Open Thread WE 20 JUL 22 ~ tugboats
Perpetually evoking nature and mythology to address historical issues of contemporary relevance, Mutu positions women as the most powerful, revering their physical form and highlighting their innate connection to ecology.
Welcome to a wide open thread, hosted today by a fried banana. Have a few appointments
scheduled today, so will be mostly trying to avoid the sun and heat.
Just finishing up a fun read On Tugboats by Virginia L. Thorndike. Published in Maine in 2003, she dedicated the book to a friend lost in a tugboat accident. She did a good job of researching tugboat lore and history, with many anecdotes and stories from that world. It was fun for me, as it was also a trip down memory lane from my tug-boating days in the late 70's and early 80's. Exciting, sometimes dangerous and peopled by real characters.
Somehow I became sidetracked into the sub-genre of old tugboat engines ...
slow turning, powerful old beasts with as much personality as their operators.
Hope y'all have something of great social and political import to impart.
Cheers!

We're happy to have gotten rain the last two days - 1.1" all together.
This AM seems Russia plans to resume gas delivery through Nord Stream 1 (at reduced levels). I'm surprised since not doing so collapses the EU....especially Germany.

That chess game is above my pay grade.
Your featured sculpture seem well rooted. We enjoyed a trip to the maritime museum in Biloxi a few years back. Here's an interesting tidbit from the trip...
Thanks for the OT and don't slip on your banana peel.

Can't help but wonder if that flexibility allowed her to
exceed her normal "hull speed", normally determined by a craft's length. Then, of course, further wonder how often it made a difference if it did.

Nasrallah: ‘US/Israel must submit to our demands
or risk full-blown war’
How many countries does the US have to piss-off before there is serious blow-back?
Under what basis does US/Israel have to prevent Lebanon from developing its own oil/gas
resources? Making Hezbollah a political boogie man is no justification.
There are indications China, Iran and Russia are ready for carrying out projects in Lebanon in
spite of threatened US sanctions.

Good morning QMS. Great art, including those
engine shots. Tugs! Ah yes. There used to be and probably still is a pier in S.F. that housed 3, maybe 4, big, modern, kick ass, heavy duty, sea going tugs. They looked vaguely futuristic/sci-fi to me by contrast to the classic 50's era tugs I recall from my youth. When I worked in the area I always took a look to see how many were in and how many were out and wonder what the hell they were up to. S.F. and Oakland, between them, have a respectable flotilla of assorted ages and sizes of tugs and, of course, an unexpectedly high number of barges.

The book did mention some of the old tugs
in the Bay Area, I believe the Hercules is still there.

thanks for posting!
It’s back on google again
You always find such great artwork. Love this picture.
Sam and I are off to the hills again today and will escape the fireworks for St. Brigham's day which celebrates the Mormons coming down Emigration canyon and spouting, This is the Place! Must have been in springtime and everything was lush and green because I think it was dumb for them to find paradise in a desert.
I asked Sam if she had packed her bags. She cracked up with laughter because she doesn’t lift a finger to help me get ready. Except she carries a toy to the car.

Those are some heavy duty
anchors in that canoe. She is moored in place. I guess she has all the water she needs right where she is.
Heavy duty tug engines as well. Very impressive and beautiful in their way.

a threat to the global banking cartel because they
cannot control it. That sums it up IMO. Fortunately for us, there is a large bloc of independent
nations that are shifting away from the financial terrorism of IMF, WEF, WBG, ETC. tactics.
BRIC, local currencies based on real (basket of goods) resources, and international agreements outside of the sanctioned restrictions of SWIFT will become the more sensible mode of exchange.
SPFS (System for Transfer of Financial Messages) and CIPS (China International Payments System) and SCO (Shanghai Cooperative Organization) provide a SWIFT alternative in global banking transactions.
Thanks for your comment!
I'm truly grateful to hear it

Being only a small time investor
I do not know the procedures involved. My guess would be to convert your dollars into rubles or
yuan, then set-up an account in one of the associated banks of the Russian Central Bank or
Bank of China, perhaps thru an intermediary such as Singapore, then transfer your funds. Would take some research.

You find such beautiful art, friend!
A local convenience store owner, from India, was a ship's pilot, took cruise ships through the Suez Canal, and Panama Canal...you boat people are like no other.
A judge pal was a naval guy, was accustomed to bring in battleships into port and docking.
The whole boat and ship and tug and sail is awesome, something I know so little about, being a land lubber.
I will say, check out the Elissa in Galveston. I have a piece of her, that thing that is used for ropes to tie around for docking. Forgive me my lack of ship speak. I got it at the Elissa dedicated museum in Galveston, Texas. Elissa led the bicentennial sail in the New York Harbor during the celebration. Again, apologies for the non-sailor speak.

Yeah, sailor speak is almost a different language
Perhaps the piece of the Elissa you possess would be a cleat or a bitt.
There are many majestic, old sailing vessels still floating around the coasts
and Great Lakes. It's a labor of love to maintain the wooden hulls from 100+
years ago. Some are still working, many are museums. Mystic is a working
restoration yard in Connecticut, not far from here.

I have had that pin
I might try to get photo of it and posted. I will need help. Tech is not my thing!

not to say it's all or nuttin'
but it is a great start!
Just thinking about being out on the ocean
riding a 12,000 horse tug in the middle of the night
towing a 400 ton barge about a mile back
looking out the pilothouse door and seeing the stars
and nothing else ..
your song would go good with that
I can't imagine that, pal
