Brain Damage Like An American
In these days in 2001 winger behemoth Clear Channel was circulating a memo identifying Songs That Have Become Wrong, that should no longer be played on the radio, because those airplanes did not follow their flight path there on September 11.
You can just picture these people, scraping away at the frontal lobe with a hatpin, until they’ve got the higher brain functioning sufficiently reduced, to where this seems like a good idea.
Like let’s look at what songs of John Mellencamp got thrown in the dungeon: “Crumblin’ Down,” “Paper In Fire.”
You can clearly hear, the Clear Channel “brain” trust:
“Okay. Obviously nothing can be crumbling down, nor can any shits be burning. All that, is over.”
Which is why “I’m On Fire,” “Fire And Rain,” “Burning Down The House,” “Down,” “Shot Down In Flames,” “Down In A Hole,” “I Feel The Earth Move,” “Bound For The Floor,” “I’m Goin’ Down,” “Crash and Burn,” “Smokin’,” “Burnin’ For You,” “Fire,” “Great Balls Of Fire,” and “Fire Woman,” all went to the guillotine.
Some of these you can see how they became verboten simply by the title: “Jump,” “Jumper,” “When You’re Falling,” “Falling For The First Time,” “Free Fallin’,” “In The Air Tonight,” “Holy Diver,” “Learn To Fly” “Nowhere To Run,” “Left Behind,” “Duck and Run,” “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” “Last Kiss,” “She’s Not There,” “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” “When Will I See You Again.” “Have You Seen Her,” “Bodies,” “I Go To Pieces,” “Bits And Pieces,” “Chop Suey.”
But some passeth understanding. Like what’s with “Peace Train, “Imagine,” “Wonderful World”? Were they afraid if those were played, peace might break out?
And how about “America”? Did one or more among them harbor a great Hate for Neil Diamond, and figured they’d use this frenzy, to get him off the radio?
We know this list was assembled by racist motherfuckers, because “Walk Like An Egyptian” got on there. By this time it was suspected the hijackers were Islamic jihadists, so there must have been a clear channeling brainshower: “Egypt, that’s over there somewhere, right? Part of that whole melanin crew? Better shit the can on this one.” When it’s just a silliness where the writer “was inspired to create the song while on a ferry crossing the English Channel. When the vessel hit choppy water, passengers stepped carefully and moved their arms awkwardly while struggling to maintain their balance, and that reminded him of the depiction of human figures in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings. He wrote the words ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ in a notebook. Later, he looked back in the notebook and, composing the melody with a guitar, he put together an up-tempo song with lyrics about Egyptian hieroglyphs, the Nile River, crocodiles, desert sand, bazaars and hookah pipes and then segued into modern scenes of blonde waitresses, school children and police officers.”
Maybe somebody could link all these forbidden songs in a ditty called “Brain Damage Like An American.” Then, it could not get on the radio. It would be a new darkness.
