Tulsi Debates and Rises
As a backdrop to today's debate, Tulsi for the first time polled at 3% in a national poll. The Economist/YouGov from June 22-25, 1,500 US adults (see question 46):
At the debate today, Tulsi was mostly ignored, which is not really a surprise. For example, in the first 15 minutes, Warren got 5 or 6 questions, whereas Tulsi got 1, and then she butted in to someone elses question for a second speaking opportunity.
Towards the end, Tim Ryan was explaining why we have to stay in Afghanistan--because the Taliban attacked us--and Tulsi seemingly ended his career then and there.
Although it could have been better, she seems to have had *the* moment in the debate with the downing of Ryan, and she seems to have peaked all others in internet searches after that moment for the remainder of the debate.
Her non-interventionalism seems to have won many over.
Other impressions--Booker was more dominant than I thought he would be, but he messed up his Spanish speaking at one point. Warren and Booker seemed to get the most questions (they were the favorites), although Warren didn't steal the show or anything. O'Rourke really can't speak well, and he did not look on camera at all--not sure why (was he hung over?!?). They were all trying to sound like Bernie, and Booker was blatantly lying (in my opinion) about what he would do on the healthcare front.
In the end, Tulsi was too quiet, but she may have stole the show more than anyone else, and won it in a low-key sort of way.

Careful
That’s a choropleth map, which distorts by area. It did show interesting regional variations, though, with the south going for Booker. Also interesting that Warren leads in Oklahoma?
The Guardian was very unkind to Tulsi:

Oklahoma
Warren is from Oklahoma, so maybe that piqued some interest from the folks there.

Tulsi's debate video
I didn't watch the entire debate. I didn't think I could stomach it, and having now watched segments and read some livestream commentary, I can see why. It seems to have been a zoo, and not in a good way. It was just odd.
Tulsi displayed her usual gravitas. I think she did very well in the chaotic environment. Using the small amount of time she had, she drew attention to her campaign in a good way.
I posted this in the other thread about the debate, but I'll put it here, too. Video compilation of Tulsi Gabbard's performance in the first debate:
"Don't go back to sleep ... Don't go back to sleep ... Don't go back to sleep."

"If you want revolution, be it."

"This insanity must end." - Gabbard
she made the most of it!
and the people responded.
something hopeful,for a change.
presidential
Are you saying she was.... presidential?

Why, yes ...
I think the more the American public can see and hear her, the more they'll see it, too. Obviously, not everyone will agree with her politics, but on the other hand, she seems to have a cross-over appeal that no other Dem candidate (except Bernie) has.

Tulsi won foreign policy, but Maddow was the real loser
She was slaughtered by Delaney, of all people, who rapid-fire stated that in his hundreds of campaign stops (who would have known he was even running?), Mueller isn't what the voters have been talking about.
Poor Rachel, after her summary execution, looked down at her notes and furiously crossed out all follow-on questions about Russia! she wouldn't be able to ask this group.
BTW: Gabbard came across as calm, composed, and rational, with a disarming sincerity. The MSNBC panel had to wait until the wrapup to do some post-game sniping -- they took a few pot shots at her "reputation", something about Assad, that didn't seem to hit anything. Tweety, during his interview, actually thanked Tulsi for taking on the Neocons, but in his usual dismissive way that he often has with younger women.
MSNBC certainly didn't win this debate, even if they picked the questions and got most of the air time.
Clown Car
Yes, Tulsi got left out with questions and time. She did the best with what she had to deal with. Yes, please, let's hear more from Bill DeBlasio?
Gee, Chuck and Rachel didn't ask Warren about how she gamed the system for decades. Yep, high cheekbones (blue eyes and blond hair?) and my Papaw and Nana and the picture on the wall in our just scrabbling to achieve a lower middle class life while I drove a white MGB to high school...
Chuck Todd: "But Tulsi, when you were 20 you said some bad shit. Explain?"
How about, "Hey Liz, how does one get paid $350K for teaching 1 Course? How do you have a multi-$million house in Cambridge, MA (flipping those houses in OK years before paid off?)? Why would Harvard celebrate you as their first Native American professor?" Well, well ?
If Warren prevails, Drumph will slaughter her in the debates, imho.

the Drumphmeister will slaughter Warren
If Warren prevails, the Drumphmeister will slaughter her in the general election. This applies to all reasonably possible Democratic tickets except Sanders/Gabbard or Gabbard/Sanders.
Mr. Truman is still right: given a choice between a pseudo-GOPper (i.e., a conservadem) and a genuine article GOPper, the American People will always choose the latter.

Thanks for post, apenultimate. I thought TG
did very well.
I'll stand by my so-called prediction of two weeks ago--subject to change, after tonight's Debate, of course--that the PtB will 'attempt' to nominate Warren (Prez) and Castro (VP).
It just makes sense (from their viewpoint), since both are mostly corporatist Dems, but, can do a good job sounding like progressives.
Remember--it was Reid, Schumer, and Patty Murray, not exactly screaming liberals, who recruited ol' Liz for her Senate seat (based on their internal polling, that she could beat Brown).
And, Castro was on FSC's short- or long-list--sorry, don't recall which. But, is a 'New Dem' in the Clinton mode. So, we know where he's coming from.
Tonight, the only three that I'll attentively listen to are Bernie, Biden and 'Mayor Pete.' (Who's rapidly losing ground, from what I'm reading.) I imagine that MP will be a very capable speaker, I've heard him, and "credit where credit's due." Too bad he's a corporatist/conservative Dem.
I could be wrong, but, expect Biden to somehow implode this evening--he's just too gaffe-prone, not to do so. I'm quite curious as to 'how' he'll handle answering questions about his most recent 'slip of the tongue.' Angry and/or defensive ain't gonna get it. (IMO)
Don't expect Bernie to directly answer any questions, unless the Moderators persist. Instead, he'll likely stick to his prepared talking points, so, we probably won't learn anything new about his views.
We literally had to brew coffee last night, in order to stay awake (listening to the Debate). So, all that I ask is that they actually 'say something' meaningful--about policy. Cut the cr*p - and the Kabuki!
[Edited sentence for syntax--deleted 'no.' Second edit--repositioned emoticon.]
Not that I'm holding my breath, or anything.

Biden
You say that like there’s danger of him being asked. You’re right of course that he’d implode. But that’s why I’m sure that’s why they’ll stay a million miles away from segregationists or his hansy problem.
Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.
Touche, Dr JC. The Moderators certainly
didn't break their necks last evening, to put Liz on the record for any of her faux pas.
Clearly, TG didn't get the same treatment from Chuck Todd. (who asked her about her LGBT views from quite some years ago, if I understand it correctly)
And, as you've pointed out--there's a plethora of 'topics' that they could question Biden about--if they only would.

I'm expecting Biden
to look out of touch with the times and out of step with the party. He'll get the softest of softball questions, respond with disturbing anecdotes about great fascists he's worked with and women that really didn't mind being fondled in public, and the press will cheer about how he dominated the debates and should start measuring for drapes in the oval office.

MSNBC wants
Warren, Biden....
They set the Lizenator up last night.
Now it Biden's turn.
Wait, Wut? Voters may have an opinion? Silly citizen..
Great news. The next "debates" will be hosted by CNN. I for one, can't wait.

From the campaign.

Just look at Amy K looking at her, at about 1:45. "Oh you silly girl, you could've been abusing your staff instead of being foolish enuf deploying to Iraq 2x. Major, smajor, I'm from Minnesota -- "where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average."
