Odds and Ends

Here comes the kitchen sink. = )

First up, there are many, many places--including the Univision Florida debate--that have used less than ethical excerpts from Sanders's 1985 video, and it is important that people see what Sanders really said in context.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1xrAv9cMqI]

I have not been able to find the words "Revolution of values" in this video or the transcript that HRC used against Sanders in that debate. She did reference the video in her remarks, so it would appear that prior to the debate she had knowledge that this specific issue was coming up. This is her quote from the debate:

“I think in that same interview he praised what he called the revolution of values in Cuba and talked about how people were working for the common good, not for themselves.

I just couldn't disagree more,” Clinton said. “You know, if the values are that you oppress people, you disappear people, imprison people or even kill people for expressing their opinions, for expressing freedom of speech, that is not the kind of revolution of values that I ever want to see anywhere.”

[Emphasis added]

What we have here, people, is a clear case of red-baiting. The fact that she had this nonsense ready calls into question whether she knew in advance this question would be asked of Sanders.

It should be noted how she stands the phrase on its head and makes it totally something else. Look at her first sentence in which "people were working for the common good." Then look at her second sentence. She is talking about the government, and she also disagrees with people working together to improve their lives. People and government, to me at least, are two different things and her disagreement gives a hint of what she thinks about grassroots movements.

The fact is nowhere in this video or anywhere else in all of Sanders' speeches or videos can I find this exact phrase. However, there is someone who did use it:

“True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth.”

--MLK, found here: This is What Democracy Looks Like
Note: You might want to check out this site as I found a number of interesting things there. Their mission is "to make religion reasonable, violence unthinkable and peace a possibility."

So, HRC made up something that did not exist in that video or in any other form from Sanders, and the media in many articles actually put the phrase "Revolution of Values" in Sander's mouth. This is an excellent example of the media not doing its job. Maybe in HRC's own mind she was equating Sanders with MLK? But there is no excuse for the media treatment of this. They have seen the video. They know what the truth is but chose to disregard it.

Second up and related, there are bits and pieces of following tape also being used out of context in some media reports. It was another interview regarding his trip to Nicaragua. I saw some excerpts on Fox earlier today.

Sanders Press Conference on Nicaraguan Issues

The video says it is 60 minutes in length. The interview actually takes about 40 minutes, and the remainder is about demonstrations in Vermont regarding the use of nuclear bombs in Japan during WWII. There are some very thoughtful responses in that segment that are worth watching. As there also some Republicans also questioned, the remarks make an interesting contrast.

Third, while it comes from The Daily Beast, facts are still facts, and if you cannot find them elsewhere, you use them where you find them. On Meet the Press, HRC commented about being the only candidate who had Wall St. running ads against her. This article rated that statement Pants on Fire.

Speaking of fact checkers, another claim by HRC goes down in flames: Spot check of Hillary Clinton's Senate record fails to support bipartisanship claim

Along this line, ProPublica has supplied the infamous "Cut it out" speech. Keep in mind that she was running for president as the time this was given. There seems to be a disconnect between her claims during debates etc. and the tone she has in this speech which by the way as at Nasdaq, not Wall St.

Fourth, here is a good interview with Sanders with Ebro in the Morning in NYC. There are some good questions without the usual condescension of major media pundits.

Agenda Project. There is a lot more information at this link, but this says a bit who they are:

Since our founding 6 years ago, we have relentlessly hammered the Right, fiercely exposing their plans for America. When Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and Glenn Beck went after Muslims, we frontally assaulted their bigotry and hate. When Paul Ryan tried to rip the social safety net out from underneath seniors, we tore him to shreds. When Republican budget cuts actually ended up killing people, we had the guts to say so. When the Chamber of Commerce pretended it was just another business group, we exposed it as the biggest lobbyist in the country. When conservatives tried to make tax cuts for billionaires palatable, we found hundreds of wealthy patriots to challenge them.

Thank you. = )

and worth one of my about five WaPo uses left for this month. It was written about a month before Sanders announced and its focus is more HRC-like in many ways and some of the people involved are more up her alley. There must be a complete separation between Democracy Alliance and the Agenda Project. Maybe not, but it looks likely.

Looks like she has been active in the progressive movement for quite some time. A better "communications infrastructure of the progressive movement" would sure come in handy and though that seems to be part of her focus, I don't see it in existence yet.

That is exactly what I was interested in. I didn't see anything about personnel on the website (could have been that I just missed it) and that always sends up a bit of a red flag.

I am not sure if Jorge Ramos was earnestly trying to be tough on Clinton to prove his nonbias, but the email question has already proven unpopular with Democrats, so ultimately it was a way to look like Univision was being tough on Clinton but in reality was a boost for Clinton. People were even booing in the audience as the question was being asked.

Meanwhile the red-baiting question was the perfect way to criticize Bernie and pander to Cuban-Americans at the same time. Then of course you have the fact that she went way over time on all her responses (while getting a false dig in on Bernie every time). Reddit has a thread that documented the minutes and interruptions pretty well.

https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/49rvi4/march_9th_2016_dnc_pri...

And yeah, the fact that she had a response prepared for that video seemed a bit surprising, but then I wouldn't doubt that she and Brock look for any way possible to pander and criticize their opponent to appeal to their target audience. There was also another shot of her meeting with advisers during a break in the debate, something they are not supposed to do.

didn't even phase the media. It is truly amazing how well Sanders is doing with HRC and her surrogates, the Democratic establishment and almost the entire media totaling going out of their way to stop him. They have tried so many avenues without much success (other than the election fraud stuff) that one would think that they might consider just what that means.

You are right about the particular debate being absolutely the worse. Watching the two women moderators sit there and bob their heads at HRC every time she spoke actually had me wanting to throw something, and I that is not anywhere near a usual action for me.

I had seen that video prior to the debate and just about blew up when they stopped it where they did. When the moderator said that he did not answer the question after he had succinctly described the point he had made in the video, I just gave up at understanding how people could be so willfully stupid.

Looking for a way to get a jump on Sanders is one thing. Having someone hand it to them is another.

When 90% of all news outlets are owned by 6 giant corporations, then it becomes obvious that they (meaning the 6) have a vested interest of steering and controlling the content for the benefit of themselves and their fellow giant corporations.
Then (now) seeing through the intentional haze of this Neomedia, or attempting to, becomes a matter of "if a tree falls in the forest..."

The possibility exists, given the structure of the "press", that Bernie's arrival at the convention would come as a complete shock to the punditry.

(it wouldn't embed) has a good take on what Sanders thinks of the media. = ) After this election, I think it would be a good idea prior to the midterm elections to bring about a change in the media. I point out their errors, fallacies and omissions every chance I get, but it is going to take a large group of people to effect any change. One of the first peitions to Sanders as president will be to break up media monopolies. = )

I think there should be paramedics at the ready in newsrooms across the country on June 7.

the ability to fight back against misrepresentations of the facts. I collect this stuff all the time. I got a couple off my list now, and by tomorrow, I will add 10 more. LOL

If everyone took the time to watch the second video (only a link as it couldn't be embedded), I think they would no longer question Sanders' foreign policies.

Thank you!

Actually, it's an excellent example of the media doing its job, seeing as they are being paid by their billionaire owners to elect a president beholden to their interests...

You are correct that is the media doing the job they are paid and told to do. What in actuality I meant was that is journalists not doing their jobs which is to inform the public by supplying facts without bias.
