... Senate, but lacks funding.

Imagine a 300-mile trail from San Francisco Bay to Humboldt Bay taking hikers, bicycle and horseback riders through a stunning North Coast river canyon and old growth redwood forests.

It would cost untold millions of dollars and won’t come soon, but the idea for what’s called the Great Redwood Trail is embodied in state Sen. Mike McGuire’s bill, which would also abolish a debt-ridden public agency and put commuter train operator Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit in charge of railroad freight service in its two counties.

The buzz is all about a trail along railroad tracks through some territory most people have never seen and which advocates are likening to the 210-mile John Muir Trail through the Sierra Nevada.

Imagine homes for the homeless? NOPE please proceed governor, public/private selloff until death do us part. Kick granny when she's in the ditch. Outta sight, outta mind. Instead, show a picture of the empty train station in Cloverdale now that the tent people have all been "moved along" to "somewhere else". D-Values on the ballot have consequences.

good luck

@eyo
pondering the fact that there is an existing freight run from Napa to Windsor, like, What's the route and what the heck do they haul?

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

@enhydra lutris it was a BFD in 2011.

John Williams, Northwestern Pacific Railroad Co. president, said the freight trains will transport agricultural products, including feed grain for chicken and dairy cow farms in the Petaluma area, as well as lumber, laminated wood products and, in due course, wine.

I kinda regret voting SMART all those years. The CEOs make a killing, that stinks. PU. Also, SMART decided to lay new track that freight cars don't fit on, just the commuter boxes that go from Santa Rosa to San Rafael, or maybe they reach Larkspur by now. "Concessions" are run by disabled, if I recall correctly. Public/private contract of course, there always has to be some "program" to get "funded", always a commerce company, never a collective. blech

"Do you see a way out of this?" --Lookout, The Weekly Watch

See that bummer comment I made up there about The Redwood Trail? To answer Lookout, why yes, yes I do "see a way out of this" and that way is to build campgrounds with facilities the whole way along, and to make them free for the homeless but make tourists pay a lot, enough to cover facilities maintenance, clean water, showers, toilets. NO private investment, NO non-profit bullshit either.

Worker co-operatives can run the services, etc.. In fact there already exists a lot of "bike repair" shops in the homeless camps, and hair cutters, and delivery people, and medics, and everything. No stinking program can replace the kind of survivor spirit that lives in the tent camps of California.

The California Conservation Corps should be expanded to do this right now, all the politicians said it's a crisis before the primary. Declaring it a crisis usually means it gets money, but no lobbyist is paying to build campgrounds or cheap shelters that's for sure. Embed health services in every camp, build a 300 mile solar powered grid, water catchment systems, community gardens, food forests, etc.. Low tech development for the win. Disarm the California Sheriffs and make it a secure weapons free zone. 300 miles of peace and prosperity for all, especially wildlife. Reduce, reduce, reduce, human footprints.

What are some kind words I could send to my rep McGuire, the guy who spent hours and hours across many different departments in Sacramento arranging unanimous support for this tourist trail bill? "Please put the basic needs of your constituents first?" I don't think that would penetrate, it has to make money somehow, and not benefit us useless eaters. meh

What about: "Please put the basic needs of your constituents first?" and we won't sue you personally for all of the costs incurred by all of your victims by your not doing so?

Though I suppose that wouldn't be legal and he'd never have the money to cover all those costs of all of those stunted and ruined lives anyway... I wonder if his donors could be sued... or held up at pitchfork-point.

Because it's really been a positive aspect to my life the last couple months. It's really helping me gain a bit of perspective, which is helping with my writing as well.

Plus, it's good old fashioned hard physical labor. Not too much, and not too long, but work that is in the pursuit of an eventual goal. I think that kind of daily achievement is something that far too many of my fellows are missing. They get lost in trying to just live another day and lose track of the horizon.

@enhydra lutris So it's never too late. Smile

Honestly, the thing I'm loving the most is just the feeling of lying in bed happily exhausted and clean after the workout. That feeling of knowing that you have succeeded just a little for the day is incredibly wonderful. (I'm starting to get why Gymnasiums were so popular with the Greeks. The social part is incredibly helpful as well.)

@Ellen North There's a lot of negative out there, and I have to laugh about how taking a historical point of view has also greatly improved my mental health.

Reading philosophy has also helped a lot, because the mental exercise also does a world of good. I honestly feel like I've gotten back onto a path I left behind a long time ago to chase dreams that were not my own. (Was recently given a Signed copy of the History of the Black Panthers by Bobby Seale, and that is giving me a great deal of insight into the workings of the US government. Then I read a little Roman Propaganda... and laugh my head off...)

Just feels right. And this point I've found something that I love. (Yes, I'm going to promote my American Empire Series, and my Judo because it's Fun, and I love it.)

So, thanks - and congrats on having both found and made a path to sanity.

Maybe we'll (meaning me, lol,) follow not only your essays but follow you there, and some of us (see previous interjection) become more positive as well; keep checking your good karma rating to see when it passes roof level!

To see what condition my condition was in. Always deserves a hat tip... folks if you don't know the song, do check it out... before Kenny Rogers went country and pop, he almost got psychedelic. There are a few versions of it at utube. This has good lead guitar w/wahwah. I saw them do it on TV a few times as a kid when it was a hit, my year-older bro and I loved it. A few sample lines... not connected as shown, just 5 great ones from the song...

a) woke up this morning with the sundown shinin' in
b) Found my mind in a brown paper bag
c) Tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high
d) Had my foot on the gas as I left the road
e) Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
