Violence in Portland Oregon
According to police, [A, perhaps, mentally ill assailant], 35, stabbed Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche and two other men after they came to the aid of two girls who were being harassed (by said assailant) for being Muslim.
"He was saying that Muslims should die," Dyjuana Hudson, a mother of one of the girls, said. "That they’ve been killing Christians for years."
Her daughter is African-American and was with a friend who was wearing a hijab, she said.
One of the stabbing victims died at the scene and another died at a hospital. The third person was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Taliesin Myrddin graduated from Ashland High School and Reed College.

All this is on the Republicans ...
If you bother to get past the rhetorical bullshit it is clear that our screwed up criminal justice system, our dysfunctional health care system, our fucked up economic system is the result of Republicans pushing us toward the edge of the abyss.
Yea, Yea, Yea, I know about how the fucked up Democrats are not really interested in doing anything about the situation. But the push to oblivion is coming from a very special kind of psychopaths. They can not be dealt with until we can make real changes in this country.
So, first we should kill all the lawyers? NO !!!
First we kill the Democratic party. The Democratic party is the weak link and therefore represents the best opportunity for generating a solution. Kill it, in the process of creating a progressive / left / [I really don't care what it is called] party. Then and only then can we have the wherewithal to kill the right. Most importantly, we need to eliminate the Religious right.
This is actually happening to the Mormon Church. I do not know if other fundamentalist denominations are experiencing a similar decline, but making them a vanishingly small minority is critical to creating sustainable change. Sustainable change is impossible without civility. Civility is impossible as long as the Religious right enjoys any legitimacy.
Rec'd! Was Meche killed?
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Yes, sorry about being ambiguous.
Meche died at the hospital. 53-year-old Ricky John Best of Happy Valley, Oregon, died at the scene of the crime. 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher is at the hospital and is expected to be fine.
PR, there is plenty of blame to go around.
As the social situation worsens, which it is continuously, scapegoating will become ever more prevalent.
You predict global warming.
I predict global bloodshed.

I do not advocate violence.
But if you do not fear the distinct possibility of violence, then you're not paying attention.

Best and Fletcher
According to posts making the rounds of Facebook this afternoon, the surviving "hero" who was also attacked, Micah Fletcher, does not have health insurance, and his friends have started a GoFundMe page to pay for his medical bills.
It truly feels to me that we're hitting the tipping point, in so many ways.

Thank you for this information.
I feel the vertigo of a tipping point as well. The hate and tension is palpable.
Update on the (alleged) perpetrator
The Portland PD has now identified the person arrested for these crimes as one Jeremy Christian, a convicted felon and known white supremacist. Yep, that's his actual surname. Christian. (Seems like the universe is now blasting information to us in huge flashing neon lights that can't be missed or denied.)

I redacted his name with malaise aforethought.
In another case, a guy walked into a store carrying a human head
What on earth is going on there in Oregon?
http://www.apnewsarchive.com/2017/Authorities-say-a-man-carrying-a-human...
Same as everywhere ...
The systematic dismantling of social services and the dehumanization inherent in our national rhetoric has created a "do nothing" nihilistic culture wherein proactive options are ignored (and often vilified) in favor of reactive "solutions" guaranteed to perpetuate the spiraling into the abyss.
They're all mentally ill in my book.
That doesn't make murder and mayhem any better. It makes it worse.
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon
I was not clear ...
It's not about thinking it is better or it is worse, its about what we should be doing to make the world a better place. It's about solving problems before they get out of hand. It's about using our hard won expertise and stop relying upon knee-jerk reactions that don't address the real issues.
The killer, if mentally ill, should have been a part of an intervention program long before this happened. That is my point.
We can thank Reagan
for dismantling the mental health system.
And the lesson to us all should be: don't let them dismantle anything good because putting it back together again is impossible. It reminds me of this old cautionary tale by Mother Goose:
This is exactly why I don't go to protests.
I can't stand by and let violence happen.
I have kids and a SO to think of.
Better to be nowhere near it.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I understand what you are saying.
But in this case the guy was on the bus and went *pop*.
On Earth Day a large group of us walked from the University to the Museum in downtown. There were a couple of people along the way that wanted to "interact" with the group. Like Earth Day is so controversial.
The atmosphere of confrontation is ridiculous. I was less stressed in 1970, committing a federal felony, than I am today.
Too many people are on edge...
The MSM wants events like this to happen, and will do everything they can to ensure they happen. They LOVE it, as a matter of fact.
It fits the narrative they're trying to sell, gives em plenty of busy work that they can claim is "Essential", and prevents discussions about other topics under the guise of "You're clearly Islamophobic!"
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
I posted the following comment over on TPW:
"orlbucfan
Convicted felon “Christian,” huh? Ironic. I’ll be there next Thursday for a PNW bike run. Looks like Christian won’t be getting out of the great stripey hole anytime soon. Good riddance to super bad rubbish. T and R and a Safe Holiday to the usual suspects!!"![Sad](https://caucus99percent.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/sad.gif)
