Saturday Open Thread - 9/5/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! Hope you are all in fine fettle this Saturday morn.

I have some good news. I have compared 6 to 8 grocery items purchased for 3 weeks, and have seen no rise in costs. In fact, jalapeno peppers lowered by 3 cents per lb. this week. So far, diesel price hikes have not passed on to shoppers to have goods delivered by the big trucks. The shelves are well stocked, although pricier items are no longer offered. It is subtle, but noticeable.

We made it through Eduourd easily, although the town 13 miles away flooded in numerous places. I shut down the office Wednesday and Thursday, just in case my secretary couldn't make it back home. I didn't miss any business. People were staying home. A creek a couple of miles away flooded and a bridge was impassable for a day, but I didn't have to use that road until today after it cleared.

I have kept a close watch on the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, which was declared a mistrial Friday morning. Seems I am not alone in looking at the ramifications. If this case is re-tried, the verdict reached will set the precedent for women's place in our society either way it goes. Next time, no cameras in the courtroom, and sequester the jury, IN ACCORDANCE WITH LAW, ok? Don't give a trial the appearance of a psy-op! OK?

Aaannnd, the lovebugs are almost gone. We don't see thousands of them swarming, and see a dozen or so per day. 6 weeks of bug hell is enough! I can see the sky after 6 weeks of black flying sex maniac bugs!

Last weekend, my secretary, her kids, and friends, toured a graveyard northwest of Houston, and came upon this big, fancy headstone with a big Zz on it's top. It was Dusty Hill's grave. I am still mourning the death of the drummer, Frank Beard. Beard was a kind man who went out of his way to help those in need of drug rehab support. I got a hug and hand shake that day I had him testify as a witness in a custody case, but regret I didn't get his autograph. I just have that memory.

And, finishing with a song that I have heard Gary P. Nunn sing several times in person, and excusing obf for turning down the volume on the Outlaw Country tune (not to be confused with country music) to just see the pictures, read the lyrics.

So, friends, this is an open thread, which means it invites comments on any info you think should be shared with your friends here. We have wars going on, horrid weather events, economic instability, etc... We need to keep each other informed, ok?

With that, let 'er rip!

Okay, okay, now I don't dislike the entire C&W genre. See below.

I have always loved this one, and have enormous respect for Mr. Nelson. Smile I know I mentioned a Best Of Patsy Cline CD my mother owned. I just don't like the redneck jingoistic noize like that Lee Greenwood USA headache all the FRighties play. So, there. LOL.
I am very glad you and JtC missed the flooding by Eduourd. I recall Houston getting swamped by Harvey a few years back. Have you seen some of the floods up north? Climate change for sure, but it's still bad. Anywho, that one you've linked is one of my faves by ZZ Top. That's really neat you got to meet one of them under normal circumstances. One of my very best friends (who unfortunately is no longer with us) would get on my case about rock and roll performers. She dated the lead singer of Molly Hatchett for a couple of years. She told me point-blank that some of these folk were among the nicest and most normal people around. I had to regroup somewhat mentally. Smile Hope you and JtC are continuing to do well and staying cool. You take care! Rec'd!!

Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.

@orlbucfan I had a client year ago who had a fling with Nelson. She said he was a "playah".
I am with you on the weirdo genre called country music that is overtly rw, patriotic, like it is a staged marketing ploy. The outlaws were no such thing. It is repulsive. Like, "country singer" Taylor Swift went rock and roll when she discovered that was where the money was.
I read recently that Garth Brooks was struggling in his effort to make his comeback from retirement. George Straight said he deserved his rejection since he betrayed the genre. Pretty funny stuff.
I haven't kept track of storms around the country, but have been reading about the wildfires that affect some of our members.
Well, I need to get around to reading some news, and sort of planning a fun meal for Labor Day, the day I won't be laboring at the office. Trump is bitching that laborers get too many paid holidays in this country, and that numerous holidays should be scrapped. Congress will get right on that when they reconvene after their 2 month paid vacation.
Have a great weekend, chica!

We're still in the heat wave, and it looks like another hot and dry week ahead.

I usually put something on the smoker for labor day, but decided to boil some shrimp and eat them cold this weekend. Have to get out early and then hold up in the AC during the heat of the day.

Trade day was fairly pleasant, but was starting to get hot when I left. Bought 4 more cabbage and 4 more broccoli plants to fill out the bed. So we'll just have one bed to tend into winter. Tomatoes have pretty much played out, but beans and peas are pretty constant, at least for a while longer. Still getting a few peppers, and we have all the sweet potatoes to dig toward the end of October.

Glad the deluge didn't hit you too hard. Sounds like retirement is on schedule.

Well, take care and thanks for the OT!

@Lookout @Lookout I don't know how you manage your gardening in this heat. Here, the temperature high today is 90f. Sounds decent, except the heat index is 110. In the shade, it only feels like 102f. Just walking slowly in the yard to spot ant bed just melted me. I toyed with the idea of dragging some fallen limbs to the burn pile, but I don't think I can handle it. The 10 day forecast shows much the same as today.
We will grill steaks tonight, not because it is cooler, but because the lovebugs are dwindling way down. For the last 6 weeks, we would have been grilling steaks with lovebug seasoning.
This morning, opposing counsel sent all the documents to finalize a divorce. My last family law case. No court appearance will be necessary. That leaves 5 probate cases. I can put 4 of them on the docket and appear in person for one last time. The 5th will be a Houston case, appearance via zoom. And, that's it. I will hire a crew and start hauling out office furniture next week, if there is no rain. Whereas, I thought I would be depressed. Instead, I am so damn glad to get out of the courtroom, away from hysterical, emotionally unstable clients, I am the happiest I have been in many years. The Mayor won't let me off the hook. He will pay me to review ordinances here and there. Enough to pay for a weekend away and some concert tickets. Gary P. Nunn is playing nearby at a venue only an hour and 15 minutes away.
Well, do your planting while the sun don't shine, friend! Enjoy the shrimp!

Happy day to survive TS deluge. Beautiful day here. Going to bring a
Lasagna to a friend in Mattapoisett and inspect a renovation project.
Some wine to lubricate the mental gears.
Good to get off the homestead. Traffic, not so much.
Thanks for the tunes. Jesus left Chicago is a favorite.

market but will drop a couple of quick comments.
1) The whole hormone argument - not touching the female aspect of the issue, but just thought, in response to the video, that I might argue that there is ample evidence that males have a propensity to lose it under the influence of certain hormones, not the least of which is testosterone, do goose-gander perhaps.

Google and others have changed maps to sillynames in response to trumptalk. That is in error as a matter of law and with respect to their need to provide correct information to the populace (as a whole). Trumptalk only applies to federal employees while on the job or acting in their official capacity. All others are not only free to use the real names for things, but have an obligation to do so because there is a need to use the normal almost universally recognized names for things instead of sillynames. Otherwise communication collapses. (and you look really stupid as well)

be well and have a good one

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

@enhydra lutris The male testosterone argument is now a "thing" going on in legal circles. In fact, it is already being tried out in England. What's good for the goose, blah blah blah...
Mr. Clancy just wants the jury to forgive Lindsay and move on. He doesn't want to re-hash the loss of his kids. I think more in terms of seeking justice for them. They were tortured to death. Where are the candlelight vigils for them?
If I had any interest in continuing work, it would be to exclusively represent men in child custody cases. Men for the win would be my billboard ad.
Now, about those sillynames, I did read that Trump named himself as the greatest US President of all times. And it is the f'cking Gulf of Mexico, and f'king Lake Ontario. And The Kennedy Center.
Hope you score some good buys at the market today!
