Transgender Day of Remembrance - 2015

Bleeding

The blood runs thin
In the dark settings
the dangerous regions
where the ragged people
attempt to assemble themselves
people building meaningful identities
unwanted anywhere uptown
And when the blood spills
into the bleek gutters and rickety dwellings
those identities are so often
then erased
stolen in the night
discarded
just like the bodies of the people
who strove to own them

On this day we remember those lost souls. We remember their names, and try to summon memories of those who chose them.

Eighty-seven is their number this year. All but one murdered, and that one killed in a terrible misunderstanding. Many were killed by one shot to the head...what some might label "assassinated." We reveal the shortcomings of this society...and some think we need to absorb this horrible cost for doing so.

But killing us cannot absolve you of your sins. You need to look elsewhere for that...perhaps inside your own self.

They came from nine countries. We know there are many whose names belong on this list, but were not reported...from Africa, China, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico...we try to live wherever there are people. If those people would only let us...
