UVMMC nurses' strike

Hi all: This is a very quick "update" by way of a Seven Days photo essay, which captures well the initial actions on Day One. I won't be available to comment after 5pm EST, but will dutifully check back tomorrow morning.

I drove the perimeter of the main campus this morning, honking and waving, and the nurses' presence was robust, and energy high. I've seen allusions to the fact that a UPS driver, in solidarity, refused to make a delivery to the hospital; but I need to verify this before reporting it as fact.

In the meantime, those seeking ongoing coverage can visit (in descending order of independence):

Burlington Free Press*

*BPF is another Gannett sell-out, so their slant is obvious ... but it still helps paint a picture.

[EDIT: grammar/typos]

Descending order of independence, I assume?

@thanatokephaloides Heh. I made a comment in arendt's diary about walking and chewing gum. Apparently this doesn't personally apply, as these are both the results of attempted multitasking. Blush

Thanks, than.

@mimi They were, indeed, typos: I'd forgotten the "http://" in my rush to post. I've fixed them now. Smile

As reported in Seven Days:

Picketing at hospital entrances slowed at noon when the union held a second rally outside the hospital. Nurses from Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, a UVM Health Network affiliate in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass., gave speeches and led chants. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who held a press conference in support of the nurses earlier this month, called in to express his support for the nurses.

Around the same time, Sanders’ supporters within a 10-mile radius of Burlington received a text from his campaign encouraging them to “stand alongside the nurses.

It's heartening to see the solidarity, especially from CVPH -- the network hospital to whom UVMMC nurses are asking to be compared.

I also received the text from Bernie's campaign.

Another group, Rights & Democracy Vermont, is calling for members of the public to picket CEO John Brumsted's office from 9-11am EST today. That office is just down the street, so I'm hoping to stop by.

We understand that for legal reasons the nurses union Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals/AFT cannot picket CEO John Brumsted’s office at this time, but WE THE COMMUNITY CAN!
