For Uncle
I got word from my assistant on the first day of my vacation that my friend and client had passed away. He and I were close friends for at least 35 years. His sons are also my friends and clients.
Well, he is Lyle Lovett's uncle. I am not a fan big of country music, although I do have some artists I like. As it turns out, I had never heard Lyle's music.
I was introduced to Lyle's cool stuff by my husband. I told uncle about it, and he said, "Lyle is MUCH MORE than country."
He was so proud of Lyle, loved going to see and hear him play, and watched his on line videos during these past 2 years of COVID.
I haven't gotten word of the funeral, and if it hasn't happened yet, I will go, despite my dislike of funerals. I will probate uncle's will, which I prepared for him fairly recently.
I thought I would drop a couple of songs here, and let's see if you think uncle was right about that "MUCH MORE than country assessment.

Lyle gave his uncle many years of joy. Old uncle was able to watch all his video streamed shows for the past 2 years. He bragged that he got 'em for free!
I will miss him. Going to court and presenting his will is going to be very emotional for me.

Mr. Lovett
is uniquely gifted, and his music does indeed transcend traditional genre categorization. He is also a genuinely nice human being, entirely unlike the traditional frontman. He is much, much more a jazz/big band guy than people typically think.
He has one toe in the Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys big-band dance tradition, another in the Randy Newman school of really clever lyrics, and the rest is all him. "Road to Ensenada" is an absolute classic, and highly recommended for a non-country-music fan...

I just wrote him off as another country singer in boots, hat, ridin' in a rodeo. That is, until I HEARD him.
The Lovett family is cows and oil patch. Where his cleverness and artistry came from is atop a horse.
His uncle also got a kick out of Julia Roberts, sort of a "you go, boy!" attitude. Made him really proud of his nephew!

family members, and they all seem to have expected this, and were prepared for it.
He was being cared for my yet another client, a home health worker, and she had mentioned every day she went to his home, he was worse than the day before.

I know my client/Uncle's young grandson.
I reached out to the kid's Mom, asked if the kid took it in stride. She said the kid gave g'pa a helluva send off tribute at the funeral. The kid can sing. Play the piano. He seems to have that gene. There may one day be another creative Lovett on the concert stage.
