Server Upgrade

The c99p server was upgraded late this morning and took us down for a while. There should now be a noticeable improvement in performance.

The database on this site gets a massive workout every day with all of the essays, comments, thumbs up, etc., hit after hit after hit on the database. What's the biggest culprit? The thumbs up rating system. Would it help performance if we got rid of the thumbs up rating? Yep. Do I want to get rid of the thumbs up rating? Nope. So we live with it.

Of the various ratings systems and moderation, this site has by

far the best methods I've personally used. While I haven't seen all of the possibilities, it sure allows good exchanges and more freedom of expression, both healthy ways of exploring our options.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I for one, would like to see a thermometer which has what it costs to run, and what you have on hand. Those visuals really help people see what it takes to keep this blog home up and running.

for all you do! Your devotion and dedication to this site, and us, is an inspiration. I certainly hope you find some joy in all you do!

I agree with keeping the thumbs up --- isn't it strange that such a simple tool takes so much data --- computer language is Greek to me lol!

The thumbs up part is really great. Sometimes (often) people

write things here for which they should receive some credit. Thumbs up lets lazy people like me show their appreciation without typing War and Peace.

And I also like that its anonymous. That was a really good idea.

Thanks, Johnny. It seems fast and clean now, but I never know if

it is me or not. Same here

First thing I do is start messing around with my computer settings, etc. Very dangerous thing to do when you don't know what in the hell you are doing. The improvement is amazing.

The thumbs up are powerful, way more than the thumbs down,

because if you only can get thumbs up, it makes you think a lot about what you wrote, when you didn't get a thumbs up. Funny that, isn't it?

Getting a script error...

when with the pic file browser loads.

Still works if I stop script, but there may be some stray code somewhere gumming it up.
