There will always be a worse Republican

Ever since Eisenhower wandered off into the sunset [he was also courted by the Democrats to be their candidate] this has been the case. Ever since McCarthy sprung on the scene the crazy wing has been slowly taking over the fear and loathing mantle and getting wackier with each passing day, Trump is the logical conclusion.

So yes, when Democrats say it's Hillary or the bonkers brigade they are correct, but they also ignore the fact that the Democratic Party has rushed hell for leather into the political space they have left vacant, the centre right. I can name a number of people [my parents included during the Reagan years] that fled the Republican Party and find Hillary to be easily acceptable, bear in mind also their fundamental political beliefs have not changed one iota, funny both had very left wing parents, I got my politics from them.

There is little room left on the Right between the establishment Republicans and the Fascists/KKK.

The Democrats attempt to appease the left with the now famous saying "but, the other side is worse" and then when we say "hold on, wait" they go off on a tirade that we want the other side to win and we are no better then Republicans anyway. The only thing preventing the Democratic Party going full blown East Coast Republican Party is that they seem to want our votes for some reason.

To those who are celebrating the Hillary/DNC "victory" well done and you will get exactly what you deserve, but do not count on me and many others supporting you in this and don't come back and whine about it later on either. This is the easiest campaign ever for the Democrats to win with no exceptions, well maybe one, if Trump implodes further he might be gone before the Republican convention and then they put up a Chicken [feathered variety] to run instead of him.

I regard the Democratic Party as I regard East Cost Republicans, yes we agree on a few essential programs, but hell if I am joining your party because of where we fundamentally disagree. We used to have more common ground, but those days are long gone, wars, greed and revolving doors have seen to that.

There is always going to be a worse Republican, well done Democrats for filling the void, never forget however, you left us and not the other way around. Time for a new Party, working with the Greens on this may well be the way forward.

The politics of fear have all but run their course, it is time [long past] for a courageous approach.

There will always be a worse Republican ~ Orwellian ain't it?

This is why Trump & Bernie got big: How neoliberalism broke the American working class

It seems as though, if New Democrats like Bill Clinton want to know who to blame for Trump populism, they should look in the mirror. In retrospect, isn’t what we’re seeing on the right in some ways the result of Democrats abandoning white workers on economic issues and appealing to them on unsavory social issues like welfare “reform” and crime?

The New Democrats did try to woo on the social issues you mention, welfare reform and crime, not jobs. A good example is the transformation of West Virginia, which used to be a reliably Democratic state. Clinton refused to help the steel industry, in the wake of a flood of dumped steel imports from Asia in the late 1990s. After the financial crisis in the wake of 1997 and 1998 there, the Clinton administration concluded that the only way the big banks would be repaid was from exported manufacturing items, helped by subsidies and currency devaluation. Here is where the rise of finance hurt domestic manufacturing. As a result, West Virginia from 2000 to the present was usually in the GOP column. I think much of it was white working class nonvoting as much as GOP voting. The effect was the same.

I had not thought about the reinforcing of prejudices, but you are right. The New Democratic reinforcement of the notion of welfare abuse and out-of-control crime certainly did normalize both. The recent tussle about Hillary’s use of the word “predator” is a good example. Getting back to Trump. I think he has a mixed constituency. But insofar as it is white working class, I suspect it is from nonvoters, not Republican voters.

I will probably vote green this cycle. The way the corporate media called it for Clinton on Monday, so that fewer people would show up on Tuesday was just disgusting. It probably did not swing California or New Jersey, but i'll bet it took away any doubt. They knew the early voting was in Clinton's favor, so they pulled that shit. If that doesn't tell you what Bernie was up against working within the Democratic party, I don't know what could.

progressivism can overwhelm the Clinton wing of the Democratic party, and we can take the part of Roosevelt back.

The Democrats were a huge part of creating the middle class in America, which is literally what caused us to become a superpower. We did it with big government programs, and families buying houses and cars. Our economy is terrible now because the middle class is dying, not because of "troublesome government regulations."

We have to take the party back.

If we cannot take the party back, then we either need to make another party that can take control, or ultimately the country will collapse. We need systemic change, and I suspect we are running out of time.

in creating those always worse Repugnants too. If not for the complete sell out of the Dem party, we might have people who vote on actual issues instead of race, gender, abortion, guns, etc, etc, etc. Neither party addresses the underlying economics and they never will.

And even Ike did some dirty warmongering down in SA too, so none of them were really ever "clean" as we are taught to think they were. Even Jimmy Carter sold out the unions, and did his bit for "free market" economics throughout the globe. WE have NO one to help us anymore out of that party and they use the fear of the Repugnant to victory every single time. Hell, maybe Billy Bob himself set up the damned Tea Party to scare hell out of us and have us vote Dem. I would put NOTHING past any of them anymore!

that the exact same phenomenon occurs in the Republican Party. You can right now turn on hate radio, or subject yourself to the ululations of righty pundits and officeholders, and there find people saying, to those among the party faithful who are balking at The Hairball, "but the Mad Bomber is so much worse! worse! worse!" It has always been so. They preached the same fevered sermon four years ago for Romney, four years before that for McCain, before that for George II, and so on, ad infinitum, on into the mists of the past.

That's how they roped people in for the Eisenhower you mention, who was perceived by many as not sufficiently red-blooded to be a true Republican. Of course, as it developed, he proved himself the best friend the MIC has ever had. (Do not be deceived by his farewell address, the work of a speechwriter who had been sidelined during the entirety of Eisenhower's two terms, since his work on the first inaugural address. Look instead at his record.)

Occasionally there is some modest breakout, as with Debs, the Wallaces (Henry and George), Perot, Thurmond's Dixiecrats, La Follette, Theodore Roosevelt's Bull Moose tantrum, etc. But not often. This year could have been quite interesting, if The Hairball had been frozen out by the Republicans, and instead ran as an independent (or if the Republicans actually followed through with their anti-Hairball candidate), and if Sanders too had run independently. But apparently that's not going to happen.

Initially this was supposed to be the most stupid and boring presidential election ever, pitting two dynastic royal familes against one another (Bush v. Clinton), like something out of the 15th Century. Instead, I guess, it's going to be more like Cromwell vs. the Stuarts. Also titanically stupid. But somewhat less boring.

"Army Test Raises Accusations
Data On 1953 Minneapolis Experiment Is Demanded"
June 15, 1994|By Rogers Worthington, Tribune Staff Writer.
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1994-06-15/news/9406150171_1_zinc-cad...

Three Minnesota women, who in 1953 attended an elementary school that Minneapolis news reports place in the test area, stepped forward recently to detail a pattern of sterility, miscarriages and birth defects they say they believe resulted from their exposure.

Carol Thomas, one of the women, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune last week that she recalled students being tested at school under special lights to determine if the fluorescent chemicals were on their shoes or bodies.

Thomas said she believes her exposure played a role in her giving birth years later to one child with Down's syndrome, another who is severely retarded, and a third who has a severe learning disability.

"Our lives have been turned into a horror story," Thomas told the newspaper. She said many of her classmates at the former Clinton elementary school in South Minneapolis have had other childbearing problems.

The effects seem to have been most harmful to boys born to woman and girls who lived close to the school. There is much more that I could say about that including possible affects on my own son and the one of the sons of my cousin (we lived with by paternal aunt's family.) But we will never know. Wellstone wanted to get to the bottom this experiment conducted on a poor neighborhood. But Wellstone is gone and we never did get any answers.

In all of these years Democrats could have investigated if they had wanted to. And who knows what experiments are being conducted on us now-a-days by the drone-war President who doesn't seem much upset by the bombing of hospitals. Civilians, esp civilains in poor neighbors or poor countries are of little concern to Elite of both parties.

Further on the article says:

More than 100 biological warfare simulation tests were conducted by the Army in urban and rural areas between 1952 and 1969. Some used zinc cadmium sulfide. Others used either bacillus globigii, which can be cultured from hay, dust, milk and water, and which the Army considered harmless, or serratia marcescens, a common baccilus found in water, food and sewage.

Serratia marcescens had by 1969 been found to be potentially dangerous to humans in large doses.

Note: remember who became President in 1961?

God bless Bernie Sanders for picking up the Occupy football and shining a bright light on the Democratic cockroaches.

I am currently Going Green with Jill Stein and looking forward to the people's summit and other alternative movements.

The biggest obstacle I see is the issue fragmentation that scattered Occupy's focus. It's gonna be like herding cats.

Some Berniacs will stay to try and reform the Democratic Party. Godspeed, but that won't be me. Many will Go Green and many will insist on a New Progressive Party.

Autonamous action will rule the day while we all scatter in different directions. The chances of all Berniacs gelling around a new unified banner are slim, but the battle is far from over.

Actually, the battle never will be over. I'm hopeful that caucus99% will be one of the sources to hash out new battle plans.

There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.

It's always about THIS election and preserving what little we have from the big bad Republicans, while the country moves further and further to the right. Conservatives have been playing the long game for more than 40 years, while liberals have been so afraid of their own shadow that they've settled for whatever they can get by playing defense. The party leadership has exploited the deep insecurities of the partisan voters that want to win with any candidate and by any means necessary.

If you're not willing to take risks in order to stand for what you believe in, you will always end up losing in the long term.

If anything, I think that Obama's presidency has been very illuminating for many of the younger Democratic faithful, in that it has shown that even when Democrats control the White House and the Congress, they still can't (or don't want to) get anything done. Thank god Bernie showed up to expose the party's shell game for all to see.

Did the Republicans move to the right right and drag the Democrats with them? Or did the Democrats move right and push the Republicans further? Conventional wisdom says it's the former, but I'm not so sure. Perhaps the Republicans started it, but once Bill Clinton took the reigns and started using conservative rhetoric as his own, where was the right wing party supposed to go? It's not like they could leapfrog the Democrats, Reagan had already convinced the base that the word "liberal" was something evil. The only place to go to differentiate themselves from the "liberals" (who were actually now conservatives) was even further to the right.

Honestly, the whole thing is sad and mind boggling. I'm convinced that most individuals are good people, but politics is a team sport and you've got to support the team no matter what. Party over policy.
