(Old Chuckles couldn’t take the heat): Schumer withdraws offer on Trump's wall

Schumer withdraws offer on Trump's wall
Republicans aligned with Trump are unlikely to go for any bill that does not offer a major boost in border wall funding.
By BURGESS EVERETT and SEUNG MIN KIM 01/23/2018 12:09 PM EST Updated 01/23/2018 04:35 PM EST

Chuck Schumer is taking his big spending boost for Donald Trump’s border wall off the table.

The Senate minority leader, through an aide, informed the White House that he was retracting the offer he made last week to give Trump well north of the $1.6 billion in wall funding Trump had asked for this year, according to two Democrats. And now they say Trump will simply not get a better deal than that on his signature campaign promise.

Schumer “took it off,” said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat. “He called the White House yesterday and said it’s over.”

After the publication of this story, a spokesman clarified that the wall offer was retracted Sunday, rather than Monday. Schumer told reporters that he withdrew his suggestion, offered midday Friday, because it was meant to be part of a broader package that would have averted a government shutdown.

"The thought was that we could come to an agreement that afternoon, the president would announce his support, and the Senate and the House would get it done and it would be on the president’s desk," Schumer said Tuesday. "He didn’t do that. So we’re going to have to start on a new basis and so the wall offer is off the table."

I have never read anything other than Chuckles agreed to get down on his knees in exchange for an immigration vote “at some later date”.

“The thought was...”

Whose ‘thinking’ was that? And was it part of the deal? Sure doesn’t sound like it to me.

Chuckles saw that he fucked up and now he’s back-tracking. He didn’t have the guts to do the right thing in the first place and now he’s playing ‘take backs’. He has ensured that the shutdown and any further problems will be tied securely to the ‘left’.

Did I ever mention what an amoral sleazy creature I think Chuckles is? I’ll have to remember to do that sometime. I’ll leave myself a note to do that.

At some ‘future’ date.

Big deal that he said that he's taking his ball and going home, his willingness to give him full funding for it is disgusting. All of the democrats are okay with the wall when it's cheaper to use drones for visual purposes. Even Bernie has said that the wall is important for border security. 6 companies have submitted their pieces of it and most of them have ties to banks and other financial institutions.

Schumer caving on DACA yesterday is being spun as a good deal because... Hell I can't understand the kos kids thinking. 3-4 different diaries there come at his caving from a different pretzelizing direction and they all say that Schumer has the republicans right where he wants them. In other words, he's playing 11 dimensional chess.

Have any democrats called out the border patrol agents for destroying the life saving jugs of water? Nope. Even if they did say something about it they would probably blame it on Russia.

BTW, the number of tweets of #Schumer caved was blamed on Russian bots. The Russians are everywhere, run away.....

a talking point--meaning, Schumer's claim that he offered between 1.4 and 1.5 Billion. The problem with that is that it's no where near what DT had already said he would need to strike a deal. (This has been repeated for days in the WH Press Briefings.) IOW, it's the same sum of money that Durbin and Graham offered, which was turned down during the '*hithole' meeting. Therefore, Schumer knew--or should have known--that the offer wouldn't go anywhere.

This is a case of the polls coming out, showing that 60-70% of those polled are against 'shutting down the Government' over DACA.

Now, a majority of Americans support 'passing' DACA--just not shutting down the government to do it. That's what terrified Chuckie, Manchin, Donnelly, etc., into backing down.

Of course, it's 'possible' that DT will strike a deal with Chuckie in the days to come--after all, in the past, DT has hosted fundraisers for him at Mar-A-Lago. Time will tell.

This article says that he offered $25 billion

Senate Republicans said Tuesday that Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer offered $25 billion in funding for a border wall during negotiations with President Trump, but the New York Democrat reportedly rescinded the offer in the wake of the government shutdown.

Either way he caved on holding out until DACA was included in the CR. Every day there are over 100 Dreamers who fall off the protection of not being deported. The republicans are rumored to be working on legislation that is going to have some serious consequences for the Dreamers. I'm not going to post the article about this yet because I want to see if I can find more information about this first and other websites that backs it up. But the republicans are not going to work with the democrats on this, IMO. The biggest obstacle is going to be Trump and if he will pass whatever congress comes up with.

How many people will trust anything he says in the future after he folded. Again? This is what people are upset about, not that he was keeping the government shut.

I didn't know that he had fundraisers at the Mr. McGoo resort. I guess that this shouldn't surprise me though. They all just pretend to be on different sides, but after their theatrics and shouting at each other, they go into their offices with each other and laugh their lily butts off at anyone who believes their rhetoric.

were in the Oval Office during that meeting--DT, Schumer, and their respective Chiefs of Staff. So, we may never know the full truth.

What does seem obvious (to me) is that Schumer is the one with everything to lose if he does agree to spending--full or otherwise--on a border wall. And, after I heard him lie through his teeth about terms of the Alexander-Murray proposal (on a Sunday show), everything he says is suspect (for me).

Background: The Alexander-Murray proposal included 'Copper Plans,' which Schumer said that Dems didn't support. He claimed that the Dems on the HELP committee gave in to Republicans, and allowed Copper Plans to be included in the bill. Well, excuse me, Chuckie--several conservadem Senators ran on allowing these toxic plans to be sold in the ACA Exchanges [in 2014]. Several of whom, bit the dust, I might add. (Begich, Pryor, and Landrieu.) See below. Here's an excerpt,

. . . One of the most interesting examples of the reform effort are the "copper plans" being proposed in the Expanded Consumer Choice Act, which is being pushed by seven moderate Senate Democrats: Mark Begich, Mark Warner, Heidi Heitkamp, Tim Kaine, Mary Landrieu, Angus King, and Joe Manchin. ('6' Democrats--my note)

BTW, here's a blurb about the DT/Schumer relationship,

New York ties bind Trump and Schumer, but can they last through health care?

Nicole Gaudiano, USA TODAY Published 1:35 p.m. ET Sept. 22, 2017

But the two opposing leaders have a history that dates back at least two decades.

“His father and my grandfather were builders together in Brooklyn,” Schumer said of Trump during a 2006 cameo appearance on Trump’s reality TV show, The Apprentice. “Even when he was much younger, you knew he was going to go places.”

It's not clear when they first met, but records show the now-Republican Trump began donating to Schumer’s campaigns in 1996, with contributions through 2010 totaling nearly $10,000. Trump reportedly hosted a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2008 at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla.

But the two opposing leaders have a history that dates back at least two decades.

Since 1987, Trump has been registered at times as a Republican and Independent and, from 2001 to 2009, as a Democrat.

“He used to love me when I was a Democrat, you know,” Trump joked about Schumer, at a dinner in New York in 2016.

From all that I've read and heard, Repubs want to completely overhaul our immigration system. IOW, it would become much more similar to Canada's and many European systems--merit based.

Mostly, I'm inclined to agree with you that the two principals may not come to an agreement. Unless, DT is willing to accept the Durbin-Graham proposal. And, if the article above is to be believed, DT and Schumer were pretty friendly at one time; so, anything's possible, I suppose.

Have a good one!
