Oh my - I guess I won't be mimi any longer

Tavellers seeking visa waiver entry to the US may soon be asked to list their social media profiles - if a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposal is enacted.
An update to application forms would ask users to identify what social networks they use and their "social media identifier" such as a username.
However, revealing this information would be "optional".The changes would affect Esta and Form I-94W applications.
The proposal was added to the Federal Register by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), part of the DHS, last Thursday.
Any data travellers choose to share will be used "for vetting purposes, as well as applicant contact information", the proposal states.
Bye, bye, dear social media, it was fun as long as it lasted.

So happy I'm not using
any social media. Does c99p count?

Probably... although they are likely focusing on the big ones
Screw that.
This idea that people have a right to know your every thought is such BS. I remember companies wanting your social media logins - never happen.
My old job insisted we use facebook and twitter FOR work stuff, so I created a fake account only for work. My company has no right to intrude upon my non-working life.
Agreed! eom

Probably
and the stuff you post RA will probably get you a free one-way ticket to gitmo under the Artillary administration

Well, then, please be mindful
of visiting hours because I'm going to need lots of visitors!!!

Me neither
Never have used it and can't miss it.
Seems like a huge over reach by the Obama administration into the NoneOfYourBusiness zone.
"The justness of individual land right is not justifiable to those to whom the land by right of first claim collectively belonged"
I walked out of two job interviews
for asshole employers who asked for my login to facebook and twitter. I said, "I'm sorry, that's none of your business, and I believe this interview is over". It'll be a cold day in hell before I give that info to my government. Why the fuck they even ask, when they can spy on all of it, is bullshit, writ large.
That was hard, because I needed a job. But they were jobs I already decided I wasn't going to take. If it was one I continued to be interested in once I met with the employer, and if I got asked, I was prepared to negotiate the point, to see how bad they wanted it (it never came to that, fortunately).
This to me is absolutely insane, luna
I could understand them asking for someone's twitter or facebook username - don't agree with it - but at least I can understand the rationale of wanting to check out your potential employee.
But the login? The hell? Why don't you ask me for my bank account and credit card logins, too?
The very idea is laughable. I'd have walked out too.
Or said sure, as long as you all give me your logins.
I was stunned
the first time it happened--I repeated it back to the guy, to make sure I didn't mis-understand. You don't want to just look up my name, you want to actually log in to my account?
Uh, how about NO?? When it happened again, I almost went off completely on that guy, but I decided that would be pointless, and just stood up, announced I was done here, and bolted.
The sound of two hands clapping
Good for you!!
"The justness of individual land right is not justifiable to those to whom the land by right of first claim collectively belonged"
Unbelieveable!
It stuns me - really!!! Hooray for you walking out, luna. That's just insanity to think people will comply and is even more insane when people DO comply!

This has not happened to me…yet. BUT...
I am now wondering if I do get asked this question how they will respond when I tell them I've never had a Facebook or Twitter account, or Instagram, etc..
Second guessing the hiring game is already bad enough.
Now I wonder, in this moment, if they're going to think it's a lie. And even if I set up accounts. I won't do anything with them. And yet again - would they think that I was providing a throwaway account to shut them up.
LOL Nothing I can do about it. Nothing I can change. If it happens it happens, but wow. The entitlement and invasiveness alone…
I'm just going to have to stick with no social media BS in my life and if and when this does occur, I'll have to decide whether to play it slow or hit back harder immediately.
Pre internet, that would be like asking you to bring in a family album and 'some recent examples of' personal correspondence. Needless to say, that didn't happen back in the day, but just…not sure which is appropriate…WOW! or DAMN! Probably both.
"How will they respond ..."?
They won't believe you!
There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.
Nah
A lot of people still won't go there. At all. It's not as unusual as you think to not be on Facebook or Twitter.
And as far as 'throwaway accounts'--that might work, too--if you give up a page source at all, people will take that much at face value. They're only looking for reasons to disqualify you--set up a dummy account with lots of dogs and cats on it or something equally innocuous. Problem solved
Unless the account is work-related (and specific,
to the job being applied for) an employer or potential employer has no business asking for a user name, much less a login. Employers checking credit ratings already goes too far.

Oh, you know I agree with that
the business about "denying someone employment" because of bad credit really made me livid--this situation was not far behind it.
I couldn't believe the nerve. One instance I could understand (the guy was a real Type A arrogant type); but that second one really threw me, I was like "WTH kind of trend is this???" Turns out that in Florida, Voldemort had been talking up the importance of allowing employers to "vet potential employees" using such means, so it had been in the paper around that time, and I'm guessing these two interviewers had read about it. That whole thing went away just as fast as it appeared (I had several interviews in the next 6 months after that, but it never came up again). But I'm pretty damn sure those guys got the message, I wasn't as polite as I could have been, but I didn't feel bad about that...
I have never seen a good reason to be polite
to those who step on the boundaries of my rights. However, if it does come to pass where it would be necessary to give some information, I can see a proliferation of fake accounts with fake email addresses with fake IPs that contain a ton of cute puppies and kittens. = )
The whole use of credit card information for rentals, car insurance, probably health insurance, employment, etc. is something that We the People are going to have to take on at some point.

i have read about this in the past as....
...a new tactic in job interviews. i wonder if they would even believe me if i told them i have no social media accounts. f'em!
Same here.
Do they decide you're lying and invalidate you as a candidate? Doesn't sound very fair, let alone reasonable - but maybe that's their intent too.
mimi
you best be yourself...no one else can manage to do so.
My thought is how would they know if you don't tell them?

The absurd regulation is a joke isn't it?

It's optional now, but eventually it will be required, along
with the usual severe federal penalties for refusing to comply or providing false information. Franklin was right.

people will stop using that shit first.
Or sue over it and win.
I hope you're right, but we've already lost so many rights to
privacy in the name of security, I am not optimistic. OTOH, they already know what we're doing anyway, so why bother to ask?

well yeah, may be, I guess one has to read the fine
print once it is written. I think it's just amazing that this is even tried, no matter how much they make it sound voluntary or optional information. If it were completely optional why write such regulations at all to begin with.
What makes me even more furious that most of the social media sites including blogs make it impossible for you to delete your traces, comments and accounts.

Plastic Wrapped
They already have this in place when trying to enter into Israel. Any sign of pro-Palestine activism and your locked up until the next flight. The International Solidarity Movement has some information to help if you are trying to get to the West Bank which might be useful in the event that someone wants to actually enter into the USA.
I use Facebook for family and real friends who I know as well as posting news to groups like Revolutionaries for Bernie, Climate Events and so on... C99 could be considered social media. TPW is social media. The NSA sucks it all up anyway so there is no escape. Best is for everyone to flood social media with discontent and non-violent revolutionary sentiment.
Myself, I plan to never enter into the USA until institutionalized racism ends completely and unequivocally. I doubt they would let me in anyway, but frankly I don't give a plastic wrapped turd ball.

I became a faculty member at Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska) in the fall of 1979. I did not complete all of the "paperwork" required at that time. I officially terminated my employment at UNK as of the fall of 2014, without filing most of the required "paperwork" at that time. You could say that, on paper, I was never officially employed by the state of Nebraska.
My husband had to sign one of those Non-compete forms

2 accounts
you could have an account with you internet alias and an account with your real name that you do little with. If it comes up, give them the one with your real name.
Been waiting for this with employers.
It's one part of why I never 'came out' and posted under my actual name.
