Silencing Opposition: Then and Now

Just wanted to share. With no responses to my essay request for information on Facebook alternatives or image and video hosting sites, I just broke down and created my own website so I can have a place to post my "art" work from.

The hosting sites that I looked at have way too many privacy issues and restrictions. In addition, they want free access to using my work any way they please. Uhm, no. I choose who I want to share with and that is here.

Have a loverly day!

I guess you just have a place to post pictures, not a blog with a browser window.

I once tried to run my own website, ten years ago. Like you, I didn't like all the snooping, so I went with a site in Eastern Europe. BIG MISTAKE. The site was buried in spam in English and in every Slavic language you could think of. Eventually, I just gave up scraping the Viagra and Hot Asian Girls spam off my comment pages.

while I can work on the appearance and post on it, my chosen name is not live yet. When it does go live, it will be shiftingsands.net.

Oh my. I am still trying to decide whether I should turn comments off to avoid anything similar to your experience. I don't really expect a lot of visitors, though, and WprdPress.org is supposed to have some very good spam filters. As usual, I will learn the hard way. = )

Does WordPress have good policies about privacy and content? I might want to look at them.

privacy things in place. The package I bought with Bluehost included my domain, Jetpack which has more privacy stuff and a couple of other apps for privacy including SSL and the domain privacy app for a year at $95. WordPress is free and is used for the appearance of the site that is hosted on Bluehost. They can automatically hook you up with WordPress.

There are a couple of cheaper options, but I wanted the possibility of e-commerce for later.

Packs start at $2.95/mo (but that is based on a multi-year purchase): https://www.bluehost.com/

I had to contact their support and it was excellent. The site should go live no later than tomorrow. Of course, I now have a lot of work to make it look nice (or at least usable). = )

Edit: WordPress.com also has free sites that they host. They are limited but would probably do well for a simple blog. WordPress.org supplies the visual site stuff and requires a host.
