Good morning 99percenters!

Ever stand in the grocery store and wonder whether the fish you’re considering buying is sustainable? The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a web site, Seafood Watch, that can advise you on which seafood to buy or avoid and help you select items that are fished or farmed in ways that have less impact on the environment.

The site is easy to navigate and there is an app available for your phone so you actually check it while standing in front of the seafood counter. Or, if you’re more of a luddite there’s a downloadable PDF for each state that you can slip into a pocket, or purse.

This is an open thread, so tell us what’s on your mind today. Anyone watching some hoops?

It's more costly and takes longer than to construct one. In Germany they start to deconstruct and disassemble nuclear power plants. They have miscalculating how difficult that is, how much it costs and how long it takes. Many in the population, who are generally in support to get away from nuclear power, start to get nervous, especially they are afraid what kind of radiation will be released during the disassembly process. There is a long article in our weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" (a good one, BTW). Too long for me to even start to translate.

So, I guess here in the US, where nobody even started thinking about that, you will have to live with your nuclear power plant ruins for some centuries. They look really nice in the landscape, don't they?

Oh well, smart technology is so brain-dead.

I'm not a pro sports fan. Is this the famous March Madness season, games? Eric is a major baseball fan (The Angels) so I do follow that pro sport vicariously.

Interesting subject for the open thread as yesterday I got in a discussion with a butcher at Whole Paycheck about their 'sustainable' farmed Atlantic Salmon which he was touting to some one in front of me. I go for both sustainability and healthy. I know that that ocean caught fish are full of mercury etc but I usually buy line caught wild Alaskan salmon and halibut when buying fish. The butcher told me that wild Coho salmon (my favorite) from Alaska or the PNW in fact all ocean caught fish, are 80% plastic.

When I asked him about the water and the feed for these farmed fish I got no information instead he started with the scare tactics of eating ocean fish. The he said that the Atlantic farmed salmon he was selling was such an alarming pink color because they had to put some chemical in the water otherwise the flesh would not be salmon colored. They raise them in tanks filled with filtered seawater. That did it for me. Nothing sounded good about this farmed fish other then it was sustainable as far as not depleting the ocean/river fish. I bought a half of a pound of line caught wild halibut a expensive treat.

I'm taking it easy today as I have been spring cleaning for the last week as well as working in the yard and working for $.
The news is just a real drag these days. Everyone seems to hate each other and everyone is posed to go to war with everybody else. Strange days Momma. A Kingston Trio song from my childhood has been running through my mind. My Dad had an extensive folk record collection including every Kingston Trio album ever made. Their merry minuet....
