“Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake.” Henry David Thoreau
~

Welcome to the Wednesday open thread. Where dreams become a debatable topic. Is it real
or just a fantasy? It is up to you to decide.
I'll have a dream with a side of associations thank you. Heavy on the 30 weight, Ma.
(a reference to a Firesign Theater skit about pancakes)

~

MLK Jr. had a dream up on top of a mountain which lived on without him. Do some of your
dreams repeat? You know right away it's 'that dream' by the feel of it. Does it change or
always play out in the same fashion?

~
~

In optimistic states, I will dream of a better world. Where things work out well in all ways.
These are in the minority as devious plots tend to wriggle into most stories. But the
positive feeling left behind after a good one gives me hope and sets the stage for a good
experience. What about you?

Ah, great it is to believe the dream As we stand in youth by the starry stream; But a greater thing is to fight life through. And at the end, The dream is true!

Sometimes life is about risking everything for the dream that no one sees but you.

is this tune from Propaganda, c. 1984:

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXZyTx4TzLg width:400 height:300]

With lyrics courtesy of Edgar Allan Poe, c. 1850:

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

it begins with an A and ends with a M. Algorithm to be exact.

So far it's the 4th warmest January on record plus it's
been snow free which in my memory has never occurred before.
The last measurable snow was right before Xmas. The last day
with a temp below 25 was also in December. But not to worry a
minor "polar vortex" is on the way although I'm not sure if
any snow is coming along for the ride. Weird shit.

naming the unmentionables in the Ukie regime
the rubberbandera man

Bandera not only led the radicalized branch of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), a group accused of having participated in the Holocaust alongside Nazi Germany, which killed hundreds of thousands of Jews in western Ukraine. Its armed wing, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), created in 1942, was also responsible for the death of thousands of Poles – between 70,000 and 100,000, according to historians' estimates – killed in northwest Ukraine between 1943 and 1944, turning Bandera into a Ukrainian anti-hero.

What exactly is an anti-hero? Like a bad guy? Yeah, worship evil Ukies.

Unlike in the days of yore, when they were not OK.
Funny how how things change.

The Ukrainian Nazis slaughtered the Jews during WW2.
Now the Ukrainian Jews are slaughtering the ethnic Russians in Ukraine.
And the Israeli Jews are slaughtering Palestinians.
The German Nazis slaughtered the Jews in WW2.
And now Germany is helping the Ukrainian Nazi Jews slaughter the Russians.
Seems like we should stay out of this mixed-up mess.
Just let them sort it out. But MIC money is flowing, so that ain't gonna happen.

possible to never dream. Everybody dreams, but not everybody remembers what he/she dreamt when he/she wakes up. Is that true?

I don't fucking dream. And I like it that way.

@mimi

swearing there is no dream state in their minds
which is very possible. Perhaps you are a lucky one.
Would I trade unawareness of dreams for the few gems
that surface occasionally? Probably not. If the brain could
edit out some of the nightmares, it might be better. Wink

@QMS

If I could get rid of the nightmares, I'd be better off as well. But, truth be told, almost all of my design innovations as an engineer have come to me in my dreams, after grinding on them by day. I wake up in the morning and check my notes from during the night before (I keep a pad of paper on the head of the bed at all times), and often there it is, if I don't just remember it outright.

And other times, I've just written down gobbletygook, which means that it is time to roll over and go back to sleep for a bit longer. My lyrics and writings often come the same way, in greater or lesser part - but sometimes, those just *stay* gobbletygook.

I'd be doomed as a professional without my dreams. So I'm happy enough to take the bad with the good, or I wouldn't be functional in my job.

@usefewersyllables

Have heard from others with a creative bend that their best inspirations came
to them in a dream. Or a dream-like awareness. I too used to always keep a
pen and pad bedside to jot down keys that may bring me back to wherever I
dreamt, as they seem to slip away as soon as the head leaves the pillow. I
think there is a fairly large body of knowledge to be interpreted just by
analyzing whatever phantasms cross the threshold.

Nightmares, on the other hand, for me are rare. I differentiate between a
bad dream and a nightmare. Bad dreams are not uncommon - weird shit
happening in unfriendly ways. Kinda used to that. But full blown nightmares
are about as rare as mind opening inspirational dreams, thank the pixies.
I guess it balances out.

Thanks for checking in!

@QMS

the white-flash nightmare pretty much nightly. Sometimes, more than once in a night- and it always wakes me up in a cold (or sometimes hot!) sweat. That depends on whether or not I was running when I got vaporized. My wife tells me that sometimes I thrash around pretty hard, and she sometimes wakes me up and saves me the last bit of it. But mixed in with those are the good and useful dreams, so there you go. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to...

US supplied arms with radioactive components being taken out by Russia in
Ukraine will lead to accusations of Russian forces using nuclear munitions,
thus giving the US an excuse to escalate. To protect their de facto ally.
Muy estupido.

So, should Germany provide tanks and other weapons to Ukraine ?

I say no. Why should we ? Selensky in my mind could have had the option to get along with Russia and find a way to live side by side with the Russians.

Another open question. What do you think about the paritäts-regulations between female and male political representatives? Why should your genes as a female or a male be the deciding factor instead of your professionalism and honesty and transparency for choosing a political representatives ?

I feel something bad will happen in Ramstein. Just my guts feeling. Let's hope my feeling are just a matter of eating the real bad, fat and sweet food.

Sigh.

The economies of most EU members are in the tank, thanks to uncle sam's ambitions.
So to answer that question, more arms mean more death. Not a good thing.

As to the second question, I think merit based electability is more important than
skin color, gender or appearance. If you want to elect someone to represent you,
look at the issues they stand for. And what kind of actions they have made.

to get above the ones they represent are not shy about their sickness
the climbers pride themselves at their sacrifice for the common good
ahh, but therein lies their hypocrisy. Climbing on the backs of their
constituents does absolutely no good for the lives of the ones they
represent. It is an ego driven madness to prove they are better, or as
John Kerry orated, they were touched for a better purpose. Of course,
the better purpose is their own. Not saving the planet nor the despicables,
but their own overblown self importance.

I apologize for being so late to the party.
Some days, people just walk in...and their problems are so urgent, I have to shut all the rest of the world down to help them.
I am a dreamer. On any given night, I have dreams. On many nights, I am arguing some case, come up with the rule or theory that escaped me during waking hours. I get up, write it on aa note, go back to bed happy. Usually at 3 a.m.
I have lost my ability to dream of a better world. I can't envision rich and entitled folks John Kerry brags about allowing that to happen.
But I am wide awake, not dreaming, when I say every day of my personal life is so chock full of love, friendship, joint or group effort, wisdom, and kindness, it is an existence I never dreamed I would have.
That includes all my friends on this site, btw. You people are full of it! (It is defined by love, kindness, intelligence, curiosity, wisdom, and appreciation of the arts, the science, and an understanding of all the people in power who either dream of (or wish) us dead, or want us to dream (or wish)we were.
