My thoughts on all the outrage we feel right now

Strange how life treats us, isn't it? I've been awake since 5 am this morning. Shortly thereafter more thunderstorms hit. Seems like a metaphor for this week at the DNC in Philly.

I caught up with all the news I missed the last several days and the anger and disdain for the Democratic Party and their rigged election "process" is well deserved and righteous. But as the protagonist in one of my favorite films, Ikiru, Mr. Watanabe, a man battling with a corrupt beurocratic system to turn a a toxic sewer filled area in a poor section of Tokyo into a children's park, responded to a question from a subordinate as to why he didn't hate those who opposed him at every turn and openly displayed their contempt, "I don't have that kind of time."

My point is that, much as I would like to feed my inner outrage, what has come out in the recent wikileaks disclosures is nothing new to anyone who has been paying attention. It feels good to release that anger at our sham democracy, I get that. But if there is one thing I have learned so far this week it is that anger isn't conducive, in and of itself, to getting things done. And as discouraged and upset as so many of us are, we don't have time to focus solely on our outrage.

We have a movement to build and to strengthen and make powerful, and it will take more than a village to reach that goal. It will take all of us in so many ways, national and local, to do the hard work needed to sustain what erupted this election season because one 74 year old Democraric socialist decided to run for President. It is going to take endurance and commitment in the face of disappointment after disappointment if we hope to bring about real change.

Yes we have changed the conversation, but our rotten corrupt pay to play system still holds the keys to the car, and they are bent on driving us off a cliff. We don't have time for negative emotuins, neither anger or despair, because we have work to do my brothers and sisters, hard work in every town, city and local community in our country to move from changing the conversation to changing the power structure of our plutocracy. Because we are running out of time to a create system that works for us and not the "greed is good" crowd.

So, consider doing whatever you can to be a part of the solution, because we have had the answers for a long time, we just haven't exerted ourselves collectively to use the power we have to force the politicians to pay attention to us, to listen to us, and yes, to fear us. Because they should fear us, for we have unleashed a powerful force this year. Now we need to grow it, rather than let it die on the vine.

So, when you have feed your outrage beast enough, turn that passion into working to build coalitions with others who also want to change this system of political corruption and economic royalists that now governs our country. There are many places to start. In the coming weeks I am going to do my best to bring attention to some do the many groups that need your help from Move to Amand to Flush the TPP to 35o.org. But also remember that you can act locally in your own community. Run for office, for one thing, even if it is an election for dog catcher. Create meet ups of like minded people to come together to spread the word, such as The People's Revolution intends to do.

But however you choose to act, make it happen. Don't say you will try. There is no try, there is only doing or not doing. I am in the doing camp now. If you are not already, then join us. The organizations are in place now ready to put you to work. All you need to DO is place that call and get in this fight for our future, indeed this fight for our lives. Make 2016 the year that in the future people look back at as the turning point. Don't let that spirit and energy dissipate.

Because, we don't have time for that. Not one minute.

Reading about the fence, thinking about how we could decorate it.

Not locks, ala Paris. How about black ribbons of mourning? Needs to be something very difficult to remove. Bright colors would attract more attention especially if we could reach the top - 8 feet of rope, ribbons, colored wool...some draped making it easier to hang posters.

Of course Build Bridges not Fences...Never $hrillary....Bernie or Bust....Vote Your Conscience...

@Steven Anger can be a waste, but it is also a motivator. Squeaky wheels have alo brought down many an immovable object. With all due respect, it is the low-key, passive types that can be such a downer.

It would be great to hear the democrats shouting "Lock Her Up" when Hillary Clinton steps on stage.

That would be the ultimate irony.

The DNC has promoted unity alright. I'm now prepared to vote against Clinton. Previously, I had been leaning no vote for the top spot, now, they have made me 'angry' (I know it's not productive) enough to vote for the orange monster. If Hillary wins the election, nothing will change--the Democratic party will remain corrupted. Fuck them, they built this.

Without 'outrage voters', psychopathic Trump has a fraction of the voting population crazy enough to vote for him.

Without Bernie supporters/'outrage voters', the sane, non-corporate Greens have a fraction of the vote.

Why are people voting for evil, when they could vote for the common good?

The same type of pathological Greeds support the Republicans as have taken over the Dems - why support and sustain them and their destructive agenda, rather than a party which will work toward sustaining life on the planet and the concept of democracy?

The two-party trade-off system scam has to end...

Trump got criticized for too much doom and gloom in his convention speech. He harped on the largely nonexistent "problems" of rIsing crime, terrorism, and immigration. And he is up six points in the polls.

What about REAL problems? Another recession is coming sooner rather than later. Will there be another financial sector crash? Are they going to give Wall Street another bailout at our expense? Is the American middle class headed for extinction? Nobody wanted to mention climate change at the RNC. Will the DNC be any different?

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

The coup d'etat has happened.

We are seeing various threads of it playing out right now with exhibit A the "democratic" "party"

According to this excellent panel at NN16, TPP can still be stopped.

TPP will lock in the coup even more and be harder to change, so time to push issues like this.

Getting people angry is but another way to keep people away from the polls so we have to keep up the fight

Here is the video of the panel

TPP: Trade “Trump-ing” the Election

two dem heroes at NN16 were Sen from OR Jeff Merkley and Rep from MI Ralph Ellison

(Aside, listening to an interview on private prisoner prisoner transport - a woman who spent 2 weeks on a prisoner transport van from So. CA to Alabama because she didn't return a rental car on time. No warrant. No bathroom facilities. I didn't realize that this was happening. With real criminals and only stopped a couple of days. Another horror story going on here in US. A NYT reporter was in on the call. Van cross lines. Not in custody of where started or where is going. Atty general will look into it she told a legislator. Woman who was on the van -- keeps her in fear, glad that the story comes out,

Here is the link to an article on this issue

Inside the Deadly World of Private Prisoner Transport Tens of thousands of people every year are packed into vans run by for-profit companies with almost no oversight.

..... )

I apologize for the interrupt. As the empire collapses, more and more crimes come out.

In any case, Jeff and Keith were upbeat. They were on important panels that used the word "coup", one on TPP and the other on monopolies. Zephyr Teachout was also on that panel. But will their hopeful work and hopeful talk be realized?

They made a very important point that the TPP can be beat and this is something we need to make sure happens. Need a sustained effort on this . The dems seem to be willing to loose an election on this issue to deliver the bacon to the oligarchs.

Here is an article from today about the hope at NN16 from the Bernie supporters in the dem party, and not sure how it will turn out

Disorder on the Democratic Left The Tim Kaine pick and WikiLeaks revelations have riled up the Bernie brigade on the eve of Hillary Clinton’s coronation.

This is by David Dayen and his book just out is on another part of the coup, the criminal behavior of the banks, prosecutors, etc. in the mortgage disaster - disaster for people, not for the banks and the oligarchs who protect them.

I am affected less by anger, but more by fear. We need green leaders (from every party) to be elected before the environmental shit hits the fan. Thanks for bringing up geo-engineering - a great source of additional profits for many polluters, having an army of PR personnel at the ready to to jeer 'conspiracy theorists' at those bringing this to public attention. A kindergarten tactic which, regrettably, works - and had worked for far too long in many cases - on a lot of us, (myself included,) to the point where obvious evidence is laughingly dismissed or redirected to 'other causes' in a long-running polluting industry strategy.

The various issues in climate change theory which do not fit into the carbon/fossil-fuel-only model are accounted for by including the lucrative and deadly 'geo-engineering' craze which is rapidly killing the planet right over, under and in front of our very noses.

The acceptance of science and reality are life and death matters and we can no longer tolerate or overlook those who seek their short-term increases in power and profit at the cost of literally everything else.

This is a berniesanders.com press release:

"BURLINGTON, Vt. – In an opening night address on Monday at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will make it clear that Hillary Clinton is by far superior to Donald Trump on every major issue from economics and health care to education and the environment.

"Sanders will stress that the most progressive platform in Democratic Party history includes agreements he reached with Clinton to dramatically expand health care access and to make public colleges tuition-free for students from families with annual incomes up to $125,000 a year.

"In his remarks, Sanders also plans to rip into Trump for siding with the Koch brothers and echoing fossil fuel industry claims that climate change is a hoax despite the virtually-unanimous scientific consensus that the warming planet is causing devastating harm.

"Sanders also will send a message to the convention and to the 13 million voters who supported him that they have begun a political revolution to transform America and that the revolution – Our Revolution – continues. 'Together,' he will say, 'we continue the fight to create a government which represents all of us, and not just the 1 percent – a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice.'”

There. You've been warned. Sigh.

Life is strong. I'm weak, but Life is strong.

Ummmmm, did you read that? Bernie will say that she's 'far superior to Trump', he having no political experience (rather than Hillary's experience of callously doing disastrous things whether without understanding the situations and incidentally profiting a lot or because she did understand that she'd profit a lot by callously doing disastrous things,) and doing stream-of consciousness fascist rants to (also) gain the Presidency for his own ends/those of the .001%.

... "Sanders will stress that the most progressive platform in Democratic Party history includes agreements he reached with Clinton to dramatically expand health care access and to make public colleges tuition-free for students from families with annual incomes up to $125,000 a year.

(Reminding everyone that ONLY due to being publicly pushed by Bernie she's promised to do a few inadequate things which she actually likely has no intention of doing anyway because she's not concerned with the people/democracy/America but with the ever-increasing profits and power which her corporate /billionaire owners will share some fractional percentage of with her. At least while she's still useful/necessary for the corporate coup and the claimed 'legitimacy' of any such brokered hostile take-over of democracies around the world.)

"In his remarks, Sanders also plans to rip into Trump for siding with the Koch brothers and echoing fossil fuel industry claims that climate change is a hoax despite the virtually-unanimous scientific consensus that the warming planet is causing devastating harm.

(Reminding everyone that fracking-promoting, fossil-fuel employee Hillary Clinton also plans devastating planetary harm-for-.01%-profit and power. To repeat: because she's not concerned with the people/democracy/America but with the ever-increasing profits and power which her corporate /billionaire owners will share some fractional percentage of with her. At least while she's still useful/necessary for the corporate coup and the claimed 'legitimacy' of any such brokered hostile take-over of democracies around the world.)

Self-explanatory, I would have thought.

The Clinton/corporate faction will be spitting nails at this deft maneuver around an impossible situation - but it's always a mistake to underestimate Bernie Sanders.

I wonder how this outrage compares to the outrage people felt as Nixon's tapes proved his lies. I was too young at the time to know but this seems like a greater threat to our Country. I also will be pushing myself to be active in ways I've never been before to bring democracy and freedom to our country.

I was in college at the time of Watergate. My recollection is that the American public was more stunned and shocked than angry about Watergate.

Our elders at the time (Greatest Generation and their parents) tended to respect and defer to authority figures. Watergate was a major blow to their worldview, to their innate sense of trust in those leading us.

Watergate really had an effect on the national psyche. I have to believe that it (along with the assassinations of JFK, MLK, and others during the '60s) contributed to the problems we've had in dealing with the political shenanigans of the past 40 years, sitting on our thumbs in a stupor while the neocons and neolibs destroyed the middle class and dismantled democracy. It's as though the American public went into a walking coma in the late 1970s. It feels to me like a form of PTSD that We the People are collectively suffering.

(I'm using the collective "we" in the paragraph above to denote the US populace in general. I know that some of us did not go to sleep back then, but in my experience, those of us who were even somewhat awake were marginalized and found it hard to get traction. Until now, with Bernie and the Millennials.)
