The US has joined the UK in adding the activist group Palestine Action to its list of designated terrorist organizations.
The UK proscribing Palestine Action was already arguably the most insane attack on free speech in recent western history, and now it’s the official position of the US government as well. Western support for Israel is poisoning our entire civilization.
The US has also made the unprecedented move of adding the Italian tech support collective Autistici/Inventati to its list of banned terrorist groups, not because they’ve been accused of any crimes, but explicitly because the company allows people to communicate with each other while staying “anonymous, untraceable, and beyond the reach of the law.” Americans are now strictly forbidden from any transactions with the banned company.
In this dystopia, mass surveillance is now so normalized that you can be designated a terrorist for helping people avoid being surveilled.
US designates Palestine Action activist group 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist'
The Trump administration has designated the UK activist group Palestine Action a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), as part of its efforts to go after what it described as "violent far-left terror networks". Wednesday's decision comes a year after the United Kingdom banned the group for damaging materials at weapons factories run by Elbit Systems. Elbit is a key provider of weapons to the Israeli military, which has for nearly three years carried out what the United Nations and Holocaust scholars have called a genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Palestine Action is now sanctioned in the US "for having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods and services to or in support of, an act of terrorism", the Department of the Treasury said in a statement. "The group’s actions include multiple high-profile instances of breaking into defense infrastructure and British military installations, and causing millions of dollars’ worth of damage to military equipment. Palestine Action has promoted its violent, criminal, and terrorist acts on social media, encouraging the use of similar tactics internationally, including within the United States and along the U.S.-Mexican border," it added.
Palestine Action was founded in 2020 after activists broke into and spray painted the London headquarters of Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms firm. Its network of activists have subsequently used tactics, including direct action, to target what it says are the “corporate enablers of the Israeli military-industrial complex". Actions have included breaking into offices and factories to spray-paint or damage equipment they say is used to commit war crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Elbit is the group's primary target, prompting multiple companies to sever ties with the defence contractor, and costing the company “billions” in lost contracts and divestments, according to Palestine Action. Barclays, which owned 16,000 shares in Elbit Systems, divested from the contractors in October, while the UK’s Ministry of Defence cancelled £280m worth of contracts with the company.
In July 2025, Palestine Action became proscribed under Section 3 of the UK's Terrorism Act 2000. That made it a criminal offence to be a member of the group "or to invite or recklessly express support for them".

White House Planning to Reactivate Civil War-Era Court to Accelerate Theft of Iranian Oil
The US Justice Department is preparing to reactivate prize courts to “adjudicate the disposition of [Iranian] captured vessels and cargo.”
Bloomberg reported speaking with an attorney working with the Justice Department on reviving the court. “Our national security interests may require the United States military to seize vessels or cargo supporting the enemy during military conflict,” Aaron Reitz, a Houston-based attorney, said in a statement. “If that happens, our federal courts must be ready to adjudicate the disposition of these captured vessels and cargo.” He described prize courts as an “ancient body of maritime law.”
Allison Luzwick, an attorney specializing in maritime law, said the DOJ may struggle to use the prize court to seize Iranian oil, as international law has significantly developed since it was last used. “This really is a historical area of law that is not tested in modern times.” She added, “Great strides have been made in international law and the law of war since the late 1800s, and all of that is going to come into play when we’re actually looking at proceedings involving a vessel that is potentially seized under Prize Act authority.”

Senate Resolution Will Demand Answers on Extremist Israeli Settler Violence Against US Citizens
A group of Senate Democrats on Thursday announced plans to introduce a privileged resolution requiring the Trump administration to give Congress more information about violence carried out by extremist settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Led by Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who caucuses with Democrats, the lawmakers are demanding the US Department of State produce reports detailing investigations into the killings of nine US citizens at the hands of Israeli settlers in recent years, as well as assessments on the human rights impact of Israeli policies such as the detention of Palestinian children.
Van Hollen said the resolution was necessary because the Trump administration has done nothing to hold the Israeli government accountable for the deaths of US citizens.
“As we’ve seen violence rise in the West Bank, American citizens have been killed time and again, and they have received no justice and no accountability,” said Van Hollen. “It’s past time we get answers on their deaths—and on the growing violent instability in the West Bank and the injustices facing Palestinian civilians on a daily basis.”
Sanders accused the Israeli government of offering “impunity” to settlers who carry out “horrific violence” against Palestinian civilians regularly.
“Enough is enough,” said Sanders. “The United States cannot keep bankrolling this violence and looking the other way—it’s time to end our complicity, once and for all.”
Kaine described the Israeli government’s “lack of response” to the settler violence as “unacceptable,” saying it “threatens the long-term safety and security of the entire region.”
“Friends need to listen to each other,” said Kaine, “and my colleagues and I have repeatedly urged Israeli leaders to take firmer action to curtail illegal settlements in the West Bank, prosecute violent settlers, and protect Palestinian residents as well as American citizens living in or visiting the West Bank.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who is also supporting the resolution, slammed the Trump White House’s complicity in the Israeli settler attacks, nothing that the administration “has even gone so far as to reverse sanctions against individuals connected to this pattern of horrific violence.”
“It’s long past time for the US government to stand up for human rights,” said Warren, “investigate this violence against Americans and Palestinian civilians, provide full information to Congress, and hold the perpetrators accountable.”
By introducing the measure as a privileged resolution, the Democrats can force a vote on it on the floor of the US Senate if the chamber’s Foreign Relations Committee fails to act on it within 10 days of its introduction.
Human rights organizations for months have been sounding the alarm about the situation in the West Bank, where Israeli settlers have routinely attacked Palestinians at their own homes.
An analysis published by the Carter Center last month found that “settler attacks are now the leading cause of Palestinian injuries in the West Bank,” as “more than 3,200 Palestinians have been displaced by settler attacks and home demolitions this year—double the daily rate of the previous three years.”

Big Oil Stocks Surged Due to Iran War—and New Filings Show How President Trump Cashed In
In a mandated filing with the Office of Government Ethics released Thursday, President Donald Trump was found to have made more than 1,000 stock transactions in June, including thousands of dollars invested in energy companies that were reaping record profits from the war Trump started with Iran.
Trump submitted financial disclosure forms to the OGE covering the second quarter of 2026, during which the Iran War continued, was paused for a ceasefire, and restarted again.
CBS News pointed to a “notable large transaction” on April 7, the day Trump declared a ceasefire with Iran after having threatened to destroy the country’s “entire civilization.” His investment accounts sold between $500,000 and $1 million of ExxonMobil stock that same day.
The filings were submitted days after Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) estimated that Trump’s oil and gas stocks have soared in value since before he began attacking Iran in February—an act that raised oil prices due to Iran’s retaliatory closing of the Strait of Hormuz. The holdings were estimated at $13 million to $46 million at the start of 2026 and $17 million to $61 million this month.
“President Trump saw his wealth go up by as much as $15.5 million just through stocks he owned in oil and gas companies at the end of 2025,” said the JEC Democrats. “These companies’ profits and stock values are rising because Trump’s reckless war in Iran has caused gas and oil prices to skyrocket.”
The JEC’s estimates were based on his holdings in 2025 and did not account for the trades he continued to make as the war dragged on.
“Trump’s war in Iran has inflicted higher energy and gas prices on the American people,” said Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). “Meanwhile, Trump’s brokers have been trading oil and gas stocks for him, helping him profit on the global instability he’s inciting. It’s profoundly unethical.”
By end of 2025, Trump held up to $45.6 million in oil and gas stocks.
Given the sky-high oil and gas profits tied to Trump’s war in Iran, that portfolio is now worth up to $61.1 million.

The White House said the president does not make trades himself, but CREW president Donald Sherman told CBS News that Trump should not be making “significant profits on the global instability he’s inciting.”
“President Trump’s war of choice in Iran has cost the American people in the form of higher energy and gas prices and higher shipping costs,” Sherman said. “Meanwhile, Trump’s brokers have been trading oil and gas stocks for him... It doesn’t matter whether he’s trading the stocks himself—the president has a duty to avoid conflicts of interest between his finances and what’s best for the American people.”
Unlike other US presidents, Trump has refused to place his assets in a blind trust, instead continuing to hold stocks that are visible to him in all 11 sectors involved in the stock market.
In June, the president’s stock portfolio made a series of energy trades, including two sales and one purchase of ExxonMobil stock that were valued between $1,001 and $15,000. He also bought and sold Chevron stocks three times and made three sales of ConocoPhillips holdings.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said that the new filings show “Trump’s only focus is enriching himself at the expense of the American people.”

Trump’s war on Iran is rapidly draining US navy budget, documents and interviews reveal
Donald Trump’s war on Iran has driven the US military into a severe financial crisis, with the US navy forced to transfer money from its payroll and other sources to cover the costs of combat, according to documents obtained by the Guardian, and interviews with navy officials, contractors and defense analysts. The US-Israeli operation, which has depleted US munitions stockpiles and prompted retaliatory Iranian strikes that have wrecked strategic bases across the Middle East, is piling pressure on budgets across the military.
One Pentagon memo about navy funding seen by the Guardian warns that there are “shortfalls in payroll” accounts due to the department “raiding” them to fund combat operations. Experts and former officials say the accounts are running dry. “The piggy bank is broken,” said Harlan Ullman, a retired naval officer. Ullman is a member of the National Commission for the Future of the Navy but he said he is not speaking on the commission’s behalf. One official and one navy contractor said non-emergency maintenance on shore-based facilities has been deferred because of the cash crunch.
When Trump started the war on 28 February, it quickly strained the military’s existing budgets – particularly that of the navy, which not only helped launch the initial wave of attacks but was later responsible for an extensive naval blockade. The White House eventually asked Congress for emergency funding to pay for the war efforts, but prospects that the request will be approved are dim amid the unpopularity of the war.
A navy official who was briefed on how the service is planning to address the shortfalls said money is shifted around in imaginative ways. “The money for payroll,” he said, “was robbed to pay for overseas contingencies and is being backfilled by money that hasn’t been spent. They are backfilling payroll so we get enough money in our paycheck.”

Trump signs executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America
Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario, making it Lake America, amid his escalating trade war with Canada. The order directs federal agencies to adopt the name-change on US maps, documents and databases. But Trump has no authority to rename Canada’s portion of the lake, nor to compel Canada, international legal bodies, international mapmakers, or the rest of the world to adopt a new name.
The move follows a similar action the president took on the first day of his second term in office, when he signed an order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”.
“We have a gulf and we have a lake – now all we need is an ocean. Maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific,” he told reporters, sitting at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. “Maybe we’ll change them both.” Propped behind the US president was a large map of the Great Lakes region, with “Lake America” printed in red lettering above Lake Ontario.
Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, rejected the US’s attempt to rename the body of water, explaining in a post on social media that its name comes from the language of the Indigenous Wendat people and predates both the Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, recalled that school children learn the acronym H-O-M-E-S for the names of the five great lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior. And the Wisconsin governor, Democrat Tony Evers, mocked the move by sharing a video of himself changing the name of Lake Michigan to Lake Wisconsin, signed on a restaurant napkin.

Democrats to investigate ‘miraculous’ rise of Trump Jr’s investment firm
Democrats on a powerful US congressional committee have launched an investigation into a venture capital firm which has thrived since recruiting Donald Trump’s son. Donald Trump Jr joined 1789 Capital as a partner just days after his father won a second term in office in November 2024. Congressman Jamie Raskin, ranking member of the US House of Representatives judiciary committee, has asked the president’s son to detail the firm’s recent success.
The Guardian previously reported that after Trump Jr joined 1789 Capital, its assets under management ballooned: going from a reported $150m in 2024, to $1bn last August, to $2.7bn at year’s end, to a reported $3.5bn by May, according to SEC filings. A significant proportion of that capital came from foreign investors, according to CNN reporting and the Guardian’s review of SEC filings. Forty per cent of assets under management were from overseas investors.
In a letter to the US president’s son, and the founders of the firm – Omeed Malik and Christopher Buskirk – judiciary committee Democrats have asked for records that include companies that have received investments from the firm and any communications with any US elected official or federal government officials by 9 September. However, in the minority, Democrats have little subpoena power without Republican support for their cause.
“Two years ago,” Raskin wrote, 1789 Capital was “a struggling venture capital firm that earned consistently disappointing results by serially investing in total market flops” but has since undergone a “miraculous transformation”.
“With Don Jr’s new leadership role, 1789 Capital has developed an uncanny ability to identify companies that are about to receive massive influxes of cash from the Trump administration or to benefit from significant changes in federal policies and regulations,” the top Democrat wrote. “They say there is no such thing as a sure thing in investing, but this is about as close as you can get.”
Florida grand jury finds DeSantis administration ‘misappropriated’ funds from Medicaid settlement
A Florida grand jury has found that the administration of the governor, Ron DeSantis, “misappropriated” $10m in taxpayer money from a Medicaid settlement into the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity with ties to DeSantis’s wife, before the money was reportedly “funneled” into “two political action committees”.
In the grand jury report, which remains sealed but was obtained and published by CBS News Miami on Wednesday, the grand jurors wrote that “we conclude that these funds were misappropriated as part of a sophisticated scheme to fund political activities” but said that they found “insufficient evidence to charge anyone criminally”.
The grand jury report, dated 28 January 2026, states that in 2024, the Hope Florida Foundation received $10m from a Medicaid settlement between the state and Centene, a contractor for the government health insurance program for low-income Americans and children. The report goes on to say that after the money was transferred to Hope Florida, it was “quickly funneled” from there into two political action committees, and that the money was then reportedly used to lobby against a ballot measure that would have legalized marijuana in Florida, and was sent to the Republican party of Florida.
In the report, the jurors write that “nobody will take responsibility for deciding the $10 million of taxpayer money would go to Hope Florida” and “this decision was the original misappropriation, and no witness would take responsibility for making the decision or had any memory of who made it”.
“While we can’t prove who is responsible, we can plainly see that taxpayer money was misused for political purposes and we would like to see changes made to prevent this from happening again,” the report concludes. When asked by a reporter about the report on Thursday, DeSantis said that the only crime that was “apparent was whoever leaked the grand jury report”. He described the settlement as “legally sound” and “appropriate” and that it “advanced the interest of state”.

Newly obtained documents indicate that the US health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, lied during two congressional hearings last year, when he told lawmakers who held the key to his confirmation that a 2019 visit to Samoa had “nothing to do with vaccines”.
Letters obtained by the Guardian and the Associated Press contradict that testimony. In one he wrote to the Samoan prime minister before the trip, Kennedy explicitly said he wanted to study the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine in the Pacific island nation. In it, he used the words “vaccine” or “vaccination” eight times.
“I am writing this letter to you in the hope that we might be helpful to the people of your great nation,” he wrote, adding that he believed the deaths of two children there after an MMR vaccine could have resulted from manufacturing issues. "I would propose my team conduct detailed health informatics assessment in Samoa of what happened with your MMR vaccines,” Kennedy wrote.
Kennedy’s Samoa visit – just months before a measles outbreak swept through the island, killing 83 people – has become one of the most controversial events in his career. At the time, he was leading a non-profit known for its anti-vaccine activism. The visit was seen by critics as having emboldened anti-vaccine activists in Samoa.
Beyond shedding light on the intent of Kennedy’s visit, the letter raises questions about the health secretary’s integrity and how truthful he was in testimony before Congress. During the confirmation process, Kennedy also pledged to maintain vaccine policies that, once in office, he moved to change. Knowingly giving material false testimony to Congress is a crime that carries a possible prison sentence, though it is rarely prosecuted.

US Postal Service says new mail ballot rules tied to Trump order are in effect
The US Postal Service (USPS) said on Thursday that new requirements for mail-in voting are now in effect as Donald Trump seeks to crack down on the practice. The move is expected to trigger a new round of legal challenges. The Trump administration has sought to impose new rules requiring state election leaders to submit their voter rolls for inspection as part of a broader bid to increase federal government oversight over voting and elections.
The post office requirements stem from an executive order issued by Trump earlier this year, requiring the post office to refrain from delivering ballots for mail-in voting to registered voters deemed ineligible when compared to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal records. The USPS posted a final rule on ballot delivery on Friday. On Thursday, the service said it would be implemented immediately, applying to ballots for November’s US midterm elections.
The US supreme court ruled on Monday that an injunction by a lower court should be lifted, at least until the post office had begun implementing the rule. The procedural ruling did not address the legality, or constitutionality, of the rule.The constitution confers control over elections to states and Congress, not the executive.
El Niño climate patterns supercharged by burning of fossil fuels
A series of strong El Niño climatic patterns in recent decades, such as the “Godzilla” event currently brewing that is set to warp weather around the world, have been supercharged by the broader overheating of the planet caused by the burning of fossil fuels, a major new study has found. El Niño is a naturally occurring phenomenon, taking place every two to seven years, when the waters of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean heat up, causing a cascade of impacts around the world. The latest developing El Niño, set to peak later this year, is set to be the strongest in living memory and has been informally dubbed a “Godzilla” event.
It’s well understood that El Niño, which typically brings a surge of global heat, further amplifies the escalating climate crisis, with next year almost certain to be the hottest on record globally. But the new research has established that the reverse is also the case: human-caused global heating is making El Niño itself more intense when it does arrive.
“Our findings suggest El Niño can supercharge global warming but also global warming can supercharge El Niño – that is what we are seeing,” said Julia Cole, a climate researcher at the University of Michigan, who led the new study, published in Science. “We are seeing a trend of stronger El Niños and the one we have now is consistent with that trend – it’s not a fluke. We are seeing a shift where El Niño doesn’t look like what it did prior to industrial times. That is bad news for climate hazards and for people, particularly those who are badly impacted and yet have done little to cause climate change.”
Such strong El Niño episodes have become far more common as overall global temperatures have risen, scientists found in the new research, which painstakingly analyzed the composition of large boulder-like deposits of coral fossils found on the Galápagos Islands. These old corals, which date to 1,000 years ago, contain chemical compositions that indicate what the sea surface temperature was like when they were alive. The Galápagos, situated off the coast of mainland Ecuador, is “right in the heart of El Niño country”, Cole said, where surrounding waters heat up during such an event.
While El Niños remained fairly stable for most of this long period, things started to change around the time the world started to mass industrialize in the late 19th century. This process has become even more extreme in the past 40 years, with El Niños’ variability now around 37% higher than during preindustrial times. “After the El Niño in 1982, we start seeing much more variability; it’s a lot more extreme and looks like nothing in the previous 1,000 years,” said Cole, whose team managed to rule out any random or naturally occurring reason for this switch.
One of east coast’s largest datacenters accused of ‘violating federal law’
The largest planned AI datacenter in New Jersey is being accused of violating federal law after a visual investigation found the site running dozens of unpermitted gas-powered generators. Thermal drone footage captured by the non-profit newsroom Floodlight last week showed the partly completed DataOne facility in Vineland was operating at least 45 of the site’s 62 generators at the time.
The datacenter has stirred controversy since breaking ground in 2025 due to persistent noise complaints, unpermitted construction and a contentious zoning process. It’s located about 40 miles (64km) outside Philadelphia and slated to provide AI computing power to Microsoft as part of a $17bn deal with Nebius, a Dutch AI infrastructure giant. The facility is one of many across the US that have faced opposition from local residents concerned about their impacts.
Located roughly a mile from two schools, the site’s tractor-trailer-size generators emit substantial amounts of health-harming air pollution linked to asthma, heart attacks and even premature death. None have permits.
Federal and state law requires DataOne “to have a final permit before bringing those generators on site, and certainly before firing them up”, Bruce Buckheit, a former EPA air enforcement chief, told Floodlight. Buckheit, who served under multiple Republican administrations, believes DataOne’s activities “violate federal law” and that the company should immediately stop operating the generators and pay a fine for “their illegal emissions”.
A New Jersey department of environmental protection (NJDEP) spokesperson confirmed that the agency “has issued no permits, nor are any permit applications under review for power generators at the DataOne facility in Vineland”. The spokesperson said the agency noticed the generators during a site inspection on 29 July and had yet to make “a full compliance determination”. They declined to answer follow-up questions.
Climate crisis could be destabilising mountain areas like Nepal
The devastating flash flood that has ripped through the border communities of Nepal and Tibet has heightened fears that the climate crisis is destabilising the geology of mountain and polar regions, threatening millions of people. Satellite imagery suggests a glacier collapse high in the Himalayas was the primary cause of the deadly torrent of mud, water and ice that tore along the Bhotekoshi River on Wednesday. It swept away buildings and roads and left at least 360 dead and 1,400 missing.
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was initially blamed for the collapse. However, it is now thought to have been caused by the huge wall of ice that crashed down on to the north slope of Langtang Lirung, a 7,000-metre (23,000ft) mountain, the impact of which registered a magnitude of 5.2. “Additional analysis of long-period seismic waves indicates that the seismic energy was instead generated by a glacial collapse and debris flow,” the US Geological Survey said.
The ice-rock avalanche pushed boulders and other debris into the Lhende Khola River, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi River. Water levels in rivers downstream rose by between 7 and 9 metres within 30 minutes, according to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, an intergovernmental scientific institution.
Scientists are still examining the precise mechanics of the Himalayan disaster, but many observe that glaciers and permafrost around the world are being weakened by global heating, caused by the burning of gas, oil and coal. The detachment of a chunk of the glacier wall came amid unusual heat that was likely to have melted the ice that bound the splintered bedrock together.
Two days before the collapse, the ground temperature hit its highest point in the last two years, according to Dr Hamish Pritchard, a glaciologist with the British Antarctic Survey, whose team had sensors 6 miles (10km) away from the site. “These high temperatures would have weakened the snowpack, filled crevasses with water and thawed the bonds between ice and rock that hold these glaciers in place,” he told the Science Media Centre. A series of intense heatwaves has hit the region since early this year and affected countries around the world.

i think perhaps that the navajo are considered too small a fly to swat for the billionaire class that will just take whatever it wants and always has. meanwhile the billionaires from their earliest predecessors on this continent have worked assiduously to prevent a democracy from ever forming. they've been remarkably successful.

As much as I appreciate The Guardian's geological and environmental description of the floods, it left out a very significant point. China withholds sensitive information from Nepal, information that could have saved large numbers of lives.

if china was withholding information, i wouldn't be surprised. china has always seemed to have territorial urges in that region, sometimes backed by the people's liberation army.

well doggone it, somebody's gotta fight china for the empire! it's best if it's somebody other than the empire itself - the empire is overstretched and it's hard to justify the loss of blood and treasure politically. gotta get korea and/or japan to do it, korea's getting cold feet, so we better light a fire under japan.
