Puppy Title Contest

I brought her home Sunday afternoon and she has made herself at home. And is she smart. She figured out where her food/water bowls are by evening.I showed her how the dawg door worked and she was a pro by evening. She comes through it to come into the house and does the 3 stairs going up just fine. Going down hasn’t been figured out yet, but she goes to the top of them and whines. Going out seems harder for her and it’s funny to watch when the door is open and she tries going through the dawg door even though it’s facing the wall.

She was actually born in a barn and likes to be outside even when it’s in the 20's.

90054C9B-6EDE-494E-8066-23239B0E0C91.jpeg

She likes to be in corners or under stuff and she sleeps on a shelf in the computer room.

B2E10042-0478-44FB-ABB7-BFEE8256AE28.jpeg

She plays hard and then she crashes just as hard.

9E8EFE03-5880-4FF3-AE4A-9ED6C446D348.jpeg

Her nails and teeth are sharp. Very sharp. I’m wearing 4 bandages on my arms because her nails are razor sharp and I have very thin skin.

65478BF3-F874-40CC-B4FB-37BA1C7C4A2F.jpeg

It is going to be fun watching as her personality develops and I hope I do a good job shaping her into a loving dawg. Her intelligence is scary because if she’s this smart at 8 weeks, yikes what have I gotten myself into?

Loki is one name suggested, but he’s the Norse Gawd of mischief. I’d hate to see her grow into that name.

I’ve tried it on her and she doesn’t respond. But then she doesn’t respond to puppy either.

@snoopydawg They were depressed, didn't want to ever get hurt again, then the stray came to their yard, gave them herself as a gift.
They felt graced. So did the dog.

but maybe she will name herself. Since she is your baby, I would not attempt to name her for you. Only you and she can do that.

Our current three dogs all came to us as adults complete with their names. Baci, our pom, was named by his original owner who was part Italian. His name means "kisses" in Italian. The meaning does not fit him. Mischief would have been a better name.

Regardless, huge congratulations on your new fur baby. She is beautiful and black like my Baci. May you two enjoy many happy years together.

I’ve never gotten another one so soon after one has left. I am still grieving for Charlie and I miss her so much, but I decided that I didn’t have to grieve alone. I will bond better with a puppy instead of an older one that someone else trained and has its own habits.

It’s too bad that it’s winter though. It’s been in the 20's and heading for the teens and the nighttime potty runs are brutal.

Dawg door update. She woke up, went into the kitchen for water and then went down the stairs and out on her own. Yay I thought. She came back in and peed. lol...

That’s funny. Does it work for girl dawgs I wonder? They don’t usually start marketing their territory until they are older. If I get dessert.

I got her nails done today. Ha that sounds funny. "Taking ma dawg to get her nails done." The laundromut has you wait in your car and they come out to pick them up. Vets across the country have been doing this and I think it’s less stressful. There is always one dawg owned who thinks their little fluffy is the cutest thing and let’s them roam causing mayhem with others.

Nothing to do with her teeth.

I usually do go out with her or watch to make sure that business is done. However nature called me too and oh well. I plan to get both the kitchen floor and the carpets redone this spring because they both need it. A few years ago actually.

She slept hard last night for hours before bed then another 4 before she woke and became a terror.

Granma thanks for suggesting I tend to her nails. I will do that today or I will need a transfusion. I saw little lines of blood on the sheet and thought she had been hurt. Lol...there was more this morning and oh my poor arms. What's the set back of filing down her teeth? KIDDING.

Thanks everyone for welcoming the black furball. And thanks so much for being there for me with Charlie. I have felt your support these last 2 plus months and I so appreciate it. As RR states: C99 is a lifeline.

When I looked at her face, I thought, "Scout."

There is still so much to discover in life, and it's nice to have a scout at your side helping you explore.

It's a big job for a dawg to take on a human and play with them and keep them safe. But that's what dawgs are designed to do. It's not easy to train a human, but already she seems up for the job. She'll have you rethinking that dawg door in no time. Maybe consider a pee pad set-up in extreme conditions. Wish I were there. I'd throw you a baby shower.

If I were Charlie, I'd be so happy and relieved that you now have a good dawg to watch over you. Perhaps you sensed her loving presence in the shadows.

@Pluto's Republic

Thank you. Yes you have nailed it. This is an opportunity for this puffball to train me into how she thinks we should go thru life. That is exactly what every dawg has done and what an adventure it has been. I have never looked at a dawg as my property, but as a companion to travel thru life together who has their own personalities. I thought about how she came to live with me and what her purpose might be. If Charlie was still here and she had been healthy I would have gotten another beagle instead of a lab. That is a given. So maybe there is a reason my path took this direction?

And of course not just we two, but everyone who has a furry friend wander into their life changes it and usually for the better. I know that mine has been enriched by all the dawgs that have been with me.

but it's just the name itself.

We were 'gifted' with two four week old kittens, one as black as can be and sleek, the other a soft medium haired grey. The were abandoned in our ditch on a dark and stormy night. After a vet check she said they were quite young and brothers. They are now due for their FiV check. We weren't going to name them until after the blood draw.

But George, the grey and Ira, the black came to us. So they are named and growing like weeds. No going outside until tests and vaccines. Too many feral cats, which is a real problem in most of France. A hangover from farm days, when every barn had cats for rodent control. Some of the most miserable animals here are cats.

But our Tekel, Teddy, and the two cats (all boys) are very lucky and seem to like each other.

Congratulations. This is such good news. Call your doggie "Puppy" until you have the right name. She has a little bit of growing and time with you before you see her as she will be. Your influence will also put a stamp on her personality.

Bonne famille, bon santé.

Thanks for the good news. Enjoy your new friend and grow together.

I find I tend to nickname our animals despite their name. Our cat, Ellie, I tend to call "little bit" cause she's so small, or if she's a bug little monster.

Best of long term friendship with her no matter what name you select.

I always think of you when I think of that name. Zoe, Joey, Sammy, Sam, Grace, Ghost, Casper and so many others have made the list. She has a tiny bit of white on her chest that you can see it the 2nd photo.

Ha,she is trying to scratch her ear. She keeps missing and scratching the carpet. Ah now she got it.

How lovely it would be if you named her Zoe. Not only because the name itself means “Life”, or that it goes well with the nickname Zoebear, but because I’ve been feeling very guilty that I never wrote a tribute for her like I did for Pierre. And she so deserved one. Her last day was particularly poignant with a knowingness of what was happening and a goodbye that surprised me, but also because she was SO FULL OF LIFE! From the very beginning she radiated that energy from every part of her being. Thinking that your sweet cuddly little ball of love might carry her name, touches my heart more than you know.

In my own lexicon, I think of Zoe waving from the end of the alphabet, as the culmination of everything that is named, and as a springboard into everything that is still unknown. We, as thinking beings, are so very, very new and young to the realm of reason. What we know now is such an infinitesimally small part of what is knowable.

I think of you, when I hear 'Zoe,' too.

who doesn't like that sweet puppy breath? It speaks of so many things doesn't it? Too bad that she delivers kisses with her mouth wide open.

I got her nails done yesterday and that has helped so much. Soon her teeth will be less razor sharp. It's funny how much of puppyhood I forget when I get a new one.

I cannot get over how smart she is. This will be so much fun.

Heard something on NPR about dawgs' ability to recognize words. They recognize vowels more than consonants. As a footnote, they suggested that folks with multi dogs give names that don't rhyme; make them distinctive vowels.
https://www.npr.org/2020/12/09/944739759/researchers-on-why-dogs-learn-o...
Of course, that piece opens with a contradictory example of "dig" and "dog" being hard to distinguish.

Thanks for that. I have a feeling this one will be able to understand a Shakespearean sentence. lol she is so amazingly smart. This is so much fun watching her figure things out that I do not want her to. I am still in awe over her learning to come in the door on day one and do stairs like she has. None of my others have picked it up this quickly. Now it is in and out all the live long day. She loves being outside.
