U.S. Diplomats Held Face-to-Face Talks With Taliban, Insurgents Say
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — In a reversal of a longstanding policy, American diplomats held face-to-face talks with Taliban representatives in Qatar a week ago without Afghan government officials present, two senior Taliban officials said on Saturday.
A State Department spokeswoman did not respond to questions about whether the talks took place. But the department did not deny that its diplomats had taken part in such talks — a significant shift in American strategy toward the Taliban in Afghanistan.
“Any negotiations over the political future of Afghanistan will be between the Taliban and Afghan government,” said the spokeswoman, Stephanie R. Newman.
The Afghan president’s office said on Saturday that it welcomed any support for peace efforts.
The talks took place in Doha, where the Taliban have long maintained an informal “political office” for the purpose of restarting the long-dormant peace process.

“As President Ghani has indicated, he’s ready to pursue something without conditions — that speaks for itself,” he said.
“Everything can be on the table here as we move forward with this Afghan-led process.”

It could be just another psycho-deflection, while the military blows up the ordinance and "depletes" supply depots to make room for new orders of bulky cash and consumable and lethal goods from the corporate winners of the defense contracts funded by the American middle class. Why would the elite class ever surrender a massive cash-cow like Afghanistan that pumps the war profits into their private banking accounts? What's more likely is the announcement is the prelude to another expensive surge-and-slaughter for Afghanistan. "We tried but they wouldn't listen." Remember that great big stupid bomb they exploded over Afghanistan after Trump took office? The Moab? That's the reliable icon of America and culmination of our civilization.
On the other hand, and on the off-chance that we have quietly entered a parallel universe where the future Afgan bullet catchers are allowed to speak with their local adversaries and negotiate a peace that satisfies their cultural proclivities — then the oligarchs are scared to death of something.
I hope it is us.
