When seeing is no longer believing Inside the Pentagon’s race against deepfake videos
Well, our Lords and Masters are coming out in the open now. The propaganda is stomach turning. But millions will suck it up like a cool drink on a hot summers day. This is a goofy CNN piece that involves lots videos and links, but It basically states outright that programs are being developed BY OUR GOVERNMENT to flag and weed out stories that don’t pass their smell test. They’re going to decide what’s material is approved and what isn’t. What information they think we should have. But really what this is is validation that all the stories about censorship aren’t CT.
When seeing is no longer believing
Inside the Pentagon’s race against deepfake videosAdvances in artificial intelligence could soon make creating convincing fake audio and video – known as “deepfakes” – relatieevely easy. Making a person appear to say or do something they did not has the potential to take the war of disinformation to a whole new level. Scroll down for more on deepfakes and what the US government is doing to combat them.

Now deepfake technology is on the US government's radar
The Pentagon, through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is working with several of the country’s biggest research institutions to get ahead of deepfakes.
But in order to learn how to spot deepfakes, you first have to make them. That takes place at the University of Colorado in Denver, where researchers working on DARPA’s program are trying to create convincing deepfake videos. These will later be used by other researchers who are developing technology to detect what’s real and what’s fake.
What happens if we can no longer trust our eyes or our ears?
For more than a century, audio and video have functioned as a bedrock of truth. Not only have sound and images recorded our history, they have also informed and shaped our perception of reality.
Some people already question the facts around events that unquestionably happened, like the Holocaust, the moon landing and 9/11, despite video proof. If deepfakes make people believe they can’t trust video, the problems of misinformation and conspiracy theories could get worse. While experts told CNN that deepfake technology is not yet sophisticated enough to fake large-scale historical events or conflicts, they worry that the doubt sown by a single convincing deepfake could alter our trust in audio and video for good.

What's next?
The emergence of deepfake technology has prompted members of the U.S. Congress to request a formal report from the Director of National Intelligence. Senator Marco Rubio worries about the global fallout after a convincing deepfake goes viral before it’s detected.

Damn, if Senator Big Gulp is worried, then you know it’s gotta be for real.

I saw this movie.

And I already don't trust audio or video. That barn door's been open for a LONG time.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Well the only difference is ‘they’re’ out
in the open about it now.

CGI...it's the new "reality!"
A few years ago, when I first started reading about how, in the near future, (due to the increasing sophistication/technological developments of CGI) "actors" would no longer be reqiured for movie productions, I thought about this. And, then I thought about what happened in this country, a few years earlier, when our government--essentially--repealed the Smith-Mundt Act via the 2012 NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act), and the ultimate, Orwellian-named Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012, I pretty much realized that "reality" and "news" were gonna' be a whole 'nother thing, altogether!

May Harryhausen's Spirit watch us all...
May his wisdom grant us the sight to see the true nature of what lies beyond the screen.
And may his dreams guide us toward our own creations, built in a garage, with the help of our family.

This is not new.
The technology has changed, but image fakery to deceive the public has been used before. Think of Lee Harvey Oswald's contention that the photo showing him posing with a rifle in a backyard had been faked--something that has since been backed up by numerous JFK assassination researchers. It has been shown that the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination was altered. So this is not new.
Digital audio/video fakery does make it easier to come up with convincing results. But the defense against this sort of thing is the same: do not accept whatever the media pushes at us uncritically. Don't trust; Verify. And if everything falls too neatly into place (Juan Guaido declares himself President of Venezuela, and within hours the U.S. and a bunch of U.S. allies voice their support--think it was planned?), be suspicious.
