Some nature photography from this week
Beaver Lake Nature Center on Sunday April, 24th. It was an evening visit and it was overcast...
The deer at Beaver Lake are so habituated to people that they barely pay attention to you. An ear may point in your direction and the tail may go up...
This Ruffed Grouse wasn't as domesticated as the one that used to be on this particular trail.
First warbler of the season. Yellow-rumped. Way up in the trees and in bad light...
I saw an owl too, but only as it was flying into the woods. It had been calling very loudly the whole time I was there.
Hamlin Marsh Wildlife Management Area, April 27th, 2016. Evening visit with clear skies.
My second life bird of the year at Hamlin, Hermit Thrush. Even with no leave, it's still pretty dark in the woods in the evening...
This was shot between two trees at long range...
Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Tiny bird that stays way up in the trees and never stops moving...
Several waterfowl species. Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Wood Duck, American Wigeon, and the ever present Canada Geese.
It's really great having an accessible blind two minutes from your house...
It's amazing what Lightroom can pull out of a backlit photo...

Beautiful shots of the Wood Ducks and Canada Goose
But the one I adore is the one of the Blue Jay. LOVE those birds, and all their relatives. (Scrub Jays out west are my absolute favorite bird...)
Thank you so much for the pictures, They're beautiful.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
western jay
I though I had a shot of a western jay. Seek and ye shall find. Not the clearest shot in the world, but a pretty bird.

Stellar's Jay... they're fun.
Sometime's you'll be walking down the street and you'll hear what sounds like a Red-Shoulder Hawk coming from the bushes...
You look over, and there's this little bird doing a killer impression of a Hawk's cry. (Only way you can tell the difference is that Red Shoulder will always call 5-10 times, while a Stellar usually quits after 3-6)
Actually the species I like though is the Western Scrub Jay. (Don't scramble for a photo... I LOVE seeing Stellar's too!)
Edited to relay an anecdote about birds.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
great pics
Thanks for sharing your photos. Nature speaks loudly if we listen.
Speaking of jays dmw, how 'bout this yucatan jay?
And one more tropical ... the motmot

Gorgeous Bird...
Don't know what it is about the Corvids I adore so much.
I know that people used to keep them as pets, but from what I understand they were more like cats than dogs...
You raised em, gave em food, and they came and went as they pleased, but occasionally were affectionate.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Great images

Great shots.
You must have a loooong lens on that camera. What state are you in?
I walk daily at a local wooded park in CT. The Great Blue Herons have showed up. But they spook easily. I'd need one of those tele lens to get a shot.

I'm in NY
Hamlin Marsh, which used to be called Clay Marsh, has been a DEC Wildlife Management Area since the 1970s. Before that it was mainly used for muck farming. Beaver Lake Nature Center is owned by Onondaga County and run by the parks department. It's a 670 acre piece of land that was protected by a Judge from Syracuse in the '20s and '30s. It was purchased after he died by a couple that continued to protect it. Most of the land was purchased with state money in the '60s and it became a county park in the '70s. The Republicans who had the foresight to buy this land and establish the park would be called Communists by todays Rethugs.
My lens is a Sigma 150-500mm APO DG OS HSM F5-6.3. A now discontinued lens... The lens weighs about 4 lbs, the camera another two, and I'm often holding it above my head...

Beautiful! I swear, that's more clear than if I saw them in
person. Love them all!

Nice work
We have mule deer here, they come almost into town. It's amazing how they can blend into the desert landscape. The first thing you see is their eyes...and then the ears. Unless they run, of course.
Stay on track. Stay in lane. Don't throw rocks.
Great yellow-rumped pix
I have not seen one here yet. But I do have a pair of slate-colored juncos building a nest on one of my gutter spouts! Prefer them to phoebes.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Nice Ruby Crowned Kinglet photo
Hard to catch the crown in those guys.
Thanks again for sharing.
Lovely shots! Thrushes and warblers always make me smile.
