Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue
Something/Someone Old
Call out the instigators...
We've got to get together sooner or later.
Or as someone put it when I was a young woman, "If it's not love, then it's the bomb the bomb the bomb the bomb the bomb the bomb the bomb that will bring us together."
It sounds better in context.
Something New
One of my life partners and I have been doing dual commentary videos of our gaming. The game we're playing is Darkest Dungeon by a company called Red Hook. This is the most positive and fun "new" thing I've come across, though I say it myself.
There is a technical issue for the first couple minutes of the video so you can't hear me, but I come in at 1:51.
The music I chose for an accompaniment is:
The Pogues--"Turkish Song of the Damned"
The Pogues--"If I Should Fall From Grace With God"
The Dropkick Murphys--"Take 'Em Down"
Steve n Seagulls covering AC/DC--"Thunderstruck"
I hope you get as much pleasure out of it as we did!
Something Borrowed
Turns out Tom Petty did a cover of Thunderclap Newman. I never knew that!
Wow, what a great video. So cool to see them all enjoying themselves, playing/working.
Something Blue
I didn't know any octopi were blue. Cool creatures, by the way. Very smart, apparently.
Unfortunately (for us) this guy is also very, very venomous. His (or her) venom is 1,000 times more deadly than cyanide.
One thing that's particularly cool about this animal is that its blue rings apparently appear as a warning sign when it feels threatened. Most of the time, it hides in crevices in coral and among shells; it only comes out when it's looking for food or a mate. Unlike my neighbors the water moccasins, it doesn't just get pissed off and come after you for no particular reason; it's not an aggressive being. But if it feels threatened, you're pretty much dead. It has enough venom to kill 26 humans within minutes.
I'm getting this from the Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit I used to donate to, since it's obvious the oceans are essential to our lives--and anyway, having grown up on the beach, the ocean was my neighbor too.

I'd both really like to see this animal--and really like NOT to see it! Since it lives in the Pacific, I'll probably never see it in person. And that may be best all around.

Good morning...
Hope all is well with you and yours as the pandemic continues.
I've been spending a lot of time outdoors. The garden is kicking and and we're eating from it everyday. Had to replant tomatoes yesterday, the first planting had been stunted from cool night temperatures.
I'm having machinery issues this spring, but will eventually get them back up and running. I'm glad you've found some entertainment by gaming. We continue to stay home and find there is plenty to do just to keep things going. However it is odd not seeing friends and playing music, telling jokes, and so on.
One mountain away, Sand Mountain, is well known for its shape note singing tradition. I bet they are missing their Sunday sing today. It continues much the same as this '42 recording of "Present Joys"
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szuiPWgbN6I]
Recorded in 1942 by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress.
It is powerful to be in the open floor Churches with the four singing parts each standing along one of the four walls facing each other. Really a primal feel. I saw one study of the accelerated COVID spread at choir practice.
Well all the best!

I used to be very interested in Appalachian culture
Mr. Lomax was one of my heroes.
There was also a series of books about Appalachian culture I loved called Foxfire, but it's been a long time since I paid attention to them. Apparently, something pretty terrible happened to the project in the 90s, but it survived, mainly because a lot of students who had been victims of a particular teacher's pedophilia saw the project as *theirs,* not the teacher's, and kept it going.

I love it when homo sapiens manages to see a broader view even when in serious pain. It's the quality that has kept us alive for this long, IMO.

I knew Eliot
...and loved his Foxfire project. It continues https://www.foxfire.org/ , but was mortally wounded with Eliot's conviction

His work really influenced my teaching method of learning by doing.
He wrote a piece in the 90's comparing schools and prisons...

Sad story of a great project.

I'm so sorry.

I'm glad this still goes on.
Or, well, *has* been going on, up until the last couple of months.

People come from around the world
to attend these community sings. There is a big on here on Lookout Mt once a year in a church above Collinsville.

I guess this would have been the 117th gathering there but it has been canceled.
This area is home to lots of music from church to bluegrass to folk and so on.

How awesome!
I'm afraid my source for this stuff was somewhat less impressive:

Wow. That's awesome.
Thank you so much! If I'd ever heard it, I don't remember and I think I would.
That's Mark Almond of the Almond Brothers Band, right?

different almond
It is hyphenated Mark-Almond.
Cheers.

Good morning CSTMS. I've seen pics and flics of that
octopus before. It turns out that octopi can do all kinds of fantastic shit with their skin, violets, bright reds, etc as well as being masters of camouflage. In addition, they are all venomous, it is all a question of degree. Only one species, so far as we know, possesses venom that will harm humans. They're also damn intelligent too, and generally very interesting critters.
Interesting video with the music behind the game. I've indulged in gaming much, partly time constraints, partly my o/s.
be well, have fun and have a good one.

Is the blue-ringed octopus the octopus that can hurt us
or did I get it wrong?
Thanks for watching our gaming video. Something about "Take 'Em Down" playing in the background while we battle cthuloid pig monsters fit frighteningly well!

Blue ringed and, iirc, others of his species, maybe 3 total,
blue lined is one too, again, I think.

Good morning!
It is still morning (barely).
How are y'all today?
