Tuesday Open Thread ~~ Fat Tuesday Mambo

Being that tomorrow is the beginning of Lent, when all good catlicks forsake vices for the foreseeable future, today is the culmination of all the parades, music and general debauchery going on for the past month or so. It is tradition to wear a mask, so as to not be so recognizable while expressing the inner wild. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

~

~

It's difficult to describe the culture surrounding the Mardi Gras spirit... red beans and ricely yours, throw me something mister, Dixie Beer, Hurricanes, crawfish pie, po-boys, all night improv jams, floats, golden coconuts, beads and doubloons, marching bands, King cake, block parties, Krewes, Rex and Zulu parades, music and dance. Cafe Au Lait and Beignets. And all that jazz...

Wishing y'all a magic sack of gris-gris today. Good for whatever oils ya. Oh, and share whatever you like - OT.

Thanks QMS for the momentum to celebrate this time through music and dance.

Latin and Caribbean sounds were my introduction to music and dance, thanks to my parents love of dancing to its rhythms. Despite my initial sense of embarrassment as a young teenager watching my parents seductive moves to the music, I grew to love the same rhythms.

@janis b A buddy of mine was a cop and got a side gig working a Tito Puente show at a small college in Lewiston, Maine. Since I'm a fairly Large individual, he got me in on the gig as security, also. When the band showed up, I did what I almost always do-started rody-ing for the band. Grabbing speakers, amps, lights, whatever(no instruments unless asked-I Know better), and hauling stuff in. I was Much younger then, but still older than the college crowd by a decade(at Least).
The crowd had No Idea who was playing for them, and Tito Could have phoned it in and been done with it. But he and the band didn't. They Jammed the joint for more than two hours that night and did two encores, the second one to an almost empty house. When it was over and I'd helped load out, All the band members(Tito included) shook my hand and thanked me personally.
Best C-note I ever earned. Incidentally, I smoked up the horn section before the first set And at the break. And no, Tito Didn't partake.
Thanks for the impetus to stroll down memory lane!

Tito Puente performing at the end to an almost empty audience. That sounds to have been both disheartening and enjoyable. Thanks for the reflection.

And actually, feels pretty good. I like waking up this early and writing. It helps me. No work today on the actual story, but got a few good diary pages written, which is good.

Have to leave today to see my therapist. He helps, don't get me wrong, but I hate having to travel in the cold. At the same time, it also makes the choice to go a bit more meaningful. I have to push myself to do the right thing.

Our society is so obsessed with not causing upset, and respecting feelings that we won't do what has to be done to heal the wounds. I'm realizing it with my own therapy. Some day we're going to learn that if the entire rest of the world is made up of psycho jerks... maybe the psycho jerk isn't the rest of the world.

And a random Pinball theme which makes me happy.

@detroitmechworks
Morning Detroit!

In the beginning, masks worn during Mardi Gras allowed wearers to escape society and class constraints. When wearing a mask, carnival goers were free to be whomever they wanted to be, and mingle with whatever class they desired to mingle with. However, they were also considered to be a diversion for poor people, and women who wore masks had their reputation questioned.

good luck

I'd think that respecting feelings wouldn't cause upset. Thanks for the thought that no matter how many psycho jerks there are in the world, it doesn’t define the world.

'cause I don't want to live on this planet anymore, people are too cruel. I hate this place, where I live. Dawgs scream and cry, mean people suck. People scream and cry, mean dawgs suck. Life goes on... experts agree everything in the middle and above is fine. I am not celebrating, I am contemplating the inanity of hamster wheels. At least this made me smile for a while:

Science-fiction, so very bad it is funny good. All hail Robot John.

Yesterday Always Talking Man included us in his Aaron Sorkin way, something about being careful there is a lot of helicopter action in the area... searching. I remember asking "Do I look like them?", the ones being looked for, and he said no I am fine but watch out. whew

A couple of days ago, Robert from the bridge said "good morning" to my neighbor as we passed along the walkway, and we just about fell over in surprise. Right on I love our homeless people, they are my people. I wish I had a house to give them. Some other young homeless guy shoveled all the sand off the River Park wheelchair access path, and he cut up the big logs with his chainsaw for easy removal. Told us he liked the work and didn't like being homeless because it gave him "a bad name." I thanked him, that is all I have to give. thanks

The professionals with clipboards were upset to see all the work he had done while the "due to FLOODED" trail was closed I'm sure, because now how do they get their disaster moneys? Someone called the cops to shoo him away, that's our D-Value eXperience in Cloverdale. Move along, now give us more money. Million$ pour in to keep the wheels spinning, keep the landlords fat and happy. CORRUPT

The local D-Value brainwashing meeting is all about The Electoral College this month, as if it matters at all. As if Clinton were President things would be so different. Yeah, let's party why not. titanic

It's been ten days since I had that toothache > jaw pain > eyeball stabbing episode from my back molar. For two full days the gland on that side was a little swollen and extremely tender. It hurt to swallow, much less chew anything beforehand. wah

In the middle of all that while I was feeling much pain, I started really seriously looking at Dentist options, there is one right around the corner that could not be easier. But instead, what I did was decide that it's not worth the money, and this is just a part of dying. It's the same thinking like when I junked my car, at some point the money won't help, it's too far gone. And so am I too far gone, lacking desire to keep going for many more years. whats the point

Right after I had that thought, and stopped worrying about "fixing" my face with money, the pain started to go away. Like, as soon as I stopped resisting and started accepting, then the healing began apace. Today I cannot believe I am chomping on chips and everything like before. The old filling still looks nasty but it no longer gives me pain. Perhaps the nerve went dead, thank you? Maybe prayer does work, so there? I did meditate quite a bit, visualizing the thing in my jaw becoming less of me, getting smaller in size and different colors...? lol woo "There are four lights." moving from topic to topic

A brisk 23 this AM at Trade Day. Very few vendors or shoppers. Got in a visit with an old buddy who showed up, and most of the usual suspects were there. After all the rain it is nice to see the sun, and in reality we've had a very mild winter. No snow (so far). The blizzard of '93 hit on March 13.

I noticed some pear trees in bloom that got bit, but daffodils and other blooms seem fine this morning. One more cold night before warming and rain again.

I like the woods in winter, and been spending a fair amount of time in the forest. It will soon green up and snakes, ticks, and chiggers will become pests. It is almost time to check out "the Pocket" a natural wildflower holler on Pigeon Mountain.

I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud (Daffodils)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed- and gazed- but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth

Hope you all dance with the daffodils...have a great day.

I missed the pre-Lent party again being that today is Fat Tuesday and I'm nowhere near the festivities. Once again I'm just in time for the penance portion of this tradition. Forty days seems to be the important number in all this. Forty days of wandering around in the desert, forty days of fasting, forty days of battling the devil, forty days of flooding for Noah, if you live in Nineveh....forty days to decide to repent or be destroyed. Whew, big stuff.

Great music all same. The whole "masked and crazy" bit, across the centuries, makes one wonder about the dissonance and disconnect buried in the origins. If you have to hide who are you are from the watchers, do you also hide it from yourself? Makes one suspect that it was healthier without the masks, as the misguided worship, respect, and reverence, of Saturnalia. OTOH, were the masks actually ineffective, simply intended to provide plausible deniability to otherwise open secrets. Too early for all that, I suspect. Gotta love this beat -

Staffing changes proposed in response to low district enrollment

One specific item, which brought potential staffing changes to the table, received a large chunk of public comment, primarily from teachers in the district. During the meeting, no action was taken regarding the suggestions made — the item was solely to receive board direction. Based on board feedback, the district was directed to make cuts based on attrition rather than issuing pink slips, to have combination classes, while also cutting 1.5 full-time employees (FTE).

Following enrollment increases in 2016, 2017 and 2018, the district experienced a 65 student enrollment drop for the 2018-19 year. According to Superintendent Jeremy Decker, the enrollment drop wasn’t due to interdistrict transfers — the 65 students moved out of Cloverdale or decided to pursue other forms of education, such as online classes.

As a response to the decrease in student enrollment, Decker presented the board with a recommendation to decrease district staff by three FTE positions.

Charter schools have killed California public education thinking dead. This is how administration operates, money money money per head, just like the prison system. It's their job. I vote we get rid of Decker's position, and keep 3 teachers while also getting rid of the stupidly extravagant expense of vape detection. Who gets that contract? I don't know, but the problem is obvious. Put values on the ballot, and this is what you get in California. Good old pieces of shit running the place in to the ground. good luck

Our local school student population has been declining for years. The teachers union won't give an inch. Student class size per teacher has gone down to the lowest in the state. So what do they propose? Advertising to parents from out-of-district to send their kids here. For a set fee, which is half of what we pay for ours. To justify their contracts. Ain't happening Something needs to give.

I find it interesting that even now, almost a day after the poll went up, votes (in the last hour) are still coming in at the rate of 56% Bernie. I would have expected pure freeping to happen in pulses, not as a sustained percentage.

LOL yeah I'd say 47k out of 86k is a pretty robotic sustained rate of freep for one poll. Way to go BernBots! Make markos richer why not, make his mailing list biglier, I mean yuge. Who wants to bet there will be more candidates added, or maybe kos will end the polling just like last time. Exactly. I got 25 cents on him taking his ball and going bulemic again.

What voters care enough to freep any poll, to jump through those hoops, that is the question. And the answer is Bernie supporters, sweet lovely berners bent on getting what they were robbed of in '16.

And definitely CT. I mean sure... some of the things in that list are definitely true and others bear investigation (lol, right). But overall this was meant as a joke. I certainly wouldn't be using it a piece of evidence in an argument.

Insofar as "right wing", that's a certainty. If you want to know what's wrong with team Blue it's going to be team Red that tells you... and vice versa. Both teams are abysmal at introspection.

Hi, nice to see you again. I missed you and was wondering about you. Hope all is well in your home. I can't get used to living in Germany. Huge culture shock to me. ARD is making political manipulations with their massive amounts of politically intended 'Crime Thrillers'. Can't stand it and think we have something similar going on with regards to psychoiogical manipulation via the main stream TV media especially ARD. Luckily there is quite nice coverage on the regional channels and some others with (st least for me) very good documentaries. Helps me to learn about Germany's last fifty years and more.

The most dangerous foreign policy decision of the Trump administration—and I know this is saying a lot—is its decision to share sensitive nuclear technology with Saudi Arabia and authorize U.S. companies to build nuclear reactors in that country....

The drive to build nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia is led by the half-wit son-in-law of the president, Jared Kushner, who met Tuesday with Salman in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, to discuss “ways to improve the condition of the entire region through economic investment,” according to the White House...

Salman, whose psychopathic traits remind me of Saddam Hussein, is widely believed to have ordered the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018. He has imprisoned dissidents, brutally ousted rivals, seized over $100 billion in extortion money from kidnapped and tortured members of the royal family and instilled a level of fear and terror inside the kingdom, always a repressive society, unrivaled in its modern history....

There is too much in there. Worth a full read, if you can make it.

Great topic. Never been but want to. Was talking about New Orleans yesterday and all the food I'd like to eat while there. This peaked my curiosity and so I breezed through the menus of some of New Orleans eateries and I'm salivating already!

Crispy Pork belly with braised collards, cornbread pudding, sautéed mushroom and orange bacon demi

Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich with fontina, caper aioli, & pickles

Hot Fried Quail, smothered green beans, spiced honey

Duck confit, flatbread with bacon jam

Doberge Layer Cake, salted caramel, peanut butter, bacon

Key lime chiffon cake with poppyseed ice cream

@QMS Everything but the oysters anyway; I think I only managed to eat about four before I called it quits.

@Daenerys
flied chickens, but it doesn't occur just now
once got a 50 pound sack of oysters on the side of the road down on the bayou for $15
brought it uptown, made oyster stew, omelets, fried, baked, on the half shell, bbq'ed casseroles and every which way. fed the neighborhood for a week. guess I got my fill, cause it's a rare treat nowadays.
Cheers!

@QMS There is a saying that really tickled me about them slimy tasty devils (raw). It hangs on the odd sign in restaurants along the Gulf Coast, and the chain Po' Folks had it among dozens of country sayings they used on their menu.

"The first man that ate a raw oyster, was a brave man."

For me it turned out to be another sushi moment. When you find out this poor maligned food item has been wrongfully disparaged. Followed by, what took me so long!?! Then proceeding to make up for lost time.

Raw fish, or lightly 'cooked' in lime, is one of my very favourites.

The expression Laissez les bons temps rouler (alternatively Laissez le bon temps rouler, Laisser les bons temps rouler and Laisser le bon temps rouler, French pronunciation: [lɛse le bɔ̃ tɑ̃ ʁule]) is a Cajun French phrase. The phrase in its, French / Cajun French, form is a calque of the English phrase "let the good times roll"; that is to say that it is a "loan translation", a "word for word" translation of the English phrase into, French / Cajun French.

This phrase is often mentioned in Louisiana and around the Gulf Coast where Mardi Gras is celebrated. It is well known touristically around the United States from television and radio.[1]

It is not an expression used in other French-speaking countries.

Don't know about Mardi Gras Mambo, but, if you're into dirty dancing--and, given the right dance partner, who among us is not?---

Sorry to be so late to the thread. I post Let the Good Times Roll every year for Mardi Gras.

I wore beads to work today, heh.

Here is my favorite band that I saw in New Orleans:

They are absolutely amazing live too. I wasn't there during Mardi Gras, but I still had a blast. I hope to take my husband there some day before it sinks into the gulf of Mexico. I need to pick up one of those signs they have everywhere that says "Be nice or leave" for my future bakery.

Was looking for a good paczki, but the ones I looked at yesterday had way too many carbs--112 grams of carbs each! Eep! Shok

Cheers!

Is that like a polish king cake?

@QMS
a king cake is a sweet dough round loaf with a hole in the middle. Traditionally the hosts of the Mardi Gras party serve a slice to all of the guests (after a sumptuous meal). Hidden within the cake is a small icon of a king. Whom so ever gets the king in their slice of cake is responsible to buy the next year's cake. It becomes a bond / grouping thing. Almost tribal in it's origins. Case ya didn't know. Fun stuff.

@QMS @QMS It's a Polish pastry, basically a fatter, overstuffed bismark. People used to make them as a way to use up all the butter, sugar, eggs, etc. they had lying around before Lent. Smile
