Unraveling at the edges, the textured works reflect on interlocking issues like unchecked capitalism, social disparities, and the increasingly urgent climate crisis.

Welcome to another phase in the seemingly endless panoptica of wonderland.

~

We tend to glorify nature as an eternal and everlasting idea, separate from ourselves and our real-life actions. We’ve held on tightly to these ideas during the last few decades in the throes of late capitalism and globalization, and if we don’t change our thinking, policies and behavior immediately it will be too late. So I channeled my anxieties about over-production, pollution, and climate change into my work, using plastic in some of the works in contrast with the yarn.

panopticon.jpg

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
.
Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon, where the guards could see everything being done by the prisoners at all times of the day or night.
.

"Morals reformed—health preserved—industry invigorated—instruction diffused—public burthens lightened—Economy seated, as it were, upon a rock—the gordian knot of the Poor-Laws not cut, but untied—all by a simple idea in Architecture!"

.

The idea of the panopticon, a prison built around constant surveillance of the incarcerated, has proved to be one of the more controversial ideas in the history of crime, punishment, and incarceration. However the idea has enjoyed considerable attention in broader cultue for almost two centuries.

.

The idea behind the panopticon is that you never know whether you are watched or not. It’s thus primarily a psychological prison which works because the surveillance mechanism is internalized and does not have to be constantly reinforced externally.

Might be fun to get the camera out and bundle up and get some pictures of it at the full eclipse. With my luck it’ll be cloudy.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

@snoopydawg

I have a shutter release that I can program to capture the event, get up and click it and then go back to bed and just hope I did it right. That’s the plan. But it looks like it’ll be cloudy here. I did watch the almost full moon coming up over Mt. Ogden behind a cloud last night. Nice!

@snoopydawg , that is, if we have clear skies. The clouds rolled in last night so hopefully they will roll out before the show. Thanks for the nice pictures and diagram, good stuff.

"Open Space" Panopticon where everything outside of our private spaces at home is surveilled. Luckily for us, it is done to ensure our safety, which is why we not only willingly accept the situation, but even pay to be included by buying ring systems and all kinds of "smart home" stuff to even track us in our enclosures.

be well and have a good one

Of personal space and privacy.
It's so last century.

@enhydra lutris @enhydra lutris @Lookout I can only hope that he and his wife have made a good life for themselves in Moscow.

We have been conned into relinguishing more of our liberty as each day goes by. Speed is accelerating, out-of-control now in NYC. Ed says change is in our hands, but that claim, while heartening, is quite dubious.

Let me tell you now what the results of the New York State (D) Primary will be in June.

The new Governor will keep her job. Even though the "flood the field" strategy is being employed to create a circus. "this lane, that lane, progressive, too radical, etc"

And the Attorney General will be somebody named Goldman who most people have not even heard of yet. He was the lead attorney working for Adam Schiff during the Impeachment trials.

There will be 7 months of breathless reporting about Jumaane Williams, Zephyr Teachout and others but the outcome, if I am understanding my world correctly, has already been decided.

@NYCVG

And state legislators that have been in office forever are very powerful and hard to get rid of. Then there’s the fact that they can override the will of the voters if they want change. We voted for a bill on marijuana and Medicaid that passed swimmingly and they watered both down making them almost useless. The guy I grew up with is still the mayor of my small town. Or on his 7th tenure.

QMS. How did Goethe know this so long ago. And Bentham with his Panopticon...yuk. If that's a Banksy above, he has it just right. We are being Singapored.
