Bernie's example is outstanding no matter how you feel about his support for Clinton

Everything happens in a context. The actions of Bernie sanders are in one of the most unique contexts in history.

Bernie made a conscious decision to join the Democratic Party knowing more about what it was than we have come to learn now. He knew he had to bite the bullet more than once to try to accomplish something and his accomplishments are beyond anyone's in this day and age.

Even at this moment his focus has remained positive and he only seeks doing more. He has no inclination to destroy what he has gained by tearing any one down. He has let them take care of that themselves and they did it quite well.

I have the luxury of leaving the Democratic Party and its filth and corruption. He really does not. He is a fighter and he will stay and fight. As long as he keeps this stance they can not escape his scrutiny.

He is one man but a very strong man. My support for him has not waivered even though it hurts to see him have to become so deeply involved in the Clinton campaign. I see the context and I understand. More power to you Bernie! Keep on fighting. I will too.

It's not easy for any of us, but change is a struggle no matter what is changing. We are bring taken kicking and screaming, and I think it's a good thing. Why?

Maybe this time we won't stop fighting until we accomplish our goal. When Nixon resigned, so did we. We thought the gubbmit was in good hands. We didn't see Reagan and neoliberalism coming.

It's time to stay involved at every level. If we don't learn the lesson, shame on us.

Yet Bernie's support for a plainly corrupt and dishonest pro-TPP, pro-Bankster, pro-War, pro-Monsanto, pro-Fracking, anti-Medicare-For-All, pro-PoliceState, pro-Drug-War, pro-Regime-Change, pro-Election-Theft Establishment puppet like Hillary friggin Clinton is totally against what his whole Movement was about, and both undermines it (cuts it off at the knees) and just makes the crooked Democratic Establishment more stronger, more arrogant, and less likely to ever change.

It sends the message that there is no cost whatsoever to the crooked Democratic Establishment brazen cheating, and their long history of deliberately snuffing out and squashing any Progressive political movements or candidates.

That's the message that it sends: Corruption? Oligarch Rule? Hey, it's all okay, It's all good, Just fall in Line..

Well, I ain't buying it folks. Sanders F--ed up. He could have said: "I have 13 Million voters, earn my vote Hillary or else we all walk away -- and put Dr. Jill Stein and the Green Party well over the 15%-20% threshold (for the Debates), possibly pull of an historic surprise."

But instead of using his leverage, and making Clinton feel the consequences, he whimped out and bent over for her and the crooked DNC -- as she proceeded to hire crony Bankster & TPP buddy Tim Kaine, and Debbie Wasserman Sh*tz, (a sad warning of what her administration and choices will be like) and stands ready now to start War with Russia.

It was truly amazing watching the Hillary supporters desperately flail at him and his character, making shit up on the fly. They even trotted out Elijah Cummings to suggest Bernie had no civil rights cred...boy did that backfire.

Bernie is not perfect, but his body of work, as a civil servant is unimpeachable. All those neo-lib crooks could do is disagree with his positions because he is scandal free. He was the perfect candidate to deliver a Dem Socialist agenda, so they cheated. Everyone knows they cheated and yet she will likely become President.

I am only disappointed that the Party could not see past the inevitability of a deeply flawed presumptive nominee to embrace a man who might have rejuvenated the party of FDR for decades.

Even in his loss, Sanders brought something vital and good to millions that may yet end up changing the course of American history.

It would be beneficial to the Dem Party, since he would be required to help fundraise for them. As an Independent, he had no such requirement.

Don't remember the date--but it should be in the program's video archive. It was roughly 2 months ago, give or take.

I am grateful to Senator Sanders for waking me and others up. I had given up on the Democratic Party after that so-called food safety law, which I hoped against hope Mrs. Obama, she of the organic WH garden, might persuade the president to veto. Why that law in particular? Because, for those of us who cannot afford health insurance or care, the quality of the food we eat becomes a matter of urgent concern, but try to explain that to the "privilege" brigade at DK.

The facts on the ground have not changed, no matter how much the Clintonistas try to pretend otherwise. Clinton agreed to a few things in the "platform", which can be duly submitted to Congress, to be voted down by the Republicans. So what?

What we need to do now, I think, is first make our disaffection known to local Democratic Party officials--politely, but in no uncertain terms--and then, like I said before, put the fear of God into our elected representatives. I intend to let the woman running for congress in my district know that I expect no rubberstamping of Clinton's war plans.

Bisbomian, we've talked on these pages enough to know that we have a similar life experience from our time pushing heavy metal all over the world. I have no doubt that you like me have served under good, maybe even great leaders, as well as those we would only follow out of morbid curiosity. I had the privilege to serve as a T-37 IP and later as a flight commander under a wing commander at an Air Training Command base from 1979-81. This man had been the base commander at the same base when I had been a student pilot in '74-5. I did not know him then other than by name. Later I came to know him well enough that he called me by my first name and permitted me to call him sir or colonel. I also had several contacts with him later in '82-84 at Randolph when I was at PIT when he was a new BG at HQATC. I came to deeply respect the man and the leader beginning with the story I'm about to tell.

Fall 1980 and I'm standing in line to renew my TX drivers license. I'd been up very early since it was early week (what else?), had completed an unusually short 11 hour duty day, and had barely made it to DMV before it closed. Two people in the line next to mine were talking about the aircraft accident out at the base that they'd just heard about on the car radio. I finished my business and headed home. The local radio had little else but by the time I crawled into bed before another pre-dawn drive to work that a T-37 had crashed coming off the auxiliary field enroute to the MOAs. The solo student on board was reported to have died in the crash.

I learned a whole lot more the next day and during the coming weeks as the accident investigation was underway. The investigators crawled all over the squadron, E Flight which had been the student's home for the T-37 phase of UPT, and all of the support and command organizations that make flight training possible. The wing commander held a wing commander's call for all of the permanent party members of the squadron some time later. I seem to remember it was about a week after the crash. He updated us on the still early investigation, told us what he could about the facts that were known and publicly releasable, and made an extraordinary statement. He said that at that moment this crash looked like a simple loss of control for unknown reasons and that nothing about the jet, the student's training, or how the wing conducted its primary function of producing pilots for the USAF appeared to be suspect. An aircraft accident almost always resulted in repercussions for someone in those days. A wing commander's, as well as subordinates', job and career were always on the line if there were causes found attributable to them. Way too often the simple fact a jet went down equaled heads rolling. He continued by saying that he would resign rather than allow any consequences to be levied anyone in his chain of command as long as the people involved in this student's training had done their jobs. He was ready to fall on his sword instead of accept his people being punished for doing their jobs correctly. He went on to say that as far as he could see the wing and it's organizations were performing admirably under an incredibly heavy load and that we should continue doing business as usual rather than worry about this tragic accident.

I was in my seventh year of service but had never heard a senior officer go so far out on a limb before. Many of us thought he'd taken a huge risk while others were sure that when push from the four star came to shove he'd tuck tail and do what he was told. Still, his stock soared and respect for him grew beyond anything I'd seen in my time in service. Everyone got back to business.

You might imagine my surprise when several weeks later I got a call on Sunday night from my squadron commander. That was unusual. He told me that there would be some very hard to swallow news related to the crash breaking over the wing on Monday morning. He would say nothing more than that the flight commander, his assistant, and the dead student's IP had all been fired. The new flight commander was the recent past E Flight commander who had agreed that I should be his new assistant. Did I want the job? I told him that I couldn't say no if that was where they wanted me. I was supposed to start another early week but E Flight was on late week so I should report to E Flight in the morning. He said Frank, my new boss, was expecting my call. He also said there was a wing commanders call during what would have been the second section's morning briefing. The squadron was standing down for that period to hear what the wing CC had to say.

Frank had more for me than I expected so I was ready for the uproar and chaos well underway on my arrival near noon. Everyone knew what had happened to the three members of E Flight. The commander was already packing up his house to return to his previous assignment flying B-52s. His assistant had been given a non-job job in the section commander's office while he ran out the rest of his ATC tour. The previously up and coming young 1LT IP golden boy was preparing to start B-52 school ASAP. We never again saw either the major or LT.

The anger around the squadron was incredible. Motherfucker and the wing CC's name were interchangeable. It really looked like there were going to be more than a few careers thrown away at the commander's call.

The event began with the wing safety officer giving a brief synopsis of the soon to be released accident report. The accident board had determined that there was an 80-85% probability the perfectly good jet had been intentionally flown into the ground. The student was the son of a two star AF general who was personal friends with the ATC four star. He had been a very weak student constantly on the edge of being eliminated from the program and felt intense pressure to please/not disappoint his father. There was another student at the same base during this time, a captain and former missile maintenance office, who was of the same caliber of student. He'd become a master at the tactical DNIF, Duty Not Involving Flying for medical reasons, whenever he stopped progressing and elimination loomed. He'd get a review ride or two when he was returned to flight status which was usually enough to get him through a block of training. The accident student had been one of several acolytes but he was running out of rope faster than he could tie on more. The student had been careful to use a different flight surgeon every time he needed to be DNIF and the system in place at the hospital had failed to catch the doctor shopping. Nobody supervising the student had caught on to his suicidal intentions despite many unstated indicators.

His IP, also the flight standardization officer, was carrying him. Documentation showed that he passed the student on weekly tests that he should have failed. Things he'd told the flight leadership and fellow instructors indicated that he'd let the student progress on several occasions when he clearly should have graded him unsatisfactory. The special monitoring status (SMS) program required by the syllabus was poorly managed and was failing to ensure proper standards and practices were followed. They found a syllabus deviation which was about the worst error possible. In general people up and down the chain of command were not doing their jobs.

The wing king took over. He started out restating the board's conclusion and the four star's intention to concur indicated to him that there had been failures in the way we did business as well as failures of supervision up and down the chain of command. He said that every one of the officer's in the chain from him down to the IP had received some level of non-judicial punishment ranging from Article 15 down to a letter of reprimand from the four star. The flight commander and IP were no longer members of the wing and had received four star directed new assignments, both to B-52s. He went on to state that he had made a promise to fall on his sword rather than allow his people to be unfairly judged and punishment. He said that he had been fully intending to do just that until he read the full accident report and been formally briefed on the investigators' findings. He said that he could not disagree on any point that showed we had all, him included, failed to do our jobs. He said he had decided that he could live up to his deal and resign but then someone else would have to clean up his mess. His mess. He'd take his lumps and lead the wing back to being the outstanding organization he knew us to be.

Then he did something extraordinary to the quiet murmur of enraged officers. He dismissed all field grade officers, major and above, and ordered the door to be closed and locked. He pulled out a chair to the front of the briefing room and sat down. He took off the eagles from his dress blues and put them on the floor. He said "Have at me. I know you're angry as hell. Whatever any of you says will stay in this room until I put those eagles back on and we leave this room. Nothing you say will ever go beyond this room and there will be no repercussions. You have the floor." He caught hell. It was both raucous and respectful. The session ended about an hour and a half later. There were some who refused to be swayed at by his answers and explanations. A promise is a promise arguments mostly. They couldn't see the discrepancy in that position. Even those who would not be swayed had respect for him sitting there taking all the anger thrown at him when he sure as hell didn't have to. In the end we put together the best wing in ATC.

I know, cool story bro. WTF does this have to do with Bernie? Bernie stuck to what he told the DNC what he'd do if he didn't win after the DNC screwed him over with lies, deceit, and rat fucking. How can he live up to a promise when the other DNC violated their duty to treat all candidates fairly and alike? Your colonel had every right to break a promise that depended on people having done their job. WTF? Doesn't Bernie have the same right? Yeah, I suppose he does.

My pointless is that Bernie makes his first commitment to us to do whatever he thinks is best to further the interests of the 99%. The election possibilities for him are gone. His commitment is now to his revolution and stopping Trump, a second promise he made. His judgment is that continuing to work from within the system to change it, maintaining his connections there, and promoting revolution on the outside is the path for him to be most effective. It is his style and his long practice and I think he's being true to who he is and not what we want him to be. That's leadership. It may go against everything most of us consider righteous but I doubt he cares about much of anything other than doing all he can for people in need. He's going to eat massive quantities of shit from his formerly faithful followers, the Clinton campaign, and from the DNC over this decision. If there's one guy who will eat a shit sandwich while smiling because it helps people it's Bernie. That's sacrifice, that's leadership at it's best. I for one have no problem throwing bread his way if it looks like I'm reading this right.

I fear we are in a minority although I've never been someone who worried about having ideas and positions that run counter to conventional or popular thinking. This time is no different.

There are several things that I find discomforting though. I'm watching people abandon the guy who turned this election on it's head for progressives. Without Bernie, progressives would have been out in the cold from the time HRC announced her candidacy. None of us would have tons of proof of the DNC and Clinton's corruption. It would all be CT or right wing talking points. Now they're abandoning him in droves because they disagree with him doing what he said he would do from the start. Anyone who has the slightest political sense should have listened and prepared themselves for the eventuality, no, probability of him losing. I'll give them a pass on not expecting him to stay true to his word. There are almost no modern day examples of such a thing in politics. Instead, many can only see deceit, abandonment, and lies. Every action is confirmation that Bernie is not one with them. They attach all sorts of sordid reasons for his treachery. He's captured by Clinton, he's looking to be rewarded by the Clintons in exchange for his loyalty, he was never against the 1%, and on and on. I'd not be all that concerned if it was people turning from Bernie but they are rejecting his political revolution for....what?

It's only a fucking disagreement about whether to continue to play an inside the DP game in parallel to continuing to attract new people into a movement based on progressive principles and issues. The real loss is former supporters turning away from the idea of his political revolution because they don't understand what he's doing or are too impatient to be bothered to see his play through the election.Another piece of this is people unable to tell the difference between a politician playing politics and one on the take. Politics is a game of relationships, connections, and networks. A good politician is one who can see the potential for an ally who otherwise is a bitter opponent. Like a good salesman a good politician is primarily interested in the sale. The product is ideas and policy leading to programs improving the lives of people. The hard part is avoiding being captured, corrupted, and throwing away rigorous honesty and integrity. Those latter two are forever gone once surrendered but once. I'm told Bernie has forfeited his. I don't see it. Bernie's sailed these waters his entire political life and has them intact except in the fear filled minds of some of his used to be followers. I'll change my mind when I see his net worth begin climbing or him giving overpaid speeches to Goldman Sachs and Haliburton or claiming close friendship with mentor Henry Fucking Kissinger.

Despite it all I don't hold hard feelings or a grudge against any who have turned their backs on Bernie. We all need each other. We are all in this together and cannot afford the loss of a single ally if there is to be any chance of wrestling power from the 1% to improve the lives of the millions they've feasted on for far too long.

I was riveted by his speech last night; it was a very emotional moment for me.

I doubt I'll ever encounter any politician with the qualities Bernie has shown throughout his career and during his Presidential campaign. It is extremely painful to see how debased the Democratic Party has become, and although I understand why Bernie is urging citizens to vote for the Dems (and Hillary), I have chosen not to join in that endeavor.

It's a gut feeling very similar to the feeling I have when listening to Bernie, which is quite a paradox but there you are.

I don't believe Hillary can be pushed to do the right thing. I believe she will lead us into even more war than we already have, and the influence peddling will become even worse.

There was a point in the campaign where I believe he was all in and ready to go the distance.

Then, after NY something happened. To him. To the campaign.

Maybe it was just the lopsided 'loss' (NY results had the greatest discrepancy with exit poll data of any state). Or maybe it was something even more sinister, or both, but whatever it was, the fire wasn't there in quite the same way after that.

But I don't blame Bernie for that.

I didn't like the fawning tone of Bernie's speech, but I understand why he's done this. He is living up to promises he made back when he started his campaign, and I can't tear him down because he chooses to uphold his integrity.

Jill Stein made an interesting comment to Jimmy Dore yesterday (paraphrasing): Bernie may have fathered the movement, but now it's grown up and can act on its own. Video in the comments

I tend to agree. Bernie himself said that this campaign wasn't about him, but about starting the movement. There are but a few more things he can do to advance it on the stage of Philadelphia, but he then has to think about what will happen as he returns to his Senate seat. He can do us no good if the Democrats take away his committee assignments and isolate him. He needs to be doing and saying what he now is, both the fulfil his promises and to maintain any effectiveness as a Senator. We don't have to like it, but which outcome would we prefer?

I just hope he doesn't accept the "honor" of nominating Hillary. That is a bridge too far.

FDR 9-23-33, "If we cannot do this one way, we will do it another way. But do it we will.

After all, you cannot expect to overthrow an oligarchic system like the one we seem to be firmly saddled with by running for President. Even in a heavily compromised semi/pseudo-democracy like ours, those kinds of things take many years and must be done from the bottom up, with the working involvement of very large numbers of very well-organized people.

But then here we are a year later. I'm still skeptical, and for the same reasons, though millions have cast votes for Bernie Sanders, and many thousands have actively worked and organized for a campaign that dared to point out how rotten and rigged the system is. To get this far, Sanders had to make use of the Democratic Party campaign infrastructure, and to do that he had to promise to support the eventual nominee, whoever that might be. Well, now we have Her Royal Inevitableness, and Bernie has kept his promise whether we like it or not. And through all that he's also managed to stay on message, refusing to be drawn off into useless personality clashes and silly, distracting side issues like Clinton's email server.

So I've had to modify my skepticism. Instead of treating this as yet another case of putting the cart before the horse, we need to acknowledge all those people who have become energized and involved, because that is where you can start a movement, not where it has to end. It's now up to the Sanders campaign, as maybe the biggest and best organized group on the left, to re-focus on creating a permanent grassroots infrastructure that can grow that movement from the bottom up. Of course this means turning away from the mass hypnosis of the Great Electoral Spectacle, but there I go being skeptical again...
