How could you get so close to the animals? What camera do you use? Everything is so clear. How do you get such fine detail without blurring moving animals? Those are more different types of birds than I have seen in my entire life. Do you use a special camera for when it's raining or snowing? Are the shots digitally enhanced?
You must reveal to me all your secrets so that if I ever have money I can do likewise!
Oh, and Happy New Year! I'm glad you were bored. Thank you for sharing!

It's a considerable investment in cost, size and weight. ($800 camera, $900 lens, $200 tripod and gimbal) 8 lbs when I'm using the tripod. In the field I'll usually shoot from a monopod to reduce the weight to 6 lbs. But that requires an increase in shutter speed and higher ISO...Bird in flight shots require a high shutter speed in any case. (Which is why the pros spend big money on long fast lenses)
To get the fine detail you have to get close and have low ISO. My best bird photos are shot on or near feeders. For the birds that don't come to feeders I have to find places where they will be close. I have several places where I can get close to warblers and other migrants in the spring. My biggest problem is finding the time to get out and shoot. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is another go to spot, most of my shots there are done right from my car.
I shoot everything in RAW format (Adobe DNG in this case) and post-process them. It's much more time consuming than letting the camera make a JPEG, but I like having control. Nothing fancy, just adjusting a few sliders and setting the white balance in Adobe Lightroom. (Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Clarity) Luminance Noise Reduction and Sharpening. If the lens I'm using has Lens Profile I'll use those corrections.
Besides the Sigma 150-500 I also use several Macro lenses, several Pentax lenses (DA 18-135, FA 50/1.7) & Sigma 10-20. The camera itself is a Pentax K-3.

at sunset. I tried to get some photos with a regular old camera. Bwah-ha-ha. Good luck with that. When I saw them flying toward me, they'd be long gone across the park by the time I pressed the shutter, even though I was trying to anticipate. A few unidentifiable blurs in the far shots. Some nice sunset colors. I'd love to capture them on film some day, though.

A bunch of GREAT photos. That male Lawrence's Warbler is awesome! I love a rare recessive expression! Junco in the snow is very nice, the Scarlet Tanager male nails it, the male Ruddy Duck "calling", the male Chestnut-sided Warbler, the Pileated Woodpecker... all great stuff. I presume the Falcated Duck was in captivity? Thanks for sharing.
Happy New Year all!

Are all zoo ducks. The Mallards at the zoo are free to come and go, but why would they go anywhere when the get fed every day
They have a number of Eurasian ducks at the zoo. Mandarin, Shelduck & Ruddy Shelduck, Smew, Baikal Teal etc. as well as African, Australian and South American...
The Lawrence's has been at Great Bear Recreation Area for the last three years. Hopefully a fourth year this year. There are Brewster's there too, but I only have photos of a Blue-winged with yellow wing bars...Great Bear is one of my favorite spots. A good diversity of migrating warblers that are easy to get close to plus resident Blue-winged, Yellow, and Common Yellowthroats.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
I'm pretty sure the Trillium is a Painted Trillium. Normally the flowers are white, but this was at the end of the bloom...soil acidity might have something to do with it too.

I got lost in the technical details of the camera and lens and stuff, but I truly enjoy your sharing these gorgeous photographs with us. The detail in them is incredible! Thank you.

Wonderful work, thank you.
Your autumn leaves photo #1797, looks like a bird (a cardinal, in autumn colours).
