Those Wacky Walloons: Belgium saves Europe from Corporate Coup

I didn't dare to hope, but it seems it has actually happened: CETA is dead. The 'Trade' agreement between Canada and the EU has foundered on resistance by s single group within a single EU nation, the Belgian region of Wallonia blocked the country's acquiescence to the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, a pact between Canada and the EU which would subject EU countries and Canada to devastating financial penalties meted out by an unaccountable panel of corporate cronies using the dreaded ISDS.
The main Canadian negotiator, International Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland, stormed out in frustration, giving up on sneaking the destruction of democratic self-determination through in time for the upcoming EU-Canada summit:

"It's become evident for me, for Canada, that the European Union isn't capable now to have an international treaty even with a country that has very European values like Canada. And even with a country so nice, with a lot of patience like Canada."
"I've worked very, very hard, but I think it's impossible," the minister said, reflecting on the months of travel and lobbying across Europe she's invested personally in trying to garner enough support, working in tandem with her EU trade counterpart, Cecilia Malmstrom.

"We have decided to return home. I am very sad. It is emotional for me," she told reporters. "The only good thing I can say is that tomorrow morning I will be at home with my three kids."

While it is unclear whether she is ignorant, or evil, or both, I am concerned for the well-being of children in the care of a rapacious tool of corporate lobbyists.

The failure of the negotiation hinged on the infamous Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system which allows Canadian or European companies, or hedge funds that buy them, to extort large sums from governments if they can convince a group of private arbitrators in secret proceedings that some act or lack of action by the government has impinged on their imagined future profits.

CETA could be blocked due to an earlier ruling that required unanimous consent from all EU countries for the 'trade' deal, as well as accords between regional factions in Belgium that gave more autonomy to the regions. Ironically this was mostly accomplished by the Flemish Nationalists, who strongly supported CETA and now regret Wallonia's autonomy:

For decades, Flemish nationalists have torn Belgium apart, shifting increasing powers to the country’s regions. Now, they are stuck in a federal government immobilized and embarrassed by those very regional powers they fought so hard to win.

“It’s pretty embarrassing,” said Carl Devos, politics professor at Ghent University. “If you advocate rights for regions … you can’t just say those rights then need to be violated.”

The New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), Belgium’s largest party and Flemish-nationalist powerhouse, is particularly haunted by Wallonia’s obstruction over the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with Canada. The party wields the power at the federal level but can’t force the southern region to abide by its wishes.

So at this point, it is clear that the rhetoric of regional autonomy and national self-determination has come back to haunt those who employed it cynically while attempting to subjugate it to corporate control.

“Their resistance is putting the [French-speaking] Socialist Party on the map internationally — but above all, they need to get back on the map in Wallonia,” said Sinardet.

Rallying against multinationals will not hurt their prospects. Wallonia has clashed with multinationals, as their industry declined over the decades and corporate cut-backs sparked job losses.

Wallonia’s rebellion is welcomed by a political minority in Flanders too.

“If the N-VA has to choose the side of the multinationals’ lobby and other interests, they take the multinationals’ side,” the opposition’s Flemish Socialists’ president John Crombez said, raging against the CETA deal.
“People pleading for the importance of trade could be right, but that’s really not the point. It’s the clauses,” Crombez said about CETA’s mechanisms for companies to sue governments. “Get those clauses out if you’re really serious about trade.”

Hope it stays dead. Maybe it will help to usher in an end to this corporate giveaway.

Was on display in Spain, where the government was forced by the bankster cartel to impose austerity measures to pay off the gambling debts of foreign banks. One of these measures was the elimination of subsidies for solar energy. A foreign investor recognized the opportunity for ISDS hijinx, bought a cheap little solar company, and won a huge judgement against Spain to get the subsidy money.

as destructive as Globalized Finance and any defeat for them is at least a temporary victory for the people.

Come to think of it, the Sicilian Mafia has not been the destabilizing force international finance has been either.

I am afraid Obama will get his TPP during the lame duck period. Maybe an Asian country or two will stop this assault also.

She doesn't care about hatred when she has power:

Secret service agent passing her in the hall, "Good morning, ma'am," Hillary, "Fuck you."

And boy, does she love bloodshed (http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2016/10/200pm-water-cooler-10212016.html ).
“the entire Clinton campaign looks to me like it’s laying the groundwork for war; not only Clinton’s known hawkishness and propensity for fomenting war (Iraq, Libya, Honduras), but demonizing Putin, and framing opponents as traitors as a prelude to suppressing any domestic opposition.

“Washington’s foreign policy elite breaks with Obama over Syrian bloodshed” [WaPo]. “The Republicans and Democrats who make up the foreign policy elite are laying the groundwork for a more assertive American foreign policy, via a flurry of reports shaped by officials who are likely to play senior roles in a potential Clinton White House.” The headline is a little ambiguous, but I take it to mean that the elite wants more bloodshed."

She's been not only demonizing Putin, for everything, but framing her opponents as traitors! Pray for Trump to win, whether you like him personally or not. The polls are rigged and Obama and Michelle sound pretty desperate, so there may still be a chance.

The rest are all Fast-Tracked, if the illegal and unconstitutional TPP passes, and with the Clinton's notorious vindictiveness, members of Congress may be literally taking their lives in their hands by refusing to betray their country in passing these further corporate coups. It'll come down to their courage and patriotism - essentially upon how many Progressives/Berners/Greens get in down-ticket.

Regarding the disgusting display of the Canadian Corporate Representative over the foiling of the CETA coup: Harper may have been too universally detested to have been again plausibly cheated into the Prime Minister's Nether Orifice Office again, but he broke his promise of resigning 'if the votes weren't there', mined government with his psychopathic appointments before leaving the public office he sullied and betrayed - and the Liberals seem to be acting as placeholders... Harper, btw, refused to allow any environmental protections in that agreement - and will need a spit barrier if ever he appears in public again.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Her statements are pure manipulation to make the other negotiators and the countries they represent feel guilty and less informed. the statements are also pure paternalism. Raise your hand if a parent ever said something to you along the lines of "You are breaking my heart." She has learned the lessons well from the US.

Really? They just made me nauseous and showed her colours as a psychopathic corporate stooge and obviously one of Harper's personal appointments in poisoning the well. Monsanto trolls always try that sort of obnoxious nonsense, and are mentally/ethically incapable of understanding what they're revealing themselves to be.

Lol, maybe they should be known as our bettors, as they're betting that our civilizations/democracies, environmental and human health and lives along with life itself/oxygen production on the planet aren't worth anything like what they'll drain out in bleeding us dry and poisoning/working/starving/polluting us to death.

Thank you Belgium. We must do the same with the TPP.
