Some Devices Incapable of Exploding; Others Not Analyzed

I remarked yesterday that it would be interesting to know if those bombs were even capable of exploding. It just seemed whacky that none had ever gone off. Especially being handled by the post office.

Some Devices Incapable of Exploding; Others Not Analyzed

A nationwide manhunt is underway for the culprit or culprits responsible for targeting critics of President Donald Trump with crudely made mail bombs -- some of which investigators say were so flawed were incapable of detonating.

As of Thursday evening -- several days after the first device was found at the New York home of billionaire George Soros -- there were still no leads on a suspect in the case. It also remains unclear if their builder intended for them to actually explode or were part of some politically motivated hoax.

Hours after authorities found devices addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden and one to actor Robert De Niro Thursday, investigators revealed the devices examined so far were poorly made.
There are no solid leads on a potential suspect or suspect at this point, multiple officials briefed on the investigation said Thursday afternoon. And it's unclear whether the plotter intended for the bombs to actually explode, or if they were sent as part of a menacing political hoax.

*

According to sources, the explosive devices were made from PVC pipe and contained a timer (likely a digital alarm clock) to set off the detonator. The powder contained in the bombs comes from pyrotechnics. X-rays show there was likely shrapnel inside the PVC pipe, law enforcement officials say.

Officials in several states have described the devices as live explosives, and a number of senior bomb technicians briefed on the probes said they all had the needed components to detonate successfully.

It’s hilarious that they all had Debbie Washerwoman-Schitz return address on all of them.

I just can’t figure where why De Niro figures in.

@ovals49 Could it be the same people who wrote the Russia, Russia, Russia script?

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy

@gulfgal98

If you look like victims, most people would not suspect you of being the perpetrators. However, the fact that many of the devices were not operational suggests that the perpetrators were insuring that none of the targets were to be hurt. And who would put timers on mail bombs anyway? Perhaps third graders. Aren’t most mail bombs designed to trigger when the package is opened? And to have the correct postage? Or to be delivered by courier, but with postage affixed for the photo op sure to follow after the bomb doesn’t go off?

Wasn’t there some potentially embarrassing testimony on the Hill that day that needed a quick and dirty distraction?

saying at this point? I'd be curious. Maybe gjohnsit or Snoopy can do a roundup for us.

This whole thing just seems more and more in line with the rickety, rinky-dink Russiagate and related stuff that just doesn't stand up at all.

To save face I think they're going to bury this whole thing as fast as possible.

Another question: anybody have any evidence of them actually trying to fundraise off of this?

@Mark from Queens

This and just about everything else you can imagine. Every diary on the front page has a link to a "can you just give $1 for this ... or so we can do this ...

I've seen a few people linking this to Russia Gate. But then that happens in just about every diary there no matter what the topic is. Well except for the pootie diaries. The cats and dawgs seem pretty safe from Russian interference.

there was a terrorist who voted for Trump, although he had a bit of help with the terrorist part.

In many cases, agents will seek out people who have somehow demonstrated radical views, and then coax them into plotting an act of terrorism — often providing weapons and money. Before the suspects can carry out their plans, though, they're arrested.

But critics say that the FBI's tactics serve to entrap only individuals who would never have committed any violence without the government's instigation.

"They're manufacturing terrorism cases," Michael German, a former undercover agent with the FBI who now researches national-security law at New York University's Brennan Center for Justice, told The Times. "These people are five steps away from being a danger to the United States."

Cue the arrest of the patsy in 3...2...1....

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

and the Seminole casinos, a prior arrest involving explosive devices and a Democratic voting history emerging in connection with the suspect. It seems that nothing is simple or straight forward when it comes to American political theatre and home grown terrorism. But I think it’s always a good idea to start from the premise that what you hear about any big event as the story breaks is at least incomplete, if not completely false. The MSM is not here to deliver the truth for us, it’s here to help sell narratives that serve the interests of those in power.

So several years ago, I learned the hard way how tirelessly our USPS works to keep us all safe from the evils of terrorism. The package in question contained a manuscript which had been edited and needed to return to its owner in the self-addressed stamped Manila envelope the owner had provided. The original package, containing the manuscript and the SASE, arrived painlessly, expeditiously, with each postage stamp neatly hand canceled because the postal machinery can't deal with an envelope large enough to contain standard 8.5x11 page (nor with smaller envelopes that are more than .25" thick).

@The Breach Awaits This story will arrive on the installment plan because the above took me over half an hour to type in on the pop-up keyboard of my 666 mobile device. The keyboard is playing hide-and-seek every couple of letters and frequently absconds with the last word or two I laboriously entered.

@The Breach Awaits Also, as you can tell, I have been reading the always inspiring Hecate and brevity is out of the question. (Although I should note that Hecate is also generally quite witty.)

@The Breach Awaits And now I think I know why I have not heard back from JtC regarding my request for a mailing address for a long-overdue donation: the 666 device is a minion in the apocalyptic battle with the USPS and is eating either my messages or the responses. Or both.

@The Breach Awaits So the edited manuscript in its SASE went to sit on the shelf in the hallway for outgoing mail to await pickup with the other outgoing envelopes. Except they all went away and the manuscript envelope was left all alone. Thinking perhaps the mail carrier had mistaken it for a shy, introverted envelope, the next step was a Post-it note: "Dear carrier, this is outgoing. Please pick up.

The next day, the envelope was again alone on the shelf, with an addendum. "Not allowed to accept this type of package. Please take to Post Office." By the time the package and I arrive at the Post office, it is after hours. Luckily there is a scale in the lobby to verify postage amounts and a slot to put the envelope in. Mission accomplished. Now this was years after the time of Bush the Lesser, so it should have been clear that the outcome would not be pleasant.

@The Breach Awaits Sure enough, several days later, the envelope is back outside my door, returned to sender, with a cryptic stamped "Reason for Return: Homeland security" on its face. By this time the owner of the manuscript is getting testy. Also suspicious of explanations since the owner knows that the original delivery was painless, expeditious, etc, and also that the contents of the manuscript cannot conceivably threaten anyone's homeland security.

@The Breach Awaits So now a special trip to the post office during business hours is in order. The University "post office" window is apparently a convenience rather than an actual branch and does not want the poor envelope, which now has a major inferiority Complex. So off we go to an actual Post Office, 1.2 miles away and full of other people and their packages that are obviously threats to the Security of our Homeland.

@The Breach Awaits When the envelope and I arrive at the front of the line of suspicious people with envelopes and packages, I explain that the envelope contains a manuscript, nothing liquidfragilehazardousperishable at all, and arrived at my door painlessly,expeditiously, etc but is now apparently a Threat to Western Civilization. The clerk has heard this story before.

@The Breach Awaits The postal clerk plops the envelope on the scale. "There you go! It weighs 13.1 oz. If a package weighs over 13 oz and has postage stamps on it instead of a metered sticker, the post office can only accept said package for delivery if you bring it into an official Post Office branch and assure the official Post Office Official that there is nothing liquidfragilehazardousperishable inside. Or you can print your own postage and assure the computer the same assurance. This way our government keeps us Safe.

@The Breach Awaits
Having been a stay-at-home-mom and eBay power seller back in the dial-up days, and when the bullshit anthrax scare came about, I find your story entirely plausible and unfortunately believable.

So glad to hear our Homeland is Secure, what with all those dangerous transcripts floating around. I guess Homeland Security knows just how dangerous corrected grammatical errors truly are to our sovereignty and safety as a nation. However, as you said, too bad for the poor saps at the USPS having to repeatedly handle such nefarious and deadly content, er, um, contents.

Thanks for the laugh, and the real-life example of the absurdity.

So we deduce here that the pages that were inserted along with the manuscript into the SASE weighed just slightly more than the cover letter plus the original envelope. It makes all the difference: 12.9 oz versus 13.1 oz. Great! So glad to have figured this out! Now the testy, suspicious manuscript owner will be reunited with it. It will not have been painless or expeditious, but we will all be Safe from the excess 0.2 oz of comments.

@The Breach Awaits Those stamps the manuscript owner put on the SASE? In the process of determining that the envelope is a threat and returning to sender (sorry, letter carrier, that you are stuck carrying hazardous materials back to their sender!), the package went from the branch to a central facility for handling because processing machines etc,etc, and the workers carefully hand canceled each stamp. I know this because the postmarks show where and when canceled.

@The Breach Awaits So the clerk prints out a custom sticker showing the exact postage and probably also the debit card I used to pay, my height, and eye color. This sticker is carefully affixed over the offending anonymous postage stamps so they will know exactly who sent the 13.1 oz Manila envelope. Because you never know.

@The Breach Awaits It is at a processing center near Boston. So close... less than 50 miles from its final destination! Unfortunately, my branch clerk messed up. The metered sticker is covering up the canceled anonymous stamps properly, but there is still a rejection sticker from the envelope's initial trip. It has sharpie scribbles over it, but it should have been peeled off. Not acceptable. Back it goes. Once more into the breach, and this time everything works. The certified delivery shows just when it arrived back to its owner. And we are Safe. I wish this was fiction, but it really isn't. I have obfuscated some details for privacy and added a lot of editorial snark, but there it is. I don't think any of those "bombs" ever entered the postal system.

@Deja Thank you for your comment! I have to ask, though, if you have been posting from a 666 device. I really think Hecate is on to something.

And I would still appreciate it if someone could tell me where to mail a check to JtC. Because I do trust our intrepid postal workers to keep my hard earned dollars safer than the 666 devices.

Here's the How-To:
(Found here:https://caucus99percent.com/about_donations)

Making contributions via USPS Mail: If you don't have a PayPal account or credit card, you can now send your contributions by the USPS mail.

For the mailing address:
1 - Contact me by typing in "JtC" (without the quotes) in the "To" field of our Private Messaging system and leave a message.

2 - Or contact me by using the "Contact Us" link in the header banner at the top of every page and leave me a message. Be sure to select "administrator" in the dropdown menu.

As for the beastly device I use for posting here, it's a "smartphone". Tapping out the replies one thumb letter at a time is tedious, but I sit in front of dual monitors, with three browsers and a multitude of tabs open in each, nine hours per day for work. I've no interest in sitting at a desk during my off hours; so clumsy thumbsy it is -- autocorrect "off". (I'll have to go find hecat's post to figure out 666, though.)
