Open Thread - Friday, February 17, 2017 - Funk Friday Rides Again

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
~ George Bernard Shaw ~

What a strange week of news?

It feels like it is time to get down to funkin' business.

It has been awhile since there has been a can't sit still Friday. I have been working on not sitting still. Turn it up!

I am trying to decide whether to mostly unplug. The whack-a-mole media and corrupt politicians just agitate me.

I don't have much to say. I have been spending time working on myself and not really paying close attention to the macro perspective. Valentines day was kind of meh. I really would have liked to hug Sue. Now I have to figure out how to get back out there.

What's on your minds?

Have a great weekend!

unplugging musings are in my dreams too, but then I wake up and oh well, why unplugging, when the unplugging is done by some mysterious underworld gnomes anyhow.

Three of your videos are not available to view and listen to from here in Germany. So, I feel unplugged against my will. That's the only funky business I want stomp with my feet and crash.

Funky funk-a-doodles.

Have a good day. We have funky weather over here. Where is the sunshine in my life?

There is some sunshine out there, so no reason to get all funky not finding it. Smile

@mimi ... in our wedding. It was in the memorial mix too. I am funkin' excited for the Jazzfest trip. Stevie Wonder plays Saturday and Tower of Power plays Sunday. Funkin' A!

I have music playing throughout the day, suprise, suprise. Certain songs pull at my heartstrings.

Raggedy Ann's picture

Shaw is correct. In the early 70's, I thought I was out there "finding" myself, when what I really did WAS create myself! How 'bout that?!?! I see that creativity yanking on me all the time, too - it never goes away!

I know Sue got that virtual hug on V-day. She is wrapped in your mind, which does offer some comfort. She'll always be with you as your creation journey takes this new turn. The universe is looking after you and has your next adventure waiting in the wings. Be alert!

Nice weather today, but rain this weekend. We need the moisture!

Have a beautiful day, everyone! Pleasantry

@Raggedy Ann I have always been a make something happen sort of person. So far, I have been to the gym every other day. I am nearly over my cold and need to pull out the bicycle. I also plan to take some guitar lessons, instead of always playing the same thing.

Unplugging has crossed my mind too, but then I can't so I try to find some balance. Spending at least an hour walking every morning certainly helps.

I had a neat Valentine's experience. My husband and I are members of the local arts council. On Valentine's Day all the members were invited to a champagne and chocolate event which was held in the early afternoon. Everyone had a glass of champagne and there was a table full of all sorts of chocolate goodies and desserts.

Then the director asked everyone to step to one side of the room because she had a surprise for us. And out walked Mike Guggino (mandolin) and Mike Ashworth (percussion normally, but guitar that day) of the Steep Canyon Rangers. They played and sang several songs and then finished with an instrumental. Ashworth asked Guggino to go easy on him on that one. It was a big treat for me to be standing only five feet away watching Mike Guggino's fingers flying on the mandolin.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kopqqPLnX0c]

Three of the six members of the Steep Canyon Rangers live in Brevard, including the two Mikes and lead singer and guitarist Woody Platt. The other three (Graham Sharp - banjo who write most of their songs, Charles Humphrey III - stand up bass, and Nicky Sanders - fiddle) live 35 miles up the road in Ashville.

[video:https://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5fxHzKTmPM]

Over eleven years ago when my husband and I first visited Brevard, the very first night we were here, we went to a Mexican restaurant in downtown. It was a Friday night and that was music night in that restaurant. There was a blue grass band fronted by three women playing that night. The guitarist and sometime fiddle player in that band was Laura Ashworth, Mike Ashworth's mother.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Thanks a lot for funky fridays. Arstechnica for details - A court order blocked pirate sites that weren’t supposed to be blocked

The other day I posted about it, turns out piratebay was just "collateral damage". Again, found discussion on the NANOG list before searching, thanks USENET.;-) Glad the ops are asking questions and are not just being employee robot enactors, I do not welcome those overlords either. For instance,

The action isn't against the people infringing copyright, the sites
(arguably) aiding them in infringing copyright, or even the company
providing hosting services to those sites. It is, if the situation is
being reported correctly, forcing a connectivity provider to block access
to some elements of the hosting services *worldwide* based on the fact
that it operates in one country. In my view, both far too many steps
removed from the offence, and, more importantly, overly-broad in impact.

Do you think the Chinese government should be able to force any voice
provider operating in China to block any of their customers, anywhere in
the world, from talking about Taiwan as an independent country?

Do you think the Iranian government should be able to force any mobile
phone company operating in Iran to implement a worldwide ban of Pokemon
Go?

If the answer to either of those questions is "no", can you explain why
the jurisdiction should be limited in these cases, but not for Spanish
copyright holders?

(Note that I'm not talking about the "right" or "wrong" of those decisions
within their respective jurisdiction, that's not relevant to where their
jurisdiction extends.)

Because if all operators become complicit, that is the end of Internets as we know (knew?) them. Already it looks bleached to me, compared to '90s when I first dialed in. Corporate boring zzzz most all of it commercial crapola, just like TV was. Thanks so much BigTech, hope your homeless transients vagrants (the evolution of media on poverty) appreciate what a shit hole you created right where you live. Not nice.

I'm pretty pretty fed up with all these industries claiming goodness in California. NO, not with such poverty, homelessness, infrastructure collapse, etc.. Nope. Not worth it. Go back from whence you came ... ha ha a girl can dream. I would give up this music sharing for sheltering homeless any day every day, until all basic human needs are met it's not that hard but not enough people care, they just want what they want. Same as it ever was, don't fix anything just plow ahead exploiting every thing in sight, as the world burns.

Edited to add: ends up I can't comprehend sentences like "when I heard some of those things I picked up the papers the next morning and said, oh, this is going to be front page, it wasn’t even in the papers".

So he picked up what? And said front page, where it wasn't, even? ~doink!~ Woo! Comedy is gonna soar these next years. Precedent in 140 chars. Or less.

@HenryAWallace He took the Iowa Basic Skills test and scored a 99. He was frustrated that he did not get 100. Sue tried to explain that 99 is the best you can get. In my own helpful way, I told him that a '100' just means you are better than yourself.

@NCTim

I used to have great trouble understanding how one could be an over-achiever. I mean, how can you possibly achieve more than you are capable of achieving? When I got older, I understood it might be one of all of these:

obsessive perfectionism

burning out because of how much you feel you must achieve and/or have tried to achieve

achieving in one area at the expense of the rest of your life--no balance.

Tim, if I were older, I'd adopt you. If I were younger, I'd follow you around like a motherless puppy until you adopted me. As it is, I'm just a huge fan. It's impossible that you don't have many huge fans.

You don't need fixing, creating or re-creating. Just give yourself time and space to be you, my friend. All else will follow, "I guarantee." And, fyi, nothing is wrong with being still. Just let yourself be, in every possible sense. You have nothing whatever to prove to anyone and certainly not to yourself.

Being your friend would be an honor. I don't know if I could keep up, though. You are much more clever than I and you know much more, and much cooler, music than I know.

I'm good at appreciating those things in others, though, if I do say so myself. And I lavish unsolicited advice. Isn't that how mothers-in-law became the punch line of so many old jokes?

Some people are always giving advice. Take HenryWallace.

Please.

[an old girl needs to rant - you have been warned]
this is the letter he wrote:
Mark Zuckerberg Posted a 5,700-Word Letter on the Dangers of Isolationism
err, this page:
See, I didn't even have to login to facebook to read his letter.
Isn't that something? If I wanted to read a letter posted on Jill Stein's or Cornel West's facebook page, I would have to login to my account. Dude. I have no intelligence, as you can see. But, may be we can change you change this funk.

Mr. Zuckerberg's letter start with saying:

History is the story of how we've learned to come together in ever greater numbers -- from tribes to cities to nations.

Yeah, we came together, right. How many tribes in a city? Do they love each other? Really? Where is the 'intelligence' in that? Hate is love and bombs are flower power. Nobody needs to flee or dream of a better world. I understand.
He continues:

Today we are close to taking our next step. Our greatest opportunities are now global -- like spreading prosperity and freedom, promoting peace and understanding, lifting people out of poverty, and accelerating science. Our greatest challenges also need global responses -- like ending terrorism, fighting climate change, and preventing pandemics. Progress now requires humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a global community.

and

Bringing us all together as a global community is a project bigger than any one organization or company, but Facebook can help contribute to answering these five important questions:

  1. How do we help people build supportive communities that strengthen traditional institutions in a world where membership in these institutions is declining?
  2. How do we help people build a safe community that prevents harm, helps during crises and rebuilds afterwards in a world where anyone across the world can affect us?
  3. How do we help people build an informed community that exposes us to new ideas and builds common understanding in a world where every person has a voice?
  4. How do we help people build a civically-engaged community in a world where participation in voting sometimes includes less than half our population?
  5. How do we help people build an inclusive community that reflects our collective values and common humanity from local to global levels, spanning cultures, nations and regions in a world with few examples of global communities?

Ok, all these are fine questions and noble intentions, Mr. Zuckerberg, but the last thing I will do, is using your platform to find answers to the questions or propose and post my ideas about solutions. And you can tell your soul brother, Mr. Bezos, that he should not drop with his drones his book deliveries in my backyard. I just love to walk over to the last independent bookstore standing and buy my books in person. And btw I have already some rants in mind to answer the five questions. I just wonder which person I can whisper my suggestions in the ear? If you think I trust anyone to do that, you have lost your 'intelligence', Mr. Zuckerberg.

A little megalomaniacal, aren't you? Both of you? No?
