God...in Pencil

A good Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to us all.  (a reprise from Oct. 21, 2011)

When I listen to Martin Luther King, Jr. speak, I can believe in God. There may be other times I have, but I can’t remember them specifically. In discussions about belief or not, I’ve heard people say that their personal stories have been determinant. A lot of them include hitting some emotional or spiritual bottom, and hearing a message from God, then being reborn in some state that exemplifies grace, along with which comes both a knowledge of, and a belief in, God; sort of a personal relationship.

I don’t know this place; this sort of state. Throughout the many dark nights of the soul I’ve experienced, I’ve  never found that comfort or profound communication they describe. And yet I like to say prayers. The time spent in gratitude for my life, or mindful intentionality about my place and behavior in the universe can be nourishing, and requires no belief. It’s more an acknowledgement that it feels good to be part of something larger, to be connected, even if it’s just to all the best thought-energy sailing around in my local branch of the universe. You know; a hippie version of spirituality. What I mean to say is: Whether or not I believe in God isn’t a problem for me.

The USofA: a Land of Martyrs

Let's not try to even imagine, let alone list them all, but start with JFK, MLK, RFK, and Malcolm. No real ancient history there, but merely the tip of the iceberg.

Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, Fred Hampton, Mark Clark, and Bobby Hutton.

Sacco, Vanzetti and all who died in the MOVE house.

But these are all notorious cases and named individuals.

What about all of the labor leaders, labor organizers and striking laborers.

Socialist Martin Luther King's "Beyond Vietnam" Speech Indicted American Imperialism, Racism, Materialism and Capitalism. One Year Later To The Day, He'd Be Killed. The FBI Killed Him 50 Years Ago Today.

Just did a quick look to see if there's anything on King here on this momentous day.

The Unfulfilled Dream

"WE MUST SEE NOW THAT THE EVILS OF RACISM, ECONOMIC
EXPLOITATION AND MILITARISM ARE ALL TIED TOGETHER...YOU CAN’T
REALLY GET RID OF ONE WITHOUT GETTING RID OF THE OTHERS...THE
WHOLE STRUCTURE OF AMERICAN LIFE MUST BE CHANGED."

—The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., May 1967

I never met Martin Luther King, Jr. I was only 14 when he was murdered (perhaps by our own government). However, I later worked with many people who were his friends...so called foot soldiers of the movement. So although we never met, he influenced me. I think he influenced our nation, helping us reach for a higher morality and better society. He was a human, and like us all continued to grow and evolve throughout his life. I think he was really maturing and carrying the movement forward when he began the poor people's campaign. Today I want to look at the dream which has yet to be realized, and the new effort to revive the poor people's campaign.
