God Bless the Grass
God Bless the Grass
Words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1964 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1992.
She wrote it after reading Mark Lane’s comments about the John F. Kennedy assassination.
God bless the grass that grows thru the crack.
They roll the concrete over it to try and keep it back.
The concrete gets tired of what it has to do,
It breaks and it buckles and the grass grows thru,
And God bless the grass.
God bless the truth that fights toward the sun,
They roll the lies over it and think that it is done.
It moves through the ground and reaches for the air,
And after a while it is growing everywhere,
And God bless the grass.
God bless the grass that grows through cement.
It's green and it's tender and it's easily bent.
But after a while it lifts up its head,
For the grass is living and the stone is dead,
And God bless the grass.
God bless the grass that's gentle and low,
Its roots they are deep and its will is to grow.
And God bless the truth, the friend of the poor,
And the wild grass growing at the poor man's door,
And God bless the grass.

The Pete Seeger album
was my very first album I ever had as a kid. I still have it. This song and Preserven el Parque Elysian, and 70 Miles probably were formative to who I am today. Somehow it's very appropriate that Pete's voice is still representing us, the 99%.
Think off-center.

I didn't hear this song till I was older, then I fell in love
My first encounter with this song was at a UU church, and we sang it at a Sunday service. I just found it to be so incredibly beautiful.
I never read The Velveteen Rabbit until much later in life either. Another amazing classic.
While composing this article, I happened to let YouTube do it's thing and play the "next" videos that it wanted to. So I was listening to a number of Pete Seeger's songs, all so touching and wonderful. Today, this very day, feels like the 60's to me. Some of us are hippies who want Peace and Love. And others in the world are "pragmatic", lol. Fuck that shit.

Got to see Arlo last week at the Fla Folk Fest. He's still lots of fun.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
That was lovely, thank you for sharing!

I have this album!
It's my late father's, it's one of many I grew up listening to. You've inspired me to put it on the turntable. Thanks!
It's nice to be reminded of great music from time to time, eh?
60's music - so many classics.
