Why no one is talking about the recall of San Francisco Board of Ed
This week three members of the San Francisco board of education were recalled by percentages in the 70s. Democrats recalling Democrats. Yes they had some big contributions, they also had thousands of moms going door to door and ballots printed in Mandarin.
You mess with education and Asians get pissed.
Asians used to dominate the entry to SF's most prestigious public school where admittance was by test score. The woke Board of Ed changed things to lottery and geography to boost Hispanic and Black entry and it worked, at the expense of Asians. Poor Asians, immigrants.
Others were pissed off that the board spent too much time discussing name changes to things like schools named for Lincoln or Pelosi, and doing nothing like issuing lap tops so kids could attend remotely.
One of the board members made a racist comment about Asians also, which normally Asians could care less about, but it sure didn't help.
One of the few people covering the story is Thomas Fuller who covered Asia, from Asia, for the NYT, and now reports from CA. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/16/us/san-francisco-school-board-recall....
Why the silence from the rest of the media, especially seeing as this story is about the most liberal city in the US? No one wants to see the ouster of woke. Virtue signalers are in a quandary. Asians are typically apolitical, they register as independents, few vote. That's changing, and the efforts by Democrats to eliminate the meritocracy is a good part of the catalyst.
There is another recall in June, that one is for the District Attorney. NPR says it's instigated by conservative Republicans. Frankly any Republican is about useless in SF, anything political is Democratic, and if the DA is recalled it will be due to Democratic votes.
Asians are a small minority in the US, and they are actually many different and varied cultures. They do share some commonalities though. They're way into bettering themselves via education, and they don't like criminality. Asians used to be dependable Democratic voters, that could change.

Wasn't it also about covid?
SF also was accused of being too hard core about keeping the schools closed and the students masked. Asians "invented" masking, they know bullshit when they see it.
As for the DA recall, that'll be different, though the result probably won't. SF is a very class conscious, machine run city. The DA was not the anointed one. Hence all those stories about rampant shoplifting. He actually made some noise about rampant corruption - meaning he wasn't good enough about keeping the poor people (but not the poor who stayed invisible enough for the virtue signalers) in their place.
I'd actually like a real SF perspective. I'm an expat, forced from the city by Willie Brown and Diane Feinstein. My observations are a decade old.
On to Biden since 1973
@doh1304 Many sure do wish it were
The recent mayoral elections in NYC had some surprising demographics when you drilled down into the precinct level. Another case of Asians bucking the trend and voting Republican, again over the changed rules on acceptance to the cities most competitive public schools and violence.
Asians are a small minority, but minorities add up. Working class whites now include working class Hispanics who are no longer POC but now white also. Trump also improved with Black men in 2020, by 6%, You can only kick so many people out of your party and you no longer have a party.
Egalitarianism in education is weird
My teachers in like 3rd grade offered to let me skip a grade, then convinced my parents not to let me do it - ruined my development.
As for racism - it's so stupid it's almost a joke. The first Japanese killed for stealing UAW jobs were Chinese. The first Iraqui killed in America in vengence for 9/11 was a Sikh (his brother was killed for the same reason a year later.)
On to Biden since 1973
I think that racism and protectionism is simply why?
Asians in NZ are only 1% less than the indigenous Maori population. They are the third most populous ethnic group, and a 6th of the entire population. Unfortunately we have a similar degree of racism regarding Asians here, as you have in the US.
And to think that Asians in the US are 8x more populous than native american indians. What a telling sign that reflects. Seems like racism in any form and population is perpetually adverse to furthering common good.

ban nock,
thank you for bringing up this subject. I think public education policy is extremely important to everything we talk about here, from foreign policy to environmental devastation to human rights. I don't live in San Francisco, but as a Bay Area resident I want to know more about this recall and the issues. My focus of interest is on the long term Achievement Gap, merit-based admissions, and tracking systems, but also the Asian American Achievement phenomenon and how it throws a wild card into the entire education discussion.
