Gardening

Historical methods vs new technology which is better. Old methods are not necessarily better or worse than modern technology, only different. I tend to explore older methods when working on resilience projects and evaluate them with modern methods. In times of disruptions due to climate, economy or wars the supply lines we use today may not be available.

Resilience: Best Garden Harvest Practices

Resilience1_0.jpg
Lovie and I just got in from picking beans and tomatoes in our backyard garden. We're pickling the beans and the tomatoes are going to their usual fates: grape tomatoes into our mouths by the handful and in salads, the medium-size tomatoes to salsas and the food dryer. I trust your gardening has been a tasty success so far. We had fun back in the spring with gardening topics. This time I'd like to talk about harvesting. Next week more on post-harvesting and so on. Resilience: A Comprehensive Mosquito Strategy For Your Garden

Resilience1.jpg
Heading into mid-May here in SE Ontario, we're starting to see the bugs come out. Including the $#@@$% Asian ladybug brought in by Quebec farmers for pest control. They quickly ate all the bugs, then all the native ladybugs, and now infest Quebec and SE Ontario, heading steadily west. The effing Asian ladybugs will probably meet the effing pine beetles chewing their way east from BC, somewhere in Saskatchewan. My money is on the ladybugs giving the pine beetle whatfor. Anyway, mosquitoes, don't get sidetracked, G!

Well, they'll arrive pretty soon too. I've collected a bunch of mosquito control ideas over the years and some may help you. All ideas free of charge with a money-back guarantee if'n they don't work. More below.

Resilience: What's Your Favourite Salad Greens To Grow?

Resilience1.jpg
Hello, my resilient friends. I'm late this year...even for Canada, with organizing our seed plantings. Our highly efficient seed organizing system - ahem, the cardboard box on top of a bookcase with a mess of seed packets - and I are spending the weekend together :=) So I thought we would have a bit of fun comparing notes on favourite salad greens. I'll let you know what our family is doing, and throw in some description from our seed provider and other resources. I would like to know what works for you with salad greens: seeds, planting, seedlings, anything that you find that works for you is welcome. More below.

OT - Gardening in the times of severe climate change

I am a gardener. A life long organic gardener who's goal has always been to grow organic food and create aesthetic landscaping that is sustainable, native, and promotes the general welfare of the planet. I'm also an urban gardener who's plot of land is a small 100x50 including a big 1914 old house. I have gardened and developed this small plot for 25 years. My veggie garden is a raised bed that measures 150 square feet. This year it looks like the dust bowl.

Good morning, 99percenters! How's it going in your neighborhood today so far? Hope all is well with everyone.

It's a rainy Memorial Day weekend here. I'm preoccupied with the weather because there are flowers to plant! We've had rain every day for at least 2-1/2 weeks. Maybe more; I've lost track. And, the forecast doesn't look hopeful. I try to appreciate it because other areas such as California would love to have it. But, enough already.
