would all get a can, ball, paper plate, etc. Something different for each team. Using a cloth tape they measured the circumference and diameter of their object. Then asked them to divide circumference by diameter. Provided their measurements and math was correct they all produce Pi...and I hope came to understand it's origin if not use.
They like stuff like that much better than something in a book. I used the exercise to get them familiar with using metric units.

the cohort they tried to overdose on what is called STEM today in order that we might catch up or stay ahead of whatever. Moderately rigorous science classes from 7th grade onward, all using metric because science. The only dispute, as I recall, was cgs versus mks. Hardcore math too used meters in problems instead of US.
