as easily as words on a page. It is usually very easy to tell where a publication stands on any given topic by the image it chooses to head up a piece. Here are just a few obvious clues:

Darkening an image makes the person look untrustworthy/shifty
Shooting from a low angle makes the person look heroic (although done badly this has the opposite effect)
Upping reds and oranges in the skintones is a huge negative - makes the viewer think of anger issues, alcoholism, ill health (think just how many politicians get labelled orange - much of that is down to Photoshop)

I suspect that most readers of this will be pretty clued in with regard to the whole concept of the image being used as a part of the sell but I am constantly surprised how many people have no idea that the process of image selection is a very deliberate one - and a very goal driven one.

Some photos that have nothing to do with politics

These photographs are all of the place where I lived when I first moved to the US.

I'll be away from the computer for about an hour but will be back
Thanks for reading as always.

your introductory image of Trump to do this mash up a few months ago. I had to tilt the head to a slightly different position and lighten the orange skin tone to match that of Will Ferrell's body but the facial expression was perfect for moar cowbell.

Then it took a lot of touching up around Trump's head to get rid of Will's curly hair.

was the transition area from Trump's head to Will's neck to make it look realistic. And matching the dots on the wall to hide Will's hair., it took a clone tool to accomplish that.

thing that I always have problems with in Photoshop - the tools have got better but I still find it really hard.
The cloning looks pretty good to me. As for matching up skin that can be tough. Skin tones are not easy to work with.
I am much happier with a camera in my hands or making global adjustments (Lightroom type stuff) than I am in front of Photoshop - that is a necessary last resort evil in my work flow.

hair is problematic. There are plugins that make it a lot easier but a lot of times I'll get it as close as I can and then use the eraser set to it's smallest, finest point to make cuts in the hair to make new separations.

It's been a while since I did that one but I think I got by just lightening up the skin tone a bit and then maybe a little contrast work. The area that's being worked with needs to be selected with a selection tool.

I'm in awe of you guys with the fine camera work, that eludes me.

I'm like you KnucK, the hair is gray but no need for plugs, still got most of it.

How you doing my friend? Now all we need is for Not Henry Kissinger (Night Owl) to drop by and as Jake Elwood would say""We're putting the band back together".

I don`t care what anyone says, I`m ready for the band to regroup. I`m working a construction project, (see below) but my "axe" is in tune & sharp. I`m ready to hit the road.
Is "Not Henry Kissenger" in?

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

for 6 or 7 years now, it's not so bad once you learn what the tools can do.

That was all done with the quick selection tool to cut out Trump's head and then the eraser tool to clean up around the cut out. Then basically all the touch up around the head was done with the eye blotter tool to get a color sample to make accurate matchups and then a brush tool to paint over unwanted pixels. The dots on the wall could only be matched up using a clone tool. Thats about it other than using selectors to alter the skin tones.

I knocked that out in probably about an hour.

I have a real love hate relationship with the software - Nothing better for fixes such as cloning a piece of garbage off of a lawn, resizing, optimizing etc. I am impressed by the new upsizing filter - took an image from 2k pixels to 4k across and it was usable. Lettering is excellent as is its vector handling generally. I use it as more as a design tool than a photography/compositing one.

Saying that, I know enough to do retouching for portrait photography but that is not too demanding - no head transplants Smile

pretty closely. Then it was just a matter of enlarging the head to adequately cover the original. This is ArtRage software, not Photoshop. It's not perfect, but served the purpose.

I will get my first tomatoes this week, from potted plants. And these tomatoes are BLUE. Now at breaker with blue-indigo tops and green bases. Cherry types. My digital camera is functional, I can import jpegs and upload. Yay. Still need to simplify my jpegs. WIP...

(I've had a couple of glasses of wine)

This applies for downloading from your computer only (not embedding from another site [e.g. Flickr] to do that just copy the code from that site but make sure that it is for a smaller then full size version. They normally offer different sizes such as 640px 1024px etc. I would go for a smallish one around 640px)

I resize my images to 500 pixels across - (but high quality) - these will always be under the c99 maximum
I think the c99 limit is 2mb - this is lower than many cameras produce
Let me know what software you use - and I'll be more specific)

The downloading is a bit complicated:
click on the image - first icon on the left
File browser box appears
wait a while
upload magically appears top left of the file browser -click on it
select file from your computer
that file will show itself in the file browser and its name will be highlighted
double click on it
then click 'Ok' on the small insert/edit image box that appears
its a pain at first but after a couple of times it becomes fairly automatic

Apologies for the long winded version

there are four town homes going up next to our property at the moment and the process is fascinating - I've got to go around and take load of photographs - the homes have already been sold and the owners are really cool about me wandering around and taking pics. I used to work in construction and believe me, photographing the process is much easier!

I went there a couple years ago for a Welsh Terrier meetup. It was a fairly chilly day, so we didn't get to take full advantage of everything there, but my water baby dog just loved splashing around in the water. : ) There's going to be another Welshie meetup next month - I hope it will be warm enough to really enjoy the beach!

here called Mount Baldy which is now closed because it has sinkholes. The whole area is now closed off - I've sledded down it a few times and it is one huge dune. That is between where I used to live and Michigan City (which is in Indiana)

There are sizable ones here that are still completely accessible though.
