Wounded Knee, What has YOUR Government done for you Today?

massacre at wounded knee.jpg

Exactly 126 years ago today, the government of the United States sent a sadistic assortment of United States Army Indian killers to South Dakota to exterminate more Indians. (Oh wait, maybe they all weren't sadistic, maybe some were actually nice guys. And maybe they didn't really go there to exterminate them, it just happened and had nothing to do with the previous centuries of massacres.)

"As dawn appeared on December 29, 1890, about 350 Lakota Indians awoke, having been forced by the US Army to camp the night before alongside the Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. The US Cavalry’s 7th Regiment had “escorted” them there the day prior and, now, surrounded the Indians with the intent to arrest Chief Big Foot (also called Spotted Elk) and disarm the warriors.

When a disagreement erupted, army soldiers opened fire, including with Hotchkiss machine guns. Within minutes, hundreds of children, men, and women were shot down. Perhaps as many as three hundred killed and scores wounded that morning."

It was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history and it was done by the U.S. government. It was near the end of the genocidal "Indian wars" where the white settlers of North America set out to eliminate the Native American population and steal their land.

From a high of anywhere from two to eight million, "By 1900, about two hundred thousand remained, nearly all consigned to remote wastelands in the interior west that elites considered worthless."

Today, the United States government continues to send it's military around the planet to kill and subjugate any humans that get in it's Manifest Destiny way. The American people, generally and collectively, still support their heroes who are willing to kill anyone for "freedom" and the "American way of life".

Sometimes I sit back and wonder why more people didn't fight back against their own government to stop the genocide. Certainly there were plenty who opposed the Indian wars and the absurd racism but not nearly enough. The Indian wars continued, decade after decade, until the vast majority of all Indians were killed and the rest were placed in concentration camps to assimilate or die. Out of sight, out of mind, the American people let it happen.

Today, the American people find themselves in a similar situation in that their government is sending their military to kill innocent men, women and children in other countries. The fraudulent War OF Terror is in it's fifteenth year, surpassing all U.S. wars in length, except the Indian wars. And still, the American people sit back and let it happen. Again, there are people who oppose the wars, the imperialism, and the massacres, but not nearly enough.

Today, YOUR government killed more innocent men, women and children in Iraq and Syria, 126 years to the day of the Wounded Knee Massacre.

Where will we be at in another hundred years? The possibilities are frightening. Will this country ever make amends? Will it ever stop the killing?

I don't think that it will stop killing innocent people around the world. Our government isn't going to stop it because there is too much money in play. The only way I can think to stop it is for people to stop joining the military. Especially on the false pretenses of spreading freedom and democracy or to protect our country and our freedoms.
Haven't the young people who are joining up seen the homeless vets or heard the horror stories about them not being able to get treatment?
I don't understand why people would join up knowing that they could be killed or horribly injured.
Smedley's book should be required reading in high school, but I know that there's no way in hell that they would allow the truth about war get out.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

game changer. A giant re-education campaign might do it, but we'd need a lot of money to pull that off, particularly fighting against the total propaganda machine we're faced against.

In some neighborhoods the military is one of the few full-time job opportunities available.

Based upon my experience in the Peace vigil, many were National Guard who got called up. Also many believed that they were really fighting for our defense until they got there and saw it first hand. Then they realized they had been lied to.

In many small rural towns, the jobs have dried up and many join the military as their only way out and to learn a trade.

Of course, it is all lies, but we Americans have been programmed since early childhood to believe in American exceptionalism and that we are the defenders of justice.

It is a matter of both equality and justice. When you view others as less than you, you are entitled to abuse them....especially if they interfere with your greed. Part of the sickness of our society.

Peacefully. He had pneumonia. The army sought to arrest him, and shot him instead. And some 300 of his people.

One of the ongoing fuck-yous from the US government to the indigenous peoples is the issue of the medals. Soldiers were honored for participating in this slaughter of people who were just trying to live their lives.

Resource extraction and exploitation (along with the stealing of land) is one of the founding principles of this country. The "freedom" argument is the propaganda that covers it up. As George Carlin said, "America is an oil company with an army."

The descendants of these murdering soldiers are the cops and mercenaries at Standing Rock.

Yeah. You're right. Yes, it's true.

Does anyone besides DFHs really care?

Nope.

Long ago we left ToP. Sorry to say, even here I question the community commitment. At least here, we can express our true thoughts and feelings without being banned by corporatist scum.

At least that's something.
