This Site is Great

All those echo chamber types at DK saying "If you don't like it -go somewhere else." Here it is. Thank You.
I was banned from them a couple years ago for warning that supporting a guy like Mike Brown, was a mistake, and a lie.
They didn't want to here it- "hear no evil" etc. I told them these lies would alienate White Allies- they didn't care.

Welcome aboard.
There are seat belts but their use is pretty much optional.

Also, I care, we care.
Ya see, I really do love people, if only they didn't get on my nerves so damn bad. sigh.

And the deal was I wasn't paying attention. I like this poster wayyyyy better than the other one.

Who needs white allies when you have 47% of the electoral vote?

I think their plan of demonizing 70% of the electorate in order to posture as superior is outstanding. The Democratic party needs to die, and turning it over to them is the quickest way to accomplish that necessary and disagreeable task.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

PriceRip's picture

You connected the attitude "Ef me? No- Ef You." to Born in East LA. I am from the West Coast (Oregon specifically) and after moving to Nebraska to teach I was tagged with having an abrasive personality. Here the general rule is that people are friendly, the reality is they are polite. Superficially friendly but they would stab you in the back if they could and still not be seen as unfriendly.

On the other hand I have no problem speaking plainly and forthrightly even if someone's feelings or ego gets bruised. I can take it as well as give it. So to some (particularly deans and certain other administrators) I was a potentially dangerous person. Every dean since I started here has tried to get me fired or at least reprimanded at least once during their tenure at UNK née KSC. One of the deans actually thought I had constructed a bomb on campus. Well I am a Nuclear Physicist, after all.

So my cryptic comment was a correction to the notion that only certain parts of the West contain individuals that are not adverse to speaking plainly when confronted.

OK, this is OT but I gotta ask. Is there any credence to the stories that thorium reactors could be our answer to clean, safe energy?

PriceRip's picture

Thorium in the ground is not fissile (a fuel) it is fertile (creates fissile material when it absorbs a neutron). So it is like the raw material for a breeder reactor. Once you get into this fuel cycle you can keep feeding in natural Thorium only. The net effect is that in the long run you well get out less waste (the "daughter" isotopes) using this process than just using the Uranium as a fuel. But there will be waste. From the mining site, through the processing, and during the operational cycle(s).

To optimize the system for Thorium, the reactors should be redesigned. This is an engineering issue and I could say let them worry about that. Uranium was used because that was a relatively easy way to go. It was almost literally child's play. Once Lise Meitner, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strausmann detected the fission process in Uranium, everybody knew how to make a reactor. Well, that is except for the engineering · · · of course. My point? A Thorium fuel cycle could replace a Uranium fuel cycle if we invested in the engineering to optimize for that cycle.

I think the Thorium cycle would be cleaner than the Uranium cycle. Uranium fueled reactors are safe to the level that Thorium fueled reactors would not have a safety advantage. So, while I would not call it a clean option it is a safe option.

Now for the hard part: I have some friends that work at reactors and others that were in the nuclear navy. If all involved in the industry were like those individuals I know well, I would fully endorse this sort of energy production. But, such is not the case.

I know too many people in the industry that are more concerned with pleasing the people that control their economic lives than they are concerned with doing the right thing. I do not trust private companies to run nuclear power plants safely. So, if all this industry was run by a government agency headed by someone like Hyman George Rickover I would have no adverse opinion to express.

I feel I should apologize for being from the Pendleton area given the condition of the Res during the time I lived there.

I should point out that I taught at Kearney State College which became the University of Nebraska at Kearney for 35 years. Over that time I met some of the brightest and friendliest people I have ever known. Against my perception of the norm as being superficial they made living here nice. I should also point out that most Nebraskans are not aware of their leftist history. Through my association with the local Audubon Society I tapped into the "hidden" radicals in the area.

I think the nasty ones just have no problem being public, much like the Westboro Baptist Church group to the south of here a few miles.

Beyond what I learned through my studies of history and my experiences in the 60's and 70's in Omaha's hippie underground and the capitalist hippie New Market area. I always felt certain that Jim Stafford had based his song on a Nebraska framer.
Probably not I guess. But it wouldn't surprise me.
