Erdogan: we will 'strangle' U.S.-backed force in Syria "before it's even born"

(Reuters) - Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan threatened on Monday to "strangle" a planned 30,000-strong U.S.-backed force in Syria "before it's even born," as Washington's backing for Kurdish fighters drove a wedge into relations with one of its main Middle East allies.

The United States announced its support on Sunday for plans for a "border force" to defend territory held by U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led fighters in northern Syria.

The Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad responded on Monday by vowing to crush the new force and drive U.S. troops from the country. Assad's ally Russia called the plans a plot to dismember Syria and place part of it under U.S. control.

"A country we call an ally is insisting on forming a terror army on our borders," Erdogan said of the United States in a speech in Ankara. "What can that terror army target but Turkey?"

"Our mission is to strangle it before it's even born."

This is a real mess. The choices: abandon the Kurds (as usual) or start lobbing bombs at a NATO ‘ally’. And provoke Russia for good measure.

Lets start with the administration, House, and Senate. Lets make sure there’s a family member of THEIRS on the front lines. Let Blazer Boy lead the charge with Donnie Jr. as his aide-de-camp. Skanks can design a new uniform, gold blazer buttons and all.

Make Chelsea suit up too. The Clintons have been itching for a go at Syria. Her failure of a hedge funder hubby can watch the kids. Make the Clinton family invest a little skin in the game. In fact, bring back the draft. No bone spur deferments. Why should only us and ours always be the ones to die protecting a rich man’s bank balance? Let them ‘earn’ their privilege.

We are soooooo screwed.

But, six of one... mox nix. One excuse as good as another.
Thing is, we have generals that do this for a living. Assess chances of mission success. When G. Dubya mentioned Iraq in Aug. of 2002, nearly a year after 9/11, my brain immediately went to "huh... ??" Two years of military experience. "huh... ??" followed by, "are you out of your fucking mind?!" Generals got 20 years experience. At least. I wanna know which one thought G. Dubya's was a good idea? Becuz I'm guessing not a one unless they bought the PNAC neocon horse$h!t. In which case "victory" not even a consideration. How sad.

There is no legal justification for the US to be in Syria, whatsoever. Syria has complained and Russia has complained to the US and at the UN. Makes no difference. We are a state that operates under no set of laws. This action stretches the Iraq AUMF of 2001 way beyond any reasonable bounds, and that had no international legal basis. We kill, we maim we destroy governments, we arm terrorists, and we have constant campaigns to overthrow any state that we don't like. We interfere in elections, directly, and if we don't like the democratic outcome, we finance a coup, arm and train and pay for the terrorists, or we get our "allies" to do this with our direction. We have done this too many times to even list them here.

When are we going to have even a tiny amount of self reflection?

The people in the rest of the world constantly rate the US as the most dangerous country. Exceptional? Yeah, exceptionally cruel and lawless. Then we project our actions onto any country that we dislike, Russia, Iran, China, North Korea, etc. It would be hard to enumerate any behaviors on their part that come even close to our normal behaviors.
This business in Syria is hyper dangerous. So far direct military conflict between the US on one side and Turkey, Iran, Syria and Russia on the other side has been limited to the US shooting missiles at Syrian assets, and we suspect indirectly at Russian and Iranian assets. This has been a fine line to an all out conflict. It looks like the US is about to step over that line. If this happens expect US and Kurdish casualties. If the US escalates by using more high-tech assets in the area of conflict, expect Russia to escalate. This is an impossible situation as the US has thousands of assets in Syria and will want to protect them, while Iran, Hezbollah, Turkey, Syria and Russia will want to inflict heavy casualties. In this situation the only intelligent thing for the US military to do is to remove assets now. Somehow I doubt that will happen as the US has not yet given up the goal of removing Assad or stealing a large part of Syria.

Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.

In 2002 I wrote on a local board that we would leave the Sandbox worse than we found it. The RWers on there laughed, saying, "Wink, don't worry about this, G. Dubya's got this!" Gawd, I hate when I'm right. But, I Never dreamed it would go on for 14 + years. I was thinking 5, 6 before we tucked tail and bailed.
On top of everything else we need a yuuuge No More War campaign this year. This is beyond bull$h!t.
