Welcome to your regularly scheduled open thread. If I had to name today's moon it would be
The frozen moon. Although the snow moon works as well. Between the clear skies and snow covered ground reflecting the moon light, it is quite bright at night. And cold!

~

All topics are on the table. War drums? Run away inflation / devaluation of the Petro dollar?
The lack of sensible leadership in DC? Climate catastrophes? Supply chain breakdown? Or,
how about homelessness, poverty and hunger (see moon above)? Income inequality?
Striking workers? Horrendous feats of propaganda and misinformation by our vaunted
press? The issues at the forefront of our lived experience are aplenty.

I had hired help yesterday working with me to cut some trees and prune some too, so I was out of pocket. I've been enthralled with the ongoing saga in Canada. The elites are desperately clinging to power, but seems their grip is slipping. Also good news in the states as the $hill's dirty deeds are getting some light. All as the MSM turns their heads the other way to avoid reporting the dim deception. I've only seen Faux news cover it. All the MSM is prowar...evil Russia still has troops in RUSSIA!

Well we live in interesting times.

Headed close to 70 here today ahead of a big storm system tomorrow. Harvesting a collard plant this morning to cook today. Finally got all the cabbage except the purple which is still not fully headed up. Time for new starts for the spring crop. Always something.

Thanks for the OT (and filling in yesterday). I wish someone would volunteer to cover Tuesdays.

Biden’s Multi-Billion Afghan Theft Gets Scant Mention on TV News

Last Friday, Biden announced his intention to take the $7 billion in frozen funds currently held in US banks and use them as he sees fit, giving half to a humanitarian aid trust fund for Afghans and half to families of 9/11 victims.

Lest anyone imagine this to be generous in any way, note that the $7 billion—most of which originated as international aid, and representing the vast majority of the central bank’s assets—belongs to the Afghan people, not to Biden. And the Afghan people bear zero responsibility for the 9/11 attacks. On the contrary, they are also its victims, because of the subsequent US decision to invade and occupy their country.

@QMS This is theft in the open, from a country we left devastated and starving.

Nevermind decrees our gov't. Take anything not nailed down. That's the American Way.

How about those Russian troops daring to approach their own border........Look there. Look there.

Nobody bothered to note a court hearing in my schedule. In the meantime, I scheduled a family outing to San Antonio and Fredericksburg.
Unless I am furnished zoom info, I will miss out on San Antonio, catch up with the crew in Fredericksburg. We shall see if I spend my evening packing. Or, not packing.
Weather here is very nice, except for the thunderstorms and heavy rain due tomorrow. Afterwords, it returns to lovely spring weather.
Thanks for pitching in to cover the OT space.
And thanks for the Draco info. I thought Draconian referred to Dracula!

but along with that will come over an inch of rain, then come the falling temps so we can add in some snow once it's all over.

The Canadians Truckers are heroes! There is no doubt they have shown the world what medical tyranny is all about.

Plus it's always a great day when one wakes up and we haven't gone to war with Russia. I was thinking of buying a table to celebrate but this is a tad too big for my house.

those born Jewish

"Antisemite used to be someone who didn't like Jews
now it's someone who Jews don't like"

Heard from Margaret Kimberley

himself from the lap dogs sent to negotiate.
The Canadian Truckers have inspired a whole new level of resistance.
Showing the rulers what it means to be a free nation.
Trudeau won't back down, it is not in the WEF playbook.

The inspiration may trickle over their southern border.

on the Smothers Brothers show was one of the things that Pete Townshend claims caused him the most hearing damage- he lost 90 percent of the hearing in his right ear, right then and there. It sure does blow his hair back, in any case...

I used to never miss that show- but somehow I missed that episode. I'm still scarred from that, myself.

And here's a (nearly) moon from our favorite universally-powered band...

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday warned of a “swift and firm response” from the U.S. and its allies if Russian President Vladimir Putin moved to recognize territories in eastern Ukraine that have been locked in conflict since 2014 as "independent."

Blinken said that an appeal from the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, for Putin to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in eastern Ukraine as independent would violate the Minsk agreements, an international effort agreed to in 2015 to end fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in the region.

“Enactment of this resolution would further undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, constitute a gross violation of international law, call into further question Russia’s stated commitment to continue to engage in diplomacy to achieve a peaceful resolution of this crisis,” Blinken said, adding that such a move would “necessitate a swift and firm response from the United States in full coordination with our Allies and partners.”

This is pretty brazen considering this.

https://www.republicworld.com/world-news/us-news/return-to-democracy-us-...

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Venezuelan Interim President Juan Guaidó on Tuesday, spokesperson Ned Price said in a US State Department release. In the telephonic conversation, US Secretary Blinken stressed the importance of a “return to democracy” in Venezuela through free and fair elections. In the first-ever dialogue with the Venezuelan interim president under the Biden administration, Blinken stressed that the United States was making efforts to work with "like-minded allies" including the European Union, Lima Group, Organization of American States, and International Contact Group. He added that it was important for the US to increase multilateral pressure and press for a peaceful, democratic transition in countries that are an ally and a partner.

“Secretary Blinken and Interim President Guaidó discussed the urgent humanitarian needs in Venezuela that have forced nearly 5.5 million Venezuelans to flee Venezuela,” the US State Department informed. It emphasized that Blinken also applauded Venezuela’s efforts, saying that the US will be partisan in trying to find solutions to ease their suffering.

There is no justice. There can be no peace.

11 years ago today (Día de San Valentín 2011), an Ecuadorian court found Chevron guilty of poisoning the Amazon and her communities and issued the historic $9.5 billion dollar judgment for dumping 16 billion gallons of toxic waste. To this day, Chevron has paid $0 to the Indigenous and rural communities of Ecuador to remedy the contamination, health concerns, and harm to their homes. Instead, Chevron has spent 11 years attacking, suing, and dehumanizing these communities, as well as human rights attorney Steven Donziger He is currently serving a sentence handed down by a federal judge linked to Chevron.

On February 4th, 2022, after 913 days of home detention, the Bureau of Prisons removed Steven’s ankle monitor. But a few days ago, on February 9th, at 7:30 am, Steven was told to report to a halfway house in the Bronx and ”to bring clothes” with no other explanation. Upon arrival, he was given no other information as to his detention. Finally, after a full day without answers, his legal team - including Ron Kuby, Marty Garbus, and WPLC legal director Natali Segovia - learned that Steven was “under investigation. ”The statement issued by Steven’s legal team shows that Steven was under investigation for “spending time in his own apartment building outside of his actual apartment”. The timing of his confinement, just days before the anniversary of the historic victory for Indigenous and rural communities in Ecuador, is not surprising. Steven’s advocacy and efforts to protect these communities have been a source of retaliation and lawfare for years.

Today, after 5 days of unusual and unnecessary detention, Steven returned to his family. He wrote on Twitter, “Emotional but still not free.” Steven awaits full release on April 25th.

Also on this day in 1779:

Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) murdered British colonizer Captain James Cook who invaded the Pacific and overstayed his welcome (it was his 3rd visit to Hawai‘i) and attempted to kidnap Kalaniʻōpuʻu, the ruling chief (aliʻi nui) of the island. Cook’s invasion of Australia, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tahiti, etc., triggered British colonization throughout the Pacific. Kānaka scholar Samuel Manaiakalani Kamakau wrote: “The fruits and the seeds that his [Cook’s] actions planted sprouted and grew, and became trees that spread to devastate the people of these islands.”

Not quite legacy media accepted.

and expound upon any and all matters but provides exemplars of great magnitude nad importance. Of course, many such matters are of profound importance because the solutions are no closer than they were when I was a child, such things as world peace, global poverty, inequality, human rights and the like. Others, like the climate emergency, though largely unrecognized in its beginnings, still require global effort.

I decided to throw out some things that are more local issues, and generally more or less susceptible to local action.

Public Libraries are dying. They are under attack, of course, because they are a public service and constitute a public good. They provide access to information, to learning, to understanding and culture and can serve as meeting places and cultural centers. They provide access to materials and media of all types up to and including e-books that can be checked out and read remotely. Among the first services to go are the bookmobiles, which I fondly recall from certain portions of my youth, bring all of the above services to those who cannot go to the brick and mortar facilities.

It is best to work on library preservation, expansion and enhancement locally or quasi-locally and is an endeavor more within the reach of all of us than something like income inequality or political corruption.

So, whatever happened to the great connectivity pipe dream of internet access for all. This again can be tackled locally provided that state or federal legislation outlowing or crippling it doesn't get passed.

Just thinking aloud.

Oh, lookie what I found

Granted, it is not run by the town or state. It is an endowment to the town and survives on
donations, book sales, and generous donors. I absolutely love the culture there. We meet
for cooking clubs, reading groups, tech help and many other things. It is a pivotal part of
our community. It may be small, but the librarians are great!

Also good, is the local library is part of the state wide library network, so I can order a book, and if they don't have it, they will get it from another library sent free for local pick-up. We are a very small state, but they also procure books from out of state, again, at no charge. This is good for a book junky like me!

Opposing counsel filed a motion for continuance, swearing she had a "personal illness" and could not return to work until March 21, drs.' orders.
Well, folks, you feel free to 'splain to me what a "personal illness" might be. I informed the court that my personal safety concerns, and my concern for all court personnel, resulted in my agreeing to the continuance.
I am gonna get to play around with family in San Antonia after all!
