National Freedom Day is a United States observance on February 1 honoring the signing by Abraham Lincoln of a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Lincoln signed the Amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865, although it was not ratified by the states until later.

OK, that's what it's about, it's not about "America's Freedoms" or "all of the freedoms that Americans Share" or anything of that ilk, which is verbiage that I have seen. It celebrates the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery in the US (not in America, much of the rest of the America's had already abolished it). Those America's Freedoms (tm), the ones that the USA's creation, Al Qaeda, allegedly hated us for (per GWB) are not encompassed within the abolition of slavery as an institution. Those are not National Freedoms; they are Notional Freedoms. Like the principal in notional principal contracts, they're largely mythical and growing more so daily. You know, like speech, assembly, privacy, and just about everything in the Bill of rights except the right to bear GUNS (not arms, there are vast numbers of restrictions on various other "arms", like pocket knives). At this point I shall segue into something else before I go on a 6,000 word rant.

can happen here, it is and has been happening here, but not quite so crudely and not so much by magamen and other such elements. The owner class and the corporates are having their will and their way with the country and its economy and its resources and, most especially, its populace.They can seize your property, freeze your accounts, incarcerate you or restrict your movement, legally, for simply suspecting you of things, an accusation is all they need, not any facts or evidence. Annnnd, many of those things are simply thought crimes, the wrong kind of heresies. Meanwhile, they are above the law. A corporation can commit enormous crimes and pay a severely disproportionate fine or fee and none of its principals will do a day of time. As a rule, they don't need the troops, the cops or the sekret police to control us, we just go along with it because if we don't we are toast.

funny you should notate that way. It is difficult to find a
US form which allows for the European convention of day, month, year. Same with calendar, or any software for that matter. We have everything in the EU/French scheme. Up to month 12, it is difficult to tell if we are reading days or months first.
Very rainy, too warm: 50°f and much higher this week. Insects are coming out, birds haven't arrived, field onions are up, and bushes and trees are showing signs of awakening. It will get cold again and stay dreary for months. The birds and bats don't stand much of a chance. Inertia kept them going for a decade or two, but now there is perceptible drops in numbers.

Chestnut-backed has to be the fanciest chickadee in the U.S. They are beautiful. I think my lifer was Tomales Bay, about '67 or so.

Actually that picture does appear to be of a Black-capped Chickadee, but the only Chickadee south of roughly the Mason-Dixon line (except at high altitude in the Apps) is the Carolina Chickadee. Which looks VERY like a Black-capped. Some minor differences, especially less white on the wing, calls are very different. They do hybridize and there is a hybrid zone in the contact area where range overlap. Carolina is smaller, less buffy on sides, and shorter tailed. It is the only chickadee in most of the SE U.S.

fallback format is mmddyy, though when 20xx years were new I shifted to mmddyyyy for a bit. In personal stuff, for example, today is 010221 which has a lot to do with sorting since crude/simple string based info handlers will mix and match 1, 10, and 11 if written without dashes or slashes.
Dose boids, per most of my sources and references are Tits. In particular, those two are the Great Tit and the Blue Tit. The old world Paridae were known as tits long before all the invaders of this country decided to call most of those here "chickadees" onomatopoeically. The original name for the group did somewhat carryover with respect to the titmice, however, which you will also find up there in the PNW.

As EL pointed out, they are called tits in Europe/Asia, actually all the rest of the world except the U.S. where they are chickadees. They are a bunch of great ones, but your two, Great and Blue are two of the prettiest. There are also Penduline, Long-tailed, Azure, Coal, Crested. Bearded, Sombre, Siberian, Willow, and Marsh Tits. They have great diversity over there.

In France they fall generally under Méssanges with modifiers like Charbonnière, Bleue, Nonette, Boreal, Huppe (crested) and more. We have British bird books (where some of this great variety are called Tits) and the French and European Bird books where they are called different names depending on the country. The last one I linked to is from oiseaux.net, which has information on the Nonette. Also ranges, nesting, and short snips of song. Pictures of country flags with the local names are also included.
The Latin names surprised us as they fall into distinct species different from one another. We've lost some of our favorite birds, but picked up others which would be exotic in the US. We have to use Latin to connect the various country names.

That Hoopoe is a bucketlist bird for lots of birders not lucky enough to live where they are. I know a guy whose user name is their genus, Upupa. I have never been across the pond so not seen one, maybe one day.
So what does the french Messanges translate to, do you know?
Generally only in America do we learn bird names without learning the binomial. Which is not the standard elsewhere. Because of what you say... every country has its own name for various groups, and species. Here we do often learn say insects that way, at least serious study, but birds are called by common name here. The scientific names are used in much of the world.

Good Monday morning to all! Guess I should enjoy my freedom while it is still part of my life. Just was reading how woman’s rights in Texas to own property and be her own master were limited until the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Freedom is something we must remain vigilant to protect as best we can.
Weather here is in the 60’s and dry so will enjoy my freedom and enjoy the outdoors with a nice bicycle ride this afternoon once I am finished with yoga in the morning.
Life is what you make it, so make it something worthwhile.

Oh wow, can you believe that I have been four years now
back in Germany and haven't been able to drive to any other city than Berlin and Hamburg? Haven't visited all those cities in the former DDR. I just don't know how to get out of my cage here without causing damage to others.
Same was true for the US. More privileged folks than me, surrounding my family, have seen more of the US than me as tourist visitors. I stood put in DC for 36 years, one visit to New Orleans, one visit to Chicago and one visit to LA up to San Francisco to Mendocino. I remember nothing of Chicago, a tiny bit of the New Orleans, almost nothing of SF. Well, it was over 34 years ago and I had a lot of distracting stuff in my head.

on the garden front. My wife has some seedlings starting inside by a window. We have some chard, a few carrots and a few onions (probably spring onions) in the ground as well as some mysterious member of the bok choy clan and an indomitable Portuguese kale that was transplanted many times and possibly started from a cutting and now is a tall stem with foliage only at the top. No seed house or green house, which is too bad because I would have liked to do some pole beans as an experiment.

Sonny Landreth is awesome, he invented his own technique and style with that slide, and a sound like no other. I am a sucker for creative originality. Rich Williams was awesome too. I saw Kansas, on maybe their first west coast tour in 1974 I think it was, Long Beach Arena, they were an opening act and played most of their first album straight through. It was all they had at the time. They were awesome, I was blown away. Have that first album on vinyl.

If you can get a really good luck at the bill with binos, check the nostrils. Peregrines have a little cone pointing outward right in the center of their nostrils, like a lot of jet engines. They deflect the shockwaves away from the nasal passages to keep them from blowing out their lungs on those super high speed dives of theirs.

Thx. Will look for the nostril formation. There is an adult peregrine right here in our neighborhood. We have Cooper’s in the hills. Never seen one down here nor hv my birder friends. It’s eating about three birds an hour. Sits on top of one of my sculptures and waits. the siskins also hv salmonella but do not pass it on except to chickadees and we hv been told to remove the feeders for 3 weeks. Or keep them clean - a fools errand, the cleaning.
Edit to add the peregrine eyes are black and the Coopers are yellow, smaller and closer to the nose. Peregrine is definitely aerodynamically designed. Beauty.

My wife says sometimes we are running an accipiter feeding station here. Hunting at bird feeders in a yard is an accipiter. Cooper's, Sharpy, or Gos (rare and unlikely). Falcons like Peregrine, Merlin, and Prairie hunt in open areas generally by flushing the prey, and then taking it in the air. Accipters mostly take their prey on the ground and hunt in woods, hedgerows, around feeding stations, brushy habitat where falcons simply cannot maneuver.
One easy tell is are the wings pointed sharply, or rounded? Falcons have long pointed wings and wingtips, accipiters have short rounded wings, for tight turns in tight places.
If you see three birds taken in a day, you have three different individuals hunting there. Only when feeding young would one bird do such a thing. I age and sex virtually all birds every time I can and by doing so know there are at least four Sharp-shinned Hawks hitting the birds here: ad. male and female, imm. male and female. Same for Cooper's Hawk here! They do not eat more than a bird every couple days when not feeding young.
For both (Coop and Sharpy) males are much smaller than females, and then of course the imm.s are brown above and vertically streaked below, the adults are gray above with horizontal rufous streaking below. The biggest female Sharpy is still smaller than the smallest male Cooper's though. If it is more than barely bigger than a Robin, it is not a Sharpy.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
