I cut my hair in '72. I wore it in a pony tail to keep it out of the way and my thick mop took forever to dry...so off it went, and you would have thought I enlisted to go to Vietnam the way people reacted. It's whats in your head, not what's on it that counts. Be yourself...everyone else is taken.

I can't recall ever being angry at someone simply for having chosen "very individual standards: for his or her own life. I mean, Dahmer chose a very individual standard for his life and made me sick to my stomach, but because he was a creepy serial killing cannibal, not because he was a non-conformist.
If people choose great, very individual standards for their lives, like Michelangelo, I have no anger, only awe and admiration. Maybe that's because I accept that I am an ordinary human being and have little to no difficulty with that?
Sometimes, my loved ones tell me I'm extraordinary and I patiently explain to them why I am not. Sure, being as gifted as Shakespeare or Da Vinci or Beethoven or Hedy LaMarr would have been super cool, but I didn't get those genes. Oh, well.
I've been meaning to make an appointment for a haircut, but I don't mind if you don't cut yours. Why would any sane person mind another person's having long hair? Serial killing I mind; long hair doesn't even register on my personal interpersonal Richter scale.

Sometimes the price we pay for being non-conformists
Is being alone. You'll notice I didn't say lonely. There's a difference.
Whenever I find myself in a group, very often I feel distinctly apart from everyone else. I don't watch TV so I can't talk about pop culture. I don't go girl shopping so I can't talk about clothes and makeup. I'm not married so I can't talk about marriage. I don't have children so I can't talk about children. I don't watch sports so I can't talk about sports. I don't gossip so I can't talk about other people. I don't go out drinking so I can't talk about pub crawls.
I will never be wealthy in the same way I'll never be popular, I'm not prepared to do what I'd have to do to be either.

I often prefer to be alone. I have the personality that prefers a few close friendships over a network of people. Sue, my wife, and I were close. Everyone else is just acquaintances. Some people find me aloof or standoffish. Sometimes, I am just trying not to say what I am thinking.
