Open Thread - Thurs 20 Oct 2022: Monopolies - a rerun?
Monopolies in the USA: It's a Rerun
I'm currently reading the book Goliath, by Matt Stoller.
It's good, very good, and it's very slow reading for me. Not because it's boring, but I only have time to read at nights, and oftentimes I'm too tired to make much sense of it. It's well written, dense, full of information and often depressing (or uplifting as well!). It's about 460 pages long, just the writing, and there's another 100 or so pages of citations, notes and index. In other words, it rocks!
All the historical things that Stoller writes about in Goliath are happening again, or have happened recently, or will be happening soon. It's amazing how history is repeating itself, or, in other words, the people in charge are doing the same things their grandparents (great grandparents?) did. These were things which got their (great)grandparents revolution, or near revolution, in many places, caused countless people to fall into, or stay in, poverty, and made a few people very rich. And here we are, like we are in the 1920's again... Gah.
Here's a couple tidbits from the book which illustrate the repetition of recent history. There's tons more in the book which is what makes it so fascinating and frustrating.
In the early 1900's the man who controlled the American financial world was Andrew Mellon. You know, the guy who's last name is part of BNY-Mellon, that big financial behemoth of today. Carnegie-Mellon... Mellon Bank, Mellon this, Mellon that. Gah again! A populist, liberal, Democrat, whatever, Congressman from Texas named Wright Patman took him on. It was a huge undertaking, one which didn't seem would be at all successful when Patman started. Mellon controlled everything, including the FTC. Mellon was the Secretary of the Treasury. Mellon'd controlled that office for 11 years, from 1921 to 1932, by the time Patman started his impeachment proceedings against Mellon. During Mellon's time in office the big companies controlling coal, steelworking, railroads, grocery markets, finances, and more, got bigger and bigger. Monopolies took over and were encouraged. As Stoller wrote, 'It seemed like an endless sea of prosperity. Just not for everyone.' (Goliath: pg 44) Doesn't it seem like that again now?
In the 1920's the FTC, which was implemented under President Wilson to try to enforce fair trade in the economy, was completely controlled by big business, and by Mellon. And so it is controlled by big business again now, although maybe Lina Kahn can make a difference. Patman 'connected the power of monopolists in an individual market with the functioning of the economy at large'; showing how big business in the south where Patman was from drove wages down so low that normal people couldn't make money and pay for the products those businesses and others offered (Goliath: pg 66). 'A corporate monopoly, a chain store, and a powerful banker were organized around the same goal, stripping the purchasing power from the small businessman and farmer.' (Goliath: pg 67). Hasn't changed much has it? I mean, the way monopolies and finances control us when they are allowed to do so, even encouraged to do so, by the government, hasn't changed.
Patman's impeachment of Mellon eventually succeeded, Mellon resigned and became Hoover's ambassador to the UK. From the UK Mellon watched the economic system he'd set up fall apart during the Great Depression, and his buddy Hoover get beaten by FDR. Patman and other reformers were able to implement other changes. Under Patman's, and other populists' and liberal democrats' pushing and direction, with their influence over FDR and others, the American economy was reshaped to provide bounty for the common people from the mid 1930s to the 1960s (and 70s too). And that's about where I am in the book - coming into the time of Nixon and Carter and *gag* Reagan after the anti-Communist crap which threw New Deal proponents into disarray (and jail, sometimes).
So, now we're back to the 1920s in many ways. Here's an example of a very recent (like a week ago) monopoly/merger undertaking - the joining of Kroger and Albertson's/Safeway supermarkets: Stoller wrote about it here. In my little town, Safeway (once upon a time it was Albertson's and I loved it then) is now the only grocery store. The other store (part of a small chain) finally got run out of business a few months ago. I call the Safeway, 'Safebertson's' because I was pissed when Albertsons bought up Safeway and changed the name and feel of the store. Now, I guess I'll have to call it 'Krafbertson's' or something.

Finally, Stoller was on Breaking Points last month talking about Amazon and its new worker training exec (the former private prison exec). The last point he makes (starts around 7:45 in the video), contrasting Kahn and Josh Hawley - and showing how they agree on monopolies, was pretty dang good. Many of the people know, most of the people care, about how businesses control the government no matter those people's political party, but our rulers? Most of them don't care so much.
So, thanks for reading and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

Rain!
It's supposed to start raining here on Friday, finally, after months. Winds are supposed to shift and start pushing the smoke from the fires to the east, out of the Sound. I don't want anyone to have to suffer that smoke, but I'll be glad when it's gone and the rains start putting out the fires. Air quality here the last few days has been 'unhealthy' and worse. Yesterday the Puget Sound area had the worst air quality in the world. I dunno, reminds me of living in SoCal when I was young and is not really a record I wanna score.
Hope things are going well with ya'll! Post whatever below, it's the Open Thread!

Sounds like you have a monopoly on smokey air
Glad to hear the rains may wash it away.
Thanks for the essay!
Yep, we were number one again today,
highest air pollution in the world. BUT... there were tiny drops of water on the ground when I was planting today. Not enough to do more than mark the darker spots every couple inches. However, it is a hint that tomorrow, Friday, we will start to get some rain (according to the forecasts). Yay!
Hope all is well with you, and thanks for stopping by!

It's not supposed to be
Amazon, or Kroger, or Albertsons- it is supposed to be Costco! C'mon, Costco board - buy 'em all out! The prophecy must be fulfilled!

Now, where's my Brawndo?

heh, funny about that. A guy named Sol Price first,
iirc, started White Front, then Fedco or Fedmart, and eventually Price Club, which was merged into Costco to form Price-Cosco (I still have a price-costco card) which changed its name to costco. They're just a few dozen mergers behind.

Dang...
And here I thought Costco was kinda 'local' being that their brand is 'kirkland'. But... I see from a bit of wikipediaing that they are not in many ways, and they are the third largest retailer in the world! Gag!

It could have been much
worse- Walmart *almost* bought them out back a few years ago. If that had happened, we'd be watching the spectacle of Sam's kids going up against Bezos for total domination right now.
All we need now is for those two and Disney to get together... We'd go straight from Idiocracy to Max Headroom....

Hah!
That video clip was spot on. We've a costco about 20 minute drive away, so we don't go that often. I did the computation, the distance is enough that if we are only buying drinks in bulk, we'll just break even (over shopping at the Krafbertsons).
I hope your day rocked, and thanks for leaving that video. I laughed

Stoller isn't
on my regular radar, and is probably very good on economic/monopoly matters. As to war, I ran across this the other day and found it troubling:
I wonder if
he was being sarcastic? I dunno, honestly. If he writes about war, I never read it. I'm a subscriber to his 'Big' newsletter, and read the stories there. Never saw one about war. On the other hand, I'm not on twitter, so maybe I'm missing something.
I hope he was being sarcastic. If not, kinda lowers my estimation of him in some ways. Thanks for stopping by!

Sounds like a good book
in a depressing kind of way. When the economy pooped the bed, Obama came in with a bunch of wall streeters to fix things. They did, the recession lasted 4-5 months, for Wall Street. For the rest of us it went on for almost 10 years with a lot of trauma and disruption.
Yea, Obama
makes me think of Wilson in this context, kinda. All promise, no delivery. And the economy is so depressing and the book is too, because the good part, where the 'good' guys (ok, us 'leftists') win, happens in the middle of the book. So it doesn't end well. I guess the economic cycle spins the same all the time. I wish TPTB would learn, but greed overcomes everything. Or maybe it's just that they can't, don't, know how most of the people live?
That's for dropping by!

Good afternoon Sima. We spent yesterday
much of today cleaning gutters and installing gutter guards. Several more similar days to come. Oddly enough, at the end of the day we aren't interested in the news, just a glass of wine, dinner and something relaxing like a computer game.

Sounds like a good way to end the day!
We need to clean gutters, again. But we are waiting until the last of the leaves fall. We cleaned the gutters in the spring too. Looked great for a while, now they look like troughs of leaves. Luckily, if we want, we can feed the leaves to the goats, or compost them, whatever works.
My husband relaxes with a computer game, or a football game on youtube. Me, I still play jigsaw puzzles. I think I'm nuts!
Good to 'see' you and thanks for coming by!

Thanks for the heads up
about the book. I just get depressed to see monopolies getting around the laws prohibiting monopolies. Free market means one thing to the 99%, quite another thing to corporate mergers guys.
Well, we know how this played out 100 years or so ago. And here we go, once again, down the same road to hell.
I hope the kids are alright.
Thanks for the OT.
I am digging deep into forcible detainers and evictions. The only time I will petition to get someone evicted is when a young relative is taking advantage of an older relative. That's the only situation when I am glad to get someone kicked outta the house. Don't mess with auntie!

Exactly! I don't see why we have to keep repeating the same economic travails... ok, I do. The hugely rich never stop looking for ways to make more. And that means stomping on the underclasses, I guess.
Hope your day was really good!
